GOLUMN POST BEARING FOR BRAKE l-IANGERS.
Application filed. February This invention relates to column post bearings tor brake hangers, and has for its object to provide an additional bearing for the oscillating link supports of the brake beams customarily employed on railway cars and the like. With the actual type of con struction employed on rail ay cars the supporting bearingsformed on a part of the column post of railway trucks and the pins carried by said bearings, rapidly wear and eventually would lead to the dropping of the brake beams and probably result in the derailment of the car. The prime object of this invention, therefore, is to produce an auxiliary hearing which may be readily at tached to railway trucks having brake beam supports of the type described, without necessitating replacement of any of the standard parts of the trucks, the auxiliary bearing not only prolonging the life of the standard bearings if employed before the latter are unduly worn, but greatly increasing their strength. When the standard hearing brackets are so worn asto endanger support of the beams, as outlined, it has heretofore been. necessary to replace the entire post carrying the bearing brackets. The necessity of replacing such Worn post is avoided by the use of my auxiliary bearings, as they 'arecapable of carrying the beams and furthermore transfer the wear on the pins to an intermediate point which was not originally subjected to wear.
.With the object named in view, the invention consists in certain novel and useful features of construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a section taken longitudinally through one side of a truck on the line II of Figure 2, to illustrate the post column support and one end of a brake beam pivotally suspended therefrom.
Figure 2 is a section on the line IIII of Figure 1. i l
Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken through the auxiliary bearing forming a part of the invention, as it will appear in operative position on the post column and with the pivot pin in position.
Figure 4; is a perspective view of the auxiliary bearing of the invention.
In the said drawing, where like reference 7, 1927. Serial No. 166,4i93.
characters identify corresponding parts in all of the figures, 1 illustrates a post column interpositioned between upper and lower arch members 2 of a truck, and said post at its upper end is formed with a laterally extending arm, comprising flange portions 3 connected together by a reinforcing and stiffening web 4 at one of their edges, said web being formed with a central opening 4-. to lighten without impairing the strength of the structure.
integrally formed with the flanges 3 and 4, is a pair of similar spaced ears 5, formed with. hublilre extensions 5 said ears and extensions being former with alined openings for the reception of the supporting Encircling the opposite ends pivot pin 6. of the pin 6, are the opposite arms of a U- shaped supporting link 7 which pivotally carries the brake beam assembly 8 at its tent action one upon the other, effect the elongation of the bearing openings and if neglected long enough, as occasionally hap pens, lead to the breaking thereof as pointed out in the introductory paragraph of this specification.
In order to provide an auxiliary bearing to increase the area of the bearing surfaces or to serve as a substitute for the original points of pin support, I have produced an auxiliary bearing comprising a downwardly-opening hook-shaped upper portion 9 which overlies the upper flange 3 of the supporting arm of the post 1 and engages the rear side of said arm, as illustrated in Figure 3. The auxiliary bearing is of width to snugly fit between the extensions 5 as shown in Figure 1, and is formed with a tail or abutment 10 having a flat extremity which rests against the web l of the supporting post arm. The bearing has an open ing 11 in alinement with the openings of ears 5, or with the upper ends of such ear openings in the event they have become clon gated downwardly through wear, as hereinbefore suggested, it being noted that the bearing suspended from the top of the post arm, retains the pivot pin 6 at its initial and proper height and that the Wear on the pin is defined by the Width of the hearing, he ears Whether deformed by wear or not, guarding against dislocation of the auxiliary bearing under shock or jar incident to the travel of the car.
ll ith the construction described it will be apparent that the novice oi? the invention practically doubles or renews the hearing surface enpplied the pin 6, without nndnly increasing; the Weight of the brake niecl'ianiern, and that it may be ensily and quickly placed in position to relieve badly Worn post ern'is by the mere pulling of the pin (l, the ineertion of Hi auxiliary hearing and the replacement of the pin. It is to be understood of course tin t the anxiliaryb'earing'hi'aclrets may very in proportion to suit the dimensions of the column post arm and the common type of ears forming the conventional bearing.
'FIOHI the above description, it Will be apparent that I have produced a device embodying'the features oi ndrantage forth desirable in the statement of the object of. the invention, and which may be inedifled in various particulars Without departing. from the spirit and scope oi the appended claims;
What I claim is:
'1. The combination with a supporting arin having a pair of spaced ears provided With elined openings, a bearing pin engaging said openings, a. brake hanger carried with a supporting said pin en anriliary near interposed hetwren raid earn and renew on pro and having); a hook terminal on; 'ing' the enpp rting ziiza aliore the plane o, :aid p11 and a tail member engaging; a .ili'hil portion of said tiilli below th plane oi Raid Pin I l. .43.. downwardly trans ersely o l 'l L above and liming and a tail in Wino a ani'oi-mwninrr open rl Hill} n d-- WY '1 -E u inane oeion new pening a-in llll ltl mini;
