G. B. M MULL'EN NURSING BOTTLE Filed Jan. 7. 1927 ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Jan, 24, 1928,
GEORGE 1B. MCMULLEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSEGNOB SAN ITARY NURSING BOTTLE COMPANY, LING, PORATIO'N OF PENNSYLVANIA;
intrastate BOTTLE.
Application filed January '7, 1927. Serial No. 159,644.
The present invention relates to an improved nursing bottle, and it is the purpose of the invention to provide an article of manufacture of this nature which is sanitary in 5 every respect and may be thoroughly sterilized and cleansed, and will eliminate the use of rubber nipples which have been found unsatisfactory due to insanitation. It is well known that rubber nipples due to being sterilized soon wear out and will easily tear when stretched over the mouth of the bottle.
It is also well known that bottles with pouring outlets have been in existence for ages, therefore, it is not the purpose to claim a bottle oi? the present character in the broadest sense, such as may include bottles with pouring outlets.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a nursing bottle to be made of any suitable material, preferably glass, provided with an integral closing nipple having an outlet passage relatively small in diameter, the inner end and the outer end of the passage being substantially smaller than the intermediate diameter, allowing the milk or the contents of the bottle to flow readily when a suction is created, the fact is the space between both ends of the passage fill up and an excessive flow of the fluid is so checked but as soon as sufficient suction is created, the milk or other contents will discharge readily.
Still another purpose is to provide a nursing bottle with its bottom open and provided with exterior threads, there being a cover for closing the open bottom, to retain the con tents in the receptacle. By removal of the ,closure or cover it is possible to easily sterihas and cleanse the bottle interiorly as well as eXteriorly.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitive and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modification of details and preparations may be made in the construction of the device according to circumstances. p v
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: I
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the 01? PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, CDR- improved nursing bottle constructed in accordance with the invention. 7
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional View through the nipple of the bottle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 identifies the body of the bottle which may be made in any desired shape, preferably trustro-conical, the bottle to be made of any suitable material, preferably glass.
The bottom of the bottle is open and has exterior threads 2, though not necessarily, as it is possible to form the threads interiorly of the bottle. The bottom of the bottle is covered by means of aclosure 3, which may be made of any suitable material, preterably aluminum, as such material eliminates the possibility of corrosion. This closure 3 threadingly engages with the bot tie, and it the threads are constructed interiorly of the bottle, then it is obvious that the closure may have exterior threads.
The top of the bottle terminates in a nursing nipple integrally formed with the body, and constructed through the nipple a is a fluid discharging passage 5. This passage 5 is relatively small in diameter, and obviously so constructed as to check excessive discharge of the fluid, unless suction is created at the outlet end of the passage. In other words the passage has its inner and outer ends of less diameter than the intermediate portion 6, and it has been found through experiments that such a construction of passage acts o limit the excessive discharge of the contents of the bottle unless sufiicient suction is created at the outlet end of the passage. suction has ceased the passage fills up and acts to prevent the excessive discharge of the fluid. The nipple is so shaped that the mouth of the baby may easily fit over the flared end of the nipple, which will prevent the nipple from leaving the mouth, the flared end providing means over which the gums ot the babys mouth may easily engage, to insure a firm grip on the bottle. The shape of the nipple ing the cutting of teeth, while a baby is nursing. a
The invention having been set forth, whatis claimed is:
As an article of 1nanufacture,a nursing When will serve as a means of iacilitatbottle C(JlllPl'lSll'lg a body provided with anintegral nursing nipple, the extremity thereof being outwardly flared and its end laee oval shaped, the flared portion acting as means to insure a firm grip of the gums on the nipple, said nipple having a discharge passage formed axially tliei-etlirough, one portion of the passage being of a small diameter, and another portion of said passage being of 21 still less diameter, the still less diameter of the passage being beyond the first diameter of the passage, constituting means to elieck the excessive flow of the contents of the bottle in the absence of suction created at the outer end of the passage.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
GEORGE B. MQMULLEN.
