This invention relates to machines used for routing out space for inlaying work and more especially to that class of such machines adapted to work on a thin piece of bone, ivory, wood or similar substance such as is used for the covering ofthe handles of pocket knives, where it is required to produce a recess in said coverings for the inlay of a name plate or shield.
My present improvements embody new and improved mechanism for holding and operating the work and dies in combination with the chisels for routing out the material in making the required platerecess. The chisels used and the means for operation of such chisels are described inLetters Patent heretofore obtained by me, numbered 985,-
117. The present improvemcntsrelate particularly to the die and its appurtenances for routing the space in the material operated upon and also the means for receiving and holding said die in its place.

upper end of the spiral shaft. The extension I 6. at its top is also provided with a fulcrum 11, in which is pivoted a link 12, to support the driver or walking beam 18, having the forked end 13 and which is actuated by means of the crank arm 14 on the shaft 4 through the connecting link 15.
The forked end 13 has'pivoted therein a nut. not shown, through which plays, when the walking beam 13, is actuated, a driving spiral shaft 17, the journal ends of which are j ournaled in the bearings 9 and 10. At the lower end of the spiral shaft 17 is an adjustable collar 18; which is secured to the spiral shaft and forms a surface to support the same on the bearing 10. A clamping lug 21., having the shank 21 and the heel 22 is detachably connected to the head 20 and is provided with openings for the clamping screws 23. A tool holder 24, has formed therewith a pair of openings 25, 26 for the upper ends of routing tools 27, one of which onlyis shown. The screws 28, detachably clamp the upper ends of the routing tools to the holder 24.. When the Walking beam 13 oscillates, the spiral shaft 17 is rotated first in one direction and then in the reverse direct-ion.
Vhen the narrowest part of the mortise that isbeing cut in the material operated or two routing tools as the shape or size of the mortise to be out requires. I prefer to use only one tool or bit for the greater portion of the work. It must be understood that in speaking of the routing chisels the work tool. or tools, are used to designate substantially the same thing, two chisels making up the routing tool when the style or size of the space in the die permits.
In the face 6 of the extension 6 is fastened the rack plate 29 having the rack teeth 29. Dovetail guides 80are formed on the opposite sides of the base 6. A movable frame 31 is indicated with the head 32. A 1 vertical guide slot having the beveled end 33 i and straight end 33, is formed in the frame 31. A second vertical guide slot having the beveled ends 34: and 34 is also formed in the frame 31. it gib 35 is located between the straight end 33, and its accompanying dovetail guide 30. A pair of bolts 36 of which only one shown extend through" the gib 35 and are in threaded engagement with the frame ill. A screw 3? has fastened thereto a socket 37" having the handle 37?. The screw 37 is in threaded engagement with the frame- 31 and bears against the gib 35 to properly adjust the latter and maintains the frame 31 in proper position A cavity 38 is formed in the head 32, and a pinion 39 is located in said cavityi A shaft -O having the shank i1 oli an small diameter is journaled in the head: 32. The said bracket has one side bearing against the end ill of the vertical guide slot and its other side against the gib -14, which latter in turn bears against the beveled end 34. A projecting; arm- 48- is detaehably fastened to the top face of the head 32, by means of the screws 49. An adjusting screw 50 is in threaded engagement with the arm 48- and a jam nut 51' is provided for the screw 50, which latter is adapted to bear on the top face of the leg. 4 L to vertically adjust the latter relatively to frame 31. By means of thcscrews ell the leg 44 canbe adjusted so it will slide freely vertically without lost motion.
A die plate holder is indicated in its entirety by the body portion 53 having the elongated opening 54:. A thickened end 55 having the beveled. inner locking edge 56 is formed with the body portion A bolt opening 571's formed in the thickened end as shown at 58 and has formed theiiewith the spring member 59 having the beveled inner locking edge (30: 'A bolt opening 61L is formed in the: thickened portion. The inner face 552 and the inclined locking edges 56 and 60 constitutea seat for the die plate to be described. The die plate holder 52 is detachably fastened to the foot l7 by means of bolts 61, and 6L, the face 52" ot" the die holder bears against the under face of said foot 47.
Secured to the guide way 2 of the pedestal l is a sliding block (55, which can be clamped in different positions by means of the set screw 66. A rack bar (38 is slidably guided in the block 65 and has the table 69 at its upper end. A block T0 is fastened to the table 69 by means of the bolts 71.. A work holder 72 is pivoted to the block 70 by means of the pivot 73. The "work holder 72 is recessed on its upper face for the plates 78 which are clamped in position by means of the bolts 79. l lolding; pins 80 extend upwardly from; the plates 78 audi are intended to fit into holes in the covers to he described. By means of this 1onstruction the work: holder 72 is enabled to tilt to adjust itselfi to inequalities of the covers The plates 78 are: slotted for the passage of the bolts 79, to' penmit adjustment. The work holder 72 can rock or tilt for the purpose 01? allowing a: small degree of tneedom of movement for the inequalities in the thickness along the length of the covers operated upom so the bottom of the cavity will be parallel to the top of the covers. The die plate is indicated at 82 with the beveled ends 83 and the die opening; 85; The cover to be operated: upon is imlicated at 86 with the openings 87, and the recessed cavity which has been made by the routing tool. 27 through theopening- 85 ot the die plate Q12.

Simultaneously with the dropping of the work holder the belt is autolmiticallv shifted to the loose pulley '1 (l6; and the rout ing tool 27 comes to a rest.
To locate the die plate 82 in the die plate holder it pushed la-tween the locking edges 56 and till. The die plate 852 is then tightly clamped in place.

The plate 110, for the knife cover preferably having the openings 111 may be then readily located in the routed cavity 88 and fastened in place by cement or by pins extending from the cover 86.
It will be observed that in my new construction the die plate holder, 52, and its appurtenances are held fixedly attached to the sliding frame 31 whilst the dies may be readily removed by loosening the nuts on the screws 61 and 61 and other dies for the routing of various shapes substituted.
I claim:
-1. In a machine of the class described a routing tool rotatively supported therein, a movable frame slidably supported in the machine, a die plate holder carried by said frame, said holder having a spring member to clamp a die plate thereto and means for securing the die plate in the holder substantially as shown and described.
2. In a machine of the class described the combination of a routing tool rotatively supported therein, means to rotate the routing tool in reversed directions, a movable frame slidabl supported in the machine, a die plate older carried by said 'ame, said holder having a retaining spring member, a adapted to be locked to said holder, means to fasten said die plate holder to said frame, said means simultaneously clamping said die plate to said holder.
3. In a machine of the class described the combination of a routing tool supported therein, means to rotate the routing tool in reversed directions, a die plate holder having an opening, fastened in the machine and disposed so that the routing tool extends through its opening, said die plate holder having a locking edge at one portion thereof, and having a thickened end spaced from said locking edge, a spring member formed with said thickened end, said spring member having a beveled locking edge and a die plate having a work opening, adapted to be detachably clamped to said holder, substantially as and for the purpose shown and dc scribed.
4. In a machine of the class described the combination of a routing tool, means to rotate said tool in reversed directions, a die plate holder having an opening for the pas sage of the routing tool detachably sup ported in the machine, said die plate holder having a beveled locking edge at one portion thereof, a spring member having a beveled locking edge formed with the die plate holder, and spaced from the other locking edge, a die plate having beveled edges and a work opening-"for 'saidxliold'er, with itssbeveled edges adapted to engage the :lockingedges of the holder, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described. 7 i i i 5. In a machine of the class described the combination of an extension supported therein, a movable frame in slidable relation to said extension, a rack plate connected to said extension, a pinion journaled to said frame and in mesh with rack plate, means to clamp the frame at different levels to said extension, a bracket slidably connected to said frame, an adjust ing screw extending from said frame and adapted to bear against said bracket to ad just the latter relatively to said frame and a die plate holder detachably connected to the frame. In a machine of the class described the combination of an extension supported therein, a movable frame in slidable relation to said extension a rack plate connected to said extension, a pinion journaled to said frame in mesh with the teeth of the rack plate, means to turn the pinion, a gib interposed between the frame and extension,
