The threads 10 on the inner portion 8 of the clip rod 6 are one-half the pitch of the threads 11 on the exterior ot the portion 7 of the clip rod. It will `be noted that in this position of vent the stop or nut 19 transmitting any pressure to the inner clip 4, thereby permitting the entire strain of the locking springr 28=to"=beitransmitted through the-outer and innerwprinting plates 2and 32 to the center fixed-clip 33.

In unlocking the eccentric lock-up and with. more vparticular reference to Fig. 5, it will be seen that whenthe spring 28 is released-it will have va tendency to force the end plate 30 and the lock-up plate 29, on `which it-is mounted, so -ar to the left in Fig. 5, that the surface on the lock-up plate 29 would engage with the surface 46 on the shoulder 24, were it not prevented from doing so. To prevent these two surfaces 45a1id 46 from contacting with each other, we mount the collar 26 on the clip rod 6, which collar passes freely in the opening 47v in the end plate 30. The coil spring 28 is suiliciently large that itv not only engages with the interior surface 48 of the end plate 30', but also with the inner surface of the collar 26, when the parts are unlocked as shown in Fig. 5. This collar 26, is adjusted by the set screw 27 to a position ou the cli'p rod 6 so that it will engage the spring 28 before. the spring can bring the surface 45 on the lock-up plate 29 into contact with the surface 46 on the shoulder 24. leaving a space or clearance 50 as shown in Fig. 5.
This is particularly desirable, for if these two surfaces 45 and 46 contacted with each other under the action of the spring 28, so 1 much friction would he developed at this point that it would be difficult for a hand tool to operate the clip rod 6.

It is to be understood that these terms are' meant to, and do cover different lengths of stereotype plates regardless of the Width of sheet, or

By arranging the printed matter and blank margin on the .stereotype castings` it would be possible to print on different widths of sheets without 'varying the length ot the plates. Again stereotype plates are not always cast with the columns transverse to the axis otthe printing cylinder'. They are often cast with the columns running parallel with the axis of the cylinder. In such cases the width of the printed matter would become the length of the columns', and a shorter or longer'column might necessitate a shorter or longer p'latc.V All V'these uses are, and are meant to be, `included iii lthe claims.

A new article of manufacture for printing presses comprising a` clip rod formed in a plurality of parts, one part being provided with exterior and interior screwthreads, and the other part being provided with exterior screw-threads to cooperate with the interior threads of the first part and stops on the respective parts to cooperate with outer and inner clips.

The combination of a quick lock-up for plate cylinders, including a clip rod provided with exterior screw-threads, an outer clip provided with interior screw-threads to loo cooperate With the screw-threads on the clip rod, an inner clip, means to actuate the inner clip from the clip rod when no outer printing plate is used, said means being inoperative when an outer printing plate is employed, 'and stops to properly position the inner and outer clips for different number of columns or Width of sheet to be printed.
20. The combination'of a quick lock-up for plate cylinders, including a clip rod provided with exterior screw-threads, an outer clip provided with interior screw-threads to cooperate with the screw-threads on the clip rod, an inner clip, means to actuate the inner clip from the clip rod when no outer printing plate is used, said means being inoperative when an outer printing plate is elnployed, stops to properly position the inner and outer clips for different number of columns or Width of sheet to be printed and a lock-up plate.
