IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-BROOMS.

Spec'tication forming part of Letters Patent No. 165.601, dated Ju y 13, 1875; application filed June 10, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW MAURER, of the city of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in a sheet-metal box to form the connection between a handle and a lot of broom-corn to form a broom, dispensing with the usual bindin g, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is afront view of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the sheetmetal box.

A represents a box made of tin, copper, or sheet-iron, and in the shape of the upper end of the broom above the binding in brooms made in the usual style. The lower two-thirds part of one of the large sides of the box forms a hinged lid, B. In the center of the upper end of the box A is an opening with a tube or socket, O, to receive the broom-handle D. On the lower and open end of the box are two rows of small teeth, a, one row on the upper and one on the lower side of the box. There is also a row of large teeth, I), through the middle of the box, reaching from the bottom side of the box to the lid. These teeth b are fastened to the bottom side of the box, except the one in the center, which is fastened to the lid, so that when the lid is open the broom-handle can be inserted into the tube 0 with the big end inside the box, thus preventing the box from slipping off from the handle. d (Z are four screws fastened to the lower side of the box near the bottom row of teeth,'a. These screws reach through holes in the lid when the lid is down, and are fastened by nuts 0 e.

The lid B is opened and the handle D inserted into the tube C. The box is then filled with broom-corn, thelid shutdown and screwed tight, when the broom is ready for use.

With this invention the ordinary binding of brooms is dispensed with, and any person can make his own brooms.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a sheet-metal box for fastening broom corn, the hinged lid B, provided at its center with spike b, for the purpose of securing the handle and enabling it to be easily removed from the box, substantially as set forth.

2. In a sheet-metal box for fastening broomcorn, the part A, provided with small teeth a a and large teeth I) b, in combination with hinged lid B, provided with small teeth a and spike b, all as and for the purpose set forth.
