Description

,P. H. WHEELER.
Watchmakers Boxes. N0. 165,774. Paltentedluly20,l875.
raaf v l jwwor N. PETERS, PHOYO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGION. D S4 NITED STATES PHILLIP H. WHEELER, OF ROOKFORD, ILLINOIS.
, IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH'NIAKERS BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [65,774, dated July 20, 1875; application filed October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP H. WHEELER, ot' Rockford, in the county of 'Winnebagd in the State of Illinois, have made certain Improvenients in I/Vatch-Makers or Jewelers Boxes, for holding the works ot' a watch, of which the following is a specification:
The object otl this invention is to produce a cheap and useful box to receive and securely hold the works or movements of a watch when set in its frame by the watch-.maker or by the repairer, have such movements secure from dust, air, or moisture, and at the same time be under the observation of the watch-maker or repairer, or for purposes of exhibiting the movements of a watch; and it consists in the construction of the box whereby the objects are attained, as will be fully hereinafter de scribed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents the top of the box 5 Fig. 2, a side view, partly in section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section; and Figs. 4 and 5, parts in detail.
A is the top or cover of the box, which is made ot glass or some other transparent sub stance, with a downwardly-projecting ilange, a, and the rabbet to upon the inner diameter of the cover or lid, as seen in Fig. 4. B is the bottom of the box, with the rabbet b upon the outside of the box, leaving the flange b projecting upwardly on the inner diameter of the box bottom, as seen in Fig. 5. b is a narrow groove in the outside of the upwardly-projecting inner ange b ot' C is a yielding water-tight the bottom B.
packing-ring, inserted in groove b of the upwardly-projecting flange b of the bottom B, projecting slightly beyond the outside face of the rabbet b', so that as the top or lid A is forced down it will compress the packing-ring within the groove, and allow the cover to close,
down upon the bottom of the shoulder of the rabbet in the bottom of the box, While the expansion of the packing-ring will make a water, air, and dust tight joint between the ilange of the cover and the upwardly-projecting flange b of the bottom of the box.
This box is made ot' glass or other transparent substance, with an interior cavityy to receive the watch. in order that the movementsmay be in view of the watch-maker at any time when necessary to observe them, or for the purpose of exhibiting the movements to others; andA while the movements are in such box they will be protected from dust, air, water, or any exterior substance that would alect the movements. Is easily constructed and durable, and will supply a want of the watch-maker that has long existed.l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A transparent or glass box for watch-makers, composed of parts A and B and packingring C in groove b", constructed substantially as and for the purposes described.
