Description

Feb. 7, 1928.
L.- P. FERRON BOAT ' Filed May 15, 1926 Inventor .Z. J. .7 av-ram Attorney Patented Feb. 7, 1928.
UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFAYETTE P. FERRON, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Application filed May 15,
My present invention pertains to boats, and contemplates the provision of a boat possessed of the several practical advanhereinafter ascribed to it.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description an-u claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forn'iing part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the boat constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the boat.
Figure is a front end elevation of the boat, and
Figure 2 is a rear end elevation or stern view oi the boat.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other characteristics of my novel boat is a downwardly convexed keel 1, see full and dotted lines in Figure 1, the said keel permitting of the employment of a horizontal propeller shaft 2 which extends rearwardly from the hull at the point 3, Figure 2. The propeller shaft 2 disposed as indicated will enable the propeller to push the boat forwardly horizontally, it being understood that the propeller will be located under the stern portion of the boat.
The chimes with the keel 1, are clownwardly convened ii'rom stem to stern, but it will be readily understood that at the point 5 a transverse vertical plane will intersect the heel and chimes at points which lie in a horizontal line.
The forward portions oil" the bottom of the boat are concave between the keel 1 and the chimes 4, Figure 3, and the said concavities are desi nated by 7. At this point i would also have it understood that the bottom is full width from the stern to a point forwardly of amidships, and that the concavities 7 are gradually merged into a single transverse concavity 8 at the stern board 7*. it will also be noted that the keel 1 is flush with the planking.
The bottom characterized as described is calculated to confer upon the boat the qualities of great stability and carrying capacity. it will also be appreciated that the forward portion of the boat bottom brings about the 1926. Serial N0. 109,341.
drawing of water under the hull instead of the throwing of the water outwardly, and hence the boat will be kept up and will be caused to ride on an even keel.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by virtue of the characteristics alluded to, my novel boat is stable and dry at all speeds, and that the resistance to the hull when under power is minimized with the result that a great speed may be attained with the expenditure of proportionately small power, and that in the operation of the boat spray is practically eliminated as is also vibratory strain, the latter being due to the fact that bucking of the water amidships or forwardly is averted.
It will also be appreciated from the foregoing that the lines of my novel boat above the water line are pleasing as are also the deck lines.
I would further have it understood that notwithstanding the stability of my novel boat characterized as described, the boat has little draft which is obviously advantageous.
Ihave explicitly described the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to im part an exact understanding of the said embodiment in all of its details. I do not desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the precise structure disclosed, my invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which modifica tions may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat out, is
In a boat, the bottom of which includes a longitudinal, downwardly convened keel, longitudinal, downwardly convexed chimes, said keel and chimes so relatively arranged at an intermediate point in the length of the boat that a transverse vertical plane will intersect the keel and chimes at points which lie in a horizontal line, forward transverse concave portions between the keel and the chimes, and a rear portion into which said forward transverse concave portions are gradually merged; the said keel and chimes being downwardly convexed throughout the length of the boat, and the rear portion of the bottom of the boat being transversely concave throughout the width of the boat.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LAFAYETTE P. FERRON.
