FLAG ARM AND BOD ASSEMBLY.
Application filed October 20, 1926. Serial No. 142,857.
The present invention relates to an improvement in flag arm and rod assembly for meters generally and more particularly designed for gas meters as at present universally used.
The invention has for its object to provide a flag arm and rod assembly which will not only be eiiicient but one which will resist any reasonable strain placed upon the same, due
to the fluctuations in the gas pressure, and preclude the flag arm from breaking loose or separating from the flag rod under slightly abnormal conditions. To provide a flag rod disc constructed in such a manner that the same will have interlocking engagement with the flag rod when mounted thereon and secured thereto to afford a relatively large area for lying beneath and supporting the flag arm.
To provide a flag arm which can be firmly united to the flag rod and disc in any desired position and made fast thereto.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the flag rod showing the notched end.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the flag rod disc illustrating the keyed aperture therein.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the flag arm illustrating the central aperture provided with a plurality of slots radiating therefrom.
Fig. 4c is a perspective view showing the disc in position upon the flag rod.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the rod, disc and flag arm in assembled position.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the device illustrating the method of attaching the constituent parts into an integral unit.
Fig. 7 is a view in vertical section, illustrating the meter showing the relative position of the flag arm and rod assembly therein.
In the drawings, wherein one embodiment of my invention is illustrated, the numeral 1 lesignates a conventional meter box provided with a partition 2, separating the interior of the box into the well known diaphragm and valve compartment 2 and the upper flag arm mechanism control compartment 2 "Within the meter box 1, and extending through the partition 2 are the flag rods 3, the upper end of each of which is notched or keyed at 4:, the lower end of each of said notches being pro vided with a shoulder Q, as shown in Fig. 1. Adapted for positioning over each of said rods 3 is a flag rod disc 5, said discs being provided with a central aperture 6 the con tour of which corresponds to the contour of the keyed end 4: of the rod 3, thus preventing the disc from rotation, when said disc is in position upon the shoulder 4: as shown in Fig. 4:. Any suitable means may be employeol, such as solder, to unite the discs 5 to the rods 8, which when so attached becomes integral therewith.
Resting on each disc 5 is a flag arm 7, each provided with an aperture 8 larger than the diameter of the rod 3 so as to allow the arms '7 to rest upon said discs. The apertures 8 are tion of attaching solder 9 or other suitable means, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The free ends 10 of the flag arms 7 are attached in any well lmown manner to the tangent mechanism of the meter, not shown, this tangent means forming no part of the present invention.
lVhile an embodiment of the invention is illustrated wherein the rod is formed with one flat portion and the flag arm is provided with slots radiating from the rod receiving aperture, it is to be understood that the end of the rod may be of polygonal formation, the disc aperture may be fashioned to the contour or substantially the contour thereof, and the portion of the flag arm adjacent to the rod aperture may be fashioned in a manner to afford a relatively large area to receive the binding medium which unites with the disc, rod end and flag arm end.
I claim A flag arm and rod assembly for meters comprising a flag rod provided at one end with a relatively flat face, the base of said face forming a shoulder, a disc provided with a rod receiving aperture therein, the configuration of which corresponds in outline to the cross sectional configuration of the end of said rod above said shoulder, said disc being positioned snugly over said rod and resting on said shoulder, a flag arm provided with an aperture for receiving the end of said rod for resting on the up er surface of said disc, said flag arm provi ed at a point overlying said disc with a solder receiving aperture extending therethrough, a readlly fusible head member enveloping said rod, the end of said arm, and passing through 10 said apertures into contact with said disc, thereby inseparably uniting all of said parts.
In testimony "whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
