rllhis invention relates to a charge heating and n'iiing` device tor internal combustion engines rnd it has t'or its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device oit' this nature adapted to he loeated in the path of the fuel charge from the carouretor to the intake manitold, and coi'nprising a plurality ot electrically heated surfaces and means tor causingl the charge to travel in a tortuous path and to be successively brought into contact with a ,'ilurality et such heated surfaces, so that the charge will he thoroug ly mixed, broken up and heated, bel'ore entering the combustion chambers ot the engine.

The device ot the present invention comprises a` Cylindrical body 4, the upper end of which is closed by a. head 2 and the lower end ot' which closed by a bottom 7. 1n applying the device to an engine, the intake manifold is interrupted and the head 2 is connected to a pipe 1 constituting an upper part ont the manifold and the bottom 7 is connected to a pipe 8, which, in turn, leads to the carburetor (not shown).

Upper and lower closure pates 1G are bound against the ring 17 by means ot washers 15 and torni a closed chamber within which a heating coil 20 is located, said coil being supported by an insulating member of porcelain or other suitable material 21. The upper edge ot the band Q2 projects above the lower end of the extension formed by the neclr eX- tension 2a and the washer 14, while the lower edge ot the band 22 projects below the upper end oli a neck extension 7 of the bottom or base 7. The lower heater is held in place by screws 5 and 6 which pass through the outer casing el and take into the ring 17. The screw 5 has an opening formed therethrough 'for the passage of a feed wire 1S by means ot' which current is supplied to the lower heater 20. Spacing washers 19 surround the screws and (3 and suitably space the lower heater within the ring or casing t.
The direction of travel ot they cl'iarge is indicated hy the arrows, from which it will he seen that the incoming charge passing through the neck extension 7a.y tiret iinpinges upon the lower heated plate 1G, is then caused to travel outwardly and downwardly around the lower edge of the ring 22, then upwardly outside otl said ring between said ring and the casing Ll', until it impinges upon the upper heat-ed element 13 where its direction ot tlow is reversed and ittravels downwardly over the upper edge of the ring 22 and again iinpinges upon a heated surface constituted by the upper plate 16, and passes finally out ot the neel; extension 2, into the pipe l, from whence it linds its way into the combustion chambers of the engine.
From the foregoing description it will he seen that a highly etlicient device tor the purposes set forth is here presented. However, it iste be understood that the'invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms 0r the spirit of the appended claims. Having described my invention what I claim is:
l. A device or' the character described comprising an electric lheating unit, a chamber in which said unit is located, savio chamber comprising closure plates, one upon each side of said heating unit, anentrance conduit terminating adjacent one of said plates, a discharge conduit having its point ot beginning adjacent the other or" said plates, and means adjacent the mouth of the discharge conduit for detiecting and reversing the iiow of the charge, the incoming charge impinging irst upon one of said plates, then traveling around the heating unit and by such deflection being caused to in'ipinge upon the other of said plates and then passing out ot' the discharge conduit` A device of the character described comprising a mainv casing, a heater located therein comprising a heating unit, a closure plate upony each sideof said 4heating` unit, an enclosingring .extending .out vardly upon each side o1 said closure plates, a discharge conduit for incoming fuel charge terminating .adjacent one ot said plates and within the coniinesaot said ring and aconduit for conducting the charge away from the heater' having its point of beginning adjacent the other oi said plates and within the contines et said ring, the incoming charge impinging first upon one of said plates, then traveling around the adjacent edge ot said ring, thence between the ring and the main casing, thence about the other edge of said ring and inipinging upon the other of said plates l carrie-d by both the top and bottom, an up-V heating element carried by the top, a plate enclosing the saine and a lower heating eleinpnt cpmprising a ring the upper edge of nic i ne per extends above the neck extension of he top and the lower edge of which extends Jeiow the lreel; extension of the bottom, a ieating element located within said ring, p enclosing said heating element, one
