A further feature of the invention is the a provision of yielding means between the driving and driven elements whereby the rotating element will be gradually stopped and the movement thereof reversed, while the driven element will be instantly reversed.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of means for automatically reversingthe rotation of parts of the device while the source of power continues to rotate in the same direction.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of means for frictionally engaging the article holding cage with the driving element therefor. 7
And a further feature of the invention is in so constructing the automatically operated reversing mechanism that the article containing cage may rotate more than one revolution before the revolution thereof is reversed.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a frame or support upon which is mounted a receptacle 2, said receptacle being'arranged to contain water, and mounted 1 within said receptacle is a cage 8, thewalls of which are formed of segmental sections of cross bars 4, said bars, when in assembled relation, engagingwith bottom and top members 5 and 6, and these parts are all secured together, preferably by bolts 7.
The receptacle 2 is mounted upon the bed plate 8 of the frame 1, the top edge of the receptacle having a band ,9 fitting thereover, in the under face of which is a notch 10 for the reception of the upper edge of the receptacle 2. The lower edge of the receptacle is seated in a notch 11 in the bed plate 8, bolts 12 being employed for clamping the receptacle and band to the bed plate.
At the center of the bottom member 5 is provided a conical seat 13 with which frictionally engages a cone 1& at the upper end shaft 25. The cam'is elliptical so that when turned to one position the springs will be compressed, andwhen turned to another position, withrespect to the springs, will form a substantially stationary driving connectionbetween the shafts 15 and 25. The lower end of the shaft 25 enters a casing 26, and in said casing is a gear 27 employed for driving the shaft 25, and intermeshing with the gear 27 is a pair of pinions 28 and 29, which are in turn rotatably mounted upon vertically extending' shafts 30 and 31-, respectively. Slidably mounted upon the shafts 30 and 31 are clutch members 32 and 33, respectively,theupper ends of which are provided ivith clutch faces it and 35, re-
spectively, for engagement with the hubs ot' the pinions 28 and 29, the clutch memhers 32 and 33 being associated with a rocking beam which is pivotally connected at its longitudinal center, prefe ably to the wall of the casing 26. The rocking beam 36 is so connected with the clutch members that when one of the clutches is engaged with its respective pinion. the other clutch will be out of engagement with its respective pinion, and as the clutch members and the pinions are rotatably mounted on the shafts 30 and 31, one of the pinions will run idle while the other pinion is being driven, and as the pinions run in opposition to each other the change in drive from one pinion'to the other will serve to reverse the rotat on of the gear 27, and the cage 3 associated therewith. The shafts 30 and 31 have worm gears 37 and 38, rotatably mounted thereon. with which Jo-operates a worm 39 mounted upon a shaft 40, said latter shaft and worm being driven from any suitable source, and to permit vertical movement of the clutch members 32 and 33, and at the same time positively drive the same from the worm gears, a sleeve a l is attached to each of the worm gears, said sleeves having grooves s2 for engagement with keys 3 on the clutch members 32 and 33, consequently the clutch members may readily move upwardly or downwardly on their respective shafts, and at the same time be positively rotated with the worm gears.
The clutch members 32 and 33 are auton'iatically operated for engaging one or the other with the pinions 28 and 29 by providing a trip arm etl on the rocking beam. 36. the upper end of which enters a slot in a tripping plate 46, the plate being pivotally mounted on the shaft 25 so that it may be swung in the arc of a circle for engaging the ends of the slot 45 with the trip arm 44. In order to prevent the tripping plate 46 resting at a neutral point in its arc of movement, a plunger 47 is slidably mounted through a pivot 18 in one wall of the casing 26, the opposite end of the plunger having a ball 49 which co-operates with a socket 50 on one face of an extension 51 located on the plate 46, substantially at the longitudinal center of the slot 45, and by placing a compression spring 52 around the plunger 47 the tension of. said spring will serve to complete the tullstrolte of the tripping plate 16 in either direction. The tripping plate 46 is moved laterally in opposite directionsby placing on the extension 51 an upwardly projecting stud 53 which co-operates with an angular-shaped trigger 54 pivoted to the under face of the gear 27, the swinging movement of the trigger 54.- being regulated by a stop 55 also carried by the gear 27, and it will be readily seen that when one arm of the trigger is against the stop, as soon as the gear 27 has made a complete revolution, the arm of the trigger so resting against the stop will strike the stud 53 and impart lateral swinging n'iovement to the tripping plate it said movement being continued until the tripping plate has been moved past its center of gravity, whereupon the tension or" the spring 52 will complete the swinging movement of the plate and as the trip arm ll contacts with the end of the slot -l-3') the rocking beam 36 will be operated to release one of the clutch members and ei'igage the other clutch member, thereby reversing the rotation of the gear :27 and cage 3.
It is preferable to permit the gear 27. and the dish containing tray associated therewith, to malze two complete revolutions he tore the rotation thereof is reversed, and this is accomplished by employing the angular'shaped trigger for operating the re vcrsing mechanism. as it will be seen that after the rotation of the gear 52'? has been reversed the arm of the trigger previously employed for operating the tripping mechanism will. upon the next reverse rotation of the gear 2?. swing away from the stop and move the other arm of the trigger to such po nt that at the next revolution of the gear 27 the latter arm of the trigger will be moved against the stop, thereby caus ing the tripping plate to swing in the opposite direction.
In operation, after the dishes, or other articles to be washed, are placed within the cage 3, the water within the receptacle 2, having been heated from the heating tank 56 or other source, the motor .17 is energized which sets up operation of the gear 3%) through the shaft -10. The clutch members being set in the position shown in Figure 7 of the drawings, the gear 528 will l)(. rotated and the gear 27, together with the cage 3, rotated to the left. At the first complete revolution of the gear :27. the linger of the trigger 5i engaging the stop will be moved away from the stop and the other finger of the trigger Fri moved to such position that it will engage the stud 53 on the next revolution of: the gear 527. the continued rotation of the gear :27 moving the tripping plate 46 past its center of gravity, when the tension of the spring 5:! will complete the movement of the tripping plate to and engage'the clutch member 5 3 with the pinion 29. and as the pinion Q!) is rotating in a direction reverse to the pinion 28, the rotation of the gear 27 will be lllfl3- wise reversed.
To prevent the momentum of the revolving cage 3 being forcibly directed against the shafts and parts driving the same, the elliptical cam 24: is provided, which is controlled by the compression springs 20, the cage 5 having a partial additional rotation ill) fabritaas the agitation of the water through therev'ersrn of the rotating movement of over the gear 527, 'owing to'the fact that the springs 20 yield when the force of the cage is directedthereagamst. As soon, however, as the momentum of the cage isstopped the that it will thoroughly remove allparticles adhering tothe dishesdeposited in the cage, and this reversing motion isaccomplished without reversing or changing the direction of travel ofthe motor or the gears directly associated therewith.

'Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new anddesire-to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a yielding reversing gearing the combination of a driving shaft, a worm fixed thereon, parallel shafts at an angle to said driving shaft, sleeves loosely mounted on twoof said parallel shafts and having gears fixed thereon meshing with the worm on the driving shaft, longitudinally slidable clutch members rotatable with said sleeves, pinions carried on the opposite ends of two of said parallel shafts meshing with a gear fixed on another parallel'shaft, said gear and shaft being adapted to be rotated by said pinions alternately in opposite directions, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination a driving shaft having a worm. thereon, a plurality of parallel shafts arranged at an angle thereto, one of said parallel shafts being adapted to rotate a device alternately in opposite directions and having a gear fixed thereon, pinions loosely mounted on the adjacent ends of two other parallel shafts in mesh with said fixed gear, said other parallel shafts having sleeves fixed on their opposite ends provided with gears in mesh with .a worm on said driving shaft, clutch members on each of said last mentioned parallel shafts between said sleeves and pinions and rotatable with said sleeves and adapted to be alternately moved into and out of engagement with said pinions for operating said device, substantially as set forth.
3. a rocking beam for alternately moving said clutch members into and out of engagement with said pinions,a trip arm on said rocking beam, a tripping plate having a slot therein for engagement with said arm, means associated with said tripping plate for moving the same in the are of a circle in opposite directions, and a spring projected rod for completing the movement of the tripping plate when shifted from one position to another, substantially as set forth.
5. A reversing gearing comprising a driv ing shaft having a worm thereon, parallel opposite directions.
6. A reversing gearing comprising a driving shaft having a worm thereon, a plural-' ity of parallel shafts at an'angle thereto a gear on one or said parallel shafts, sleeves loosely mounted on a pair of said parallel shafts and having gearsfixed thereon meshing with the worm on the driving shaft,
longitudinally slidable'clutch members rotatable with said sleeves, pinions carried on the opposite ends of said pair of parallel shafts meshing with said gear fixed on one' of said parallel shafts and adapted to be en-- shafts at an angle to'said driving shaft, 7
gaged by said clutch members for rotating said pinions alternately in opposite directions, substantially as set forth.

Areversing gearing comprising a driving shaft, a plurality of parallel shafts at an angle thereto, one of said parallel shafts being adapted to rotate a device alternately in opposite directions and having a gear fixed thereon, pinions loosely mounted on the adjacent ends of two other parallel shafts in mesh with said fixed gear, said other parallel shafts having sleeves lixed on their opposite end provided with gears in mesh with a Worm on said driving shalt, clutch members on each of said last mentioned parallel shafts between said sleeves and pinions and rotatable with said sleeves, a rocking beam for alternately moving said clutch members into and out of engagement With said pinions, a trip arm on said rocking beam, a tripping plate having a slot therein for engagement with said trip arm, and means associated with said tripping plate for moving the same in the are of a circle in opposite directions, substantially as set forth.

A reversing gearing comprising a driving shaft, a plurality of parallel shafts at an angle thereto, one of said parallel shafts being adapted to rotate a device alternately in opposite directions and having a gear fixed thereon, pinions loosely mounted on the adjacent ends of two. other parallel shalts in mesh with said fixed gear, said other parallel shafts having sleeves fixed on their opposite ends provided with gears in mesh with a norm on said driving shaft, clutch n'iembcrs on each of said last men tioned parallel shafts between said sleeves and pinions and rotatable with said sleeves, a rocking beam "for alternately lnovii'lg said clutch members into and out ol' engagement with said pinions, a trip arm on said rocking beam, :1 tripping plate having a slot therein for engagement with said trip arm, means asociated with said tripping plate for moving the same in lhe are of a circle in opposite directions, and a spring projected rod for completing the movement of the tripping plate when shifted from one position to an other, substantially as set forth.
