Application fil ed November 13,1926 Serial Ne'. 148,193.
My invention relates to the valve mecha- IllSIILOf gas combustion engines for automobiles'and other motor'driven vehicles; It
has for its objects, 'first,;toprovide within each head of a gas engine, a revolving valve wherein are ports-for gasaintake and exhaust outlets, these ports being" so timed. and adjusted as to operatethrough corres onding fixed ports in 'the wallsoffithe'cy inder heads; second, to provide positive and-noiseless valves forgas engines without the use through the crankcase of the engine.
of spring actuated mechanism; third, to provide adjustable means whereby said sleeve valves canpbe-made gastight, and fourth,
to provide a geared mechanism between the crank shaft of the gas engine and -saidrevolving valve whereby the same will'be operated with positive regularity;
.I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated'in the accompanying drawing in which I 1 Fig. 1 is horizontal top view of a pair of engine, cylinder heads on the line 1+-1with the inclosing cap ofthe cylinders removed. Figure 2' is a vertical cross section of one of the engine cylinders continued down Similar characters refer to similar parts of each figure. v 1
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 represents a top view of the usual'form of a gas engine with two or more cylinders, only two cylinders '1 and 2 being indicated, and at one side of which an exterior view 3, is shown of the gas supply and exhaust channels indicated therein by broken lines. Fig.
' 1 is taken on the line 1--1 of Fig. 2 and shows the gear wheel mechanism by which the revolving valve is operated for a four cycle engine.
The construction and operation of my invention is more clearly set forth in Fig. 2, which is a vertical cross section through line 22. The construction and operation is the same in each of the two cylinders and likea wise in engines where two or more pairs of cylinders are combinedand operated on one crank shaft. 7 I
My improvement comprises a new form of cylinder head 4 made onthe top of the cylinder body -5. The cylinder head and body are each made with inner and outer walls, leaving an open space 6 between for the circulation of a water cooling system common to gas engines. The cylinder head 4 is tapered upwardly like the frustum of a c one and designed to have a revolvin valve W1tha corresponding frustum; shape interior fitted and operated thereon,
revolving valve has a vertical cylindrical exterior'andis' surroundedby a neatly fitted outercasing"8 which forms an outer wall enclosing the revolving valve and frustum shaped cylinderhea'd. The outer casing securely-attachedto thecylinder body 5 as indicated at 9.
as in-, d cated at 77. The outer surface of this 'Ag'as intake port 10 is made through the side of the frustuinshaped In ,alinement therewith, port 11 is made through*-the outer casing 8 and connected with; the gas 1 supply channel 3. On'the opposite side'of the cylinder is made an exhaust port not seen in the drawingbutindicated under character 12in Fig. 1", that is for it. i
In the side of thecylindrical revolvingcylinder head 4.
connected with the exhaustchannel designed with the port .12 at proper time for exhaust.
The cylindrical valve 7 isrevolved by an annular gear l4v extended from its top end. It is made gastight on its vertical exterior by a packing ring 15, contacting the outer casing 8. The frustum shaped interior is held in neat fitting adjustment with the frustum shaped cylinder head 4 by means of an annular plate 16 on the annular gear extension 14 of the revolving valve 7. The cylinder head casing 8 is inclosed with a cap or cover 17 fixed thereon. In this cap' 17 areset screws 18 designed to bear on the annular plate 16. These screws 18 are to be so set that the revolving valve will be held in neatrfitting adjustment with its frustum shaped cylinder head, then each is fixed with lock nuts19 screwed tight on the head cap 17. Should the revolving valve become loose or, worn from use, it can be readjusted by resetting the set screws 18. The annular plate is held from revolving with the valve by raised lugs on each side of the set screws as will be seen in the drawing.
The revolving valves with their attached annular gears are made to revolve in unison with the crank shaft in a novel manner. In one of the crank cases a gear 20 is mounted on the crank shaft 21. This gear 20 engages .23 is mounted a miter gear to "engage and 14: on the two cylinders adjacent to it and their respectiverevolving valves. The gear 261s so proportioned with the gea-rs [1 4 as to make .two revolutlons to thelr one a-Svrequired for afoul: cyclegas engine.
It Will he seen that my invention is lesigned tojhe constructed onmechanical lines that are practical, simple and-economical. The revolving valve can be adjusted, :timed and fitted to operate with perfect inicety.
The parts are easy to make end assemble. All is securely housed to keep ,free from dust and injury. The valves operation will be POSltiVQ;ll1(l noiseless witha niinimuinof .wear and'cost of upkeep. The spark :plug is to he fixed into the threaded opening;27 a d the zmani'foild is to be attached .on the cylinder head in theausual. imannerwvith a holtkatl28. 1
'The revolving valves with their operating mechanism are efieetivelyluhricated by a circulating oil pipe 29 above theeyliir deriheads :ithanioutletionto the top ofzeach as shown in Fig. 2,. This will keep the annular bearing plate, the:top ofzthe revolving .valvesiand :the operating gears =bathed :in oil and each will ;be effectively lubricated; A small groove:30, in the sideof ithe incasedesigned to set forth the constructive and operative features With the novel combinations involved therein. The size and pro- ,portionofany .part may be varied to secure the moStperlect and etfective operation.
Having 1 described my invention, I claim- In a four cycle ,gas enginevvith duplex cylinders ,as described, ithe comhination of a frustum shaped head .on the explosive end of GEIGhOflT said cylinders, an attached outer casing enclosing (each tot said heads, said heads andflouter casings having ports in alinementand connection .With the channels oat' gas supply and lexhanst, acylindrical re- .volving valve so formed and operated as to revolve in ,neat fitting adjustment .between the said lhe-ads vand louter casings and in timed relation with said ports, an annular bearing :plate on the top edge of each of said revolving valves, an ,incircling cap fixed on-the top of said-enter easing with leeks-nut set screws itherein to bear on said annular bearing plate between :the lugs thereon :to :hold said revolving valve :in neat fitting adjustme a described, nd said encircling head cap forming :an oil bath chamber above ;,-said valve and operating mechanismiand a circulating pipe oil system to ;-supply All]. into said oil bath. chamber for effective lubrication.
