Description

Jan. 24, 1928.
Patented J. 24,1928.
UNITED STATES PAUL 3383338, 0] EL IBASO, ILLINOIS.
WALL BOARD.
Application filed April 22, 1927. Serial No. 185,748.
This invention has 5 reference to a wall board, such for instance, as is used in build in construction, and has forits, rincipal ob ect to provide such a board wit a body of insulating material ,of suitable thickness, the side of which being attachable to the building frame having applied or fixed thereto a surface covering of fire proof material, and the opposite side of said insulating material having applied or fixed thereto a covering of fragile material adapted to receive surface decorations and belng preferably covered with a protecting covering or sheet reinforcing said fragile material and protectingthe edges thereof.
The invention has for further ob ect to provide a wall board, the base or body of which is composed of cork; the surface. or side attachable to the building frame being covered or havin affixed thereto a, sheet of fire proof material, preferably of asbestos and its opposite side or surface having applied or aflixed thereto a surfacing material, preferably of plaster, and the exposed surface of said plaster having aflixed or ap plied thereto a covering of preferably fibrous material, such as paper, which not only acts as a reinforcement for the plaster and to protect its edges against crumbling or dis integration due to handling but'wh ch is also capable of receiving surface decorations, such as paint or other ornamentation. Both the plaster and surface covering therefor being provided with openings arranged in any desired manner for the reception of securing means, such as nails, which are passe through the body and fire roof material and then secured in the bui ding frame; I the heads of said nails being seated within said openings and when the wall is applied to a building frame, said openings may then be filled with plaster or other suitable filler, whereby smooth upper surface of the wall board may be presented. I
That the invention may be more fully understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawin forming a part of the present description and illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved wall board, the reinforcing an pro-.
tecting covering or sheet for the plaster being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a front view in elevation showing y 1 mp d iwa lboa dv a pli d to a z.
am or building frame ,wq T
ike characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawing, 1 designates a base or body of insulating material of suitable thickness, preferably ground cork, and ,to the side of said body which is attachable to the building frame or wall 2 is applied or fixed in any suitable manner a surface covering of fire proof material3, preferably asbestos. To the opposite side or surface of the body 1 is applied or afiixed in any suitable manner a covering of surfacing material 4, such as plaster or the equivalent suitable for the purpose, which is adapted to receive surface decorations, such as paint or other ornamentation not shown. Due to the fragility of plaster and other like surfacing materials which may be used, I have found it desirable to provide a protecting and reinforc-.
ing covering or fibrous material 5, such as paper, see Fig. 1, which is adapted to rein force and protect the surfacing material 4 and prevent its body and edges from crumbling and breaking due to shipping and handling. It is obvious that a wall board having this construction and arrangement of parts makes the same an ideal building material for general construction purposes, as it is'impervious to fire due to the surface covering of asbestos, which surface is attachable to the building frame or wall; an ins u lator against heat and cold due to the central body of cork, and surfacing material of plaster, plaster of Paris, gypsum, or the equisame would. appear if taken on the line 2+2,
valent suitable for the purpose, adapted for building construction the use and cost of providing laths and plaster.
In order that a smooth exterior surface of the wall board may be presented after the samehas been applied to the building frame or wall, I further provide in the construction of the same, openings or depressionsfi, see Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which may be arranged in any suitable manner, however, are preferably arranged adjacent its several ed lgfs and crosswise immediately thereof.
- wall board'- preferred arrangement of the openin s 6 afford" a more standard method andcm of securing the wall board to the buildin .frame or wall 2, best seen ,in.Fig. 3,,sai
openings 6, see Fig. 3, being formed in the surfacing material 4 and covermg therefor,
exposing to view the insulating body 1 which. are adapted to receiveand orm seats for securing means, such as nails 7. The
ing frame or wall 2, see Fig. 2, the openings 6 and nail heads8,seeFig. 3, are then con- .cealed from view by: filling the openings withplaster or other suitable. filler, whereby a smooth exterior surface of the wall board ma be had. Cracks or openings, 9, see Fig.
2, y reason of adjacent ly secured wall boards are also filled and covered in the same manner, if necessary. The application of the plaster or filler to the openings 6 and cracks or openings 9 eliminates all trace of interrupted surfaces and provides a smooth exterior wall surface for decoration, such as aint or otherornamentation.
aving thus described my invention, it'is obvious that various material modifications may be made in the samewithout departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction and arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim is 1. A wall board, comprising an insulating mamas ving been secured to the -build-- fixe in juxtaposition to one surface of said body and a surfacing material of plaster fixed in juxtaposition .to the opposite our face of said '2. A wall board, comprising a} insulating body of cork, a fire proof facing of asbestos fixed injuxtaposition to one surface of said body, a surfacing material of plaster fixed fixed in juxtaposition to one surface of said body, a surfacing. material ofplaster fixed in guxta osition to the opposite surface of sai bo y, and a protectin covering for said plaster surface, said sur acing material and covering'therefor provided with openings forming seats for the reception 0 curing means. In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my hand and seal this 24th day of February, 1927.
