IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-FIXTURES FOR LAMPS AND CHANDELIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,846, dated July 20, 1875; application filed January 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE R. LYON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Extension-Fixture for Lamps and Chandeliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object 1 have in view is to make a fixture for chandeliers and pendent lamps, capable of being extended to any desired distance, which will be durable, simple, and convenient in use; and my invention therein consists in the means of raising and lowering the fixture,

as more fully hereinafter set forth.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my device, I will now proceed to describe the same in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device Fig. 2, a separate view of the fixture and rod, and Fig. 3 a separate view of the sleeve.

Like letters of reference denote similar parts in each figure.

A represents a lamp or chandelier frame of anyordinary construction, to which is attached a rod, B, the upper end a of which is bent at right angles to the rod, and forms a short hook. 0 represents a sleeve, in which is inserted the rod B, made in the form of a halftube, and having a head, I), by which the fixture is suspended. The sleeve 0 has a series of slots, 0, extending its entire length, to receivethe hook to on the rod B. The sleeve 0 is further provided at its lower end with a collar, (1, which encircles the end of said sleeve and serves to keep the rod in the sleeve by the hook on its end coming in contact with said collar. D represents a spiral spring coiling around the sleeve, and fastened by one end to the head I), and by the other to the top of the frame A, where the rod B is secured thereto.

The operation of my device is as follows: The fixture being suspended from the ceiling, or from a bracket on the side wall by the head I), the hook at engages in one of the slots 0, and holds the fixture firmly in that position. When it is desired to lower the fixture, grasp its lower part, and tilt it so as to disengage the hook from the slot. It can then be lowered to the next slot, or the whole length of the sleeve, until the hook strikes the collar d, when it will engage with the last slot in the sleeve. It can be raised in the same way.

The model and drawing show my device attached to a lamp-frame, but it is equally applicable to chandeliers.

The advantages of my device are apparent. The lamp, when in use, can be lowered was to cast its rays at any height, and when not in use can be raised so as to be entirely out of the way.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to cover by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a lamp or chandelier" frame, of the rod B, having the hook a, and sleeve 0, having slots 0, the whole being incascd in the spiral spring D, as and for the purpose set forth.
