It will be appreciated that a pair of these rollers are located in spaced relation beneath the retort and transversely of the retort for properly supporting the intermediate portions of the retort, as shown in Figure l. The extreme ends 15 and 21 are provided with a ring gear as shown at 35 which are maintained in engagement with gears 36 driven synchronously from shafts 37. These shafts extend to any suitable rotating element. These shafts are provided with bearings 38 and 39 .formed in the standards 1 0 and 11.

The operation ot my device is as follows;
The shale is admitted through the opening 40 Jin the retort and when a sutiicient quantity has been supplied the cover 41 is bolted in position and the shafts 37 are revolved whereby the retort will be revolved and the speed of revolution is predetermined and maintained substantially constant. In order to create a vacuum in the retort 16 a vacuum pump may be connected With the pipe 26 with the valve 28 closed and the gas is turned on to the burners afl located below the retort. It Will be' appreciated that the retort may he heated in any suitablev manner as by means of grates or an electric heating resistance secured to the outer surface of the retort and which is placed in communication with a source of current by a revolving contact.
The pressure is kept reduced in the retort during the distillation of the oil shales and during the total time of heating except when steam is admitted so that cracking is reduced and the time of distillation is likewise reduced. By such a` process the quan tity of material handled Within a deiinite time will be greatly increased. The vacuum is continuous from the retort to the condensers.
