The reA suit ot this, therefore, is that the two streams ot Water ot dii'tere-nt temperatures are merged to produce an elongated body ot Water the ten'iperature ot which varies grad ually` from a temperature o'V approximately 1550 at one end ot the water pan to a teme perature ot approximately 1150 at the opposite end thereof. rilhe bottom Vall ot the water pau 25 is provided with groups oi discharge apertures spaced longitudinally ot said Water pan, and theretore as the bottles pass benrath said water pan said bottles encounter successive showers ot water, each ot 'which is slightly cooler than the preceding' shower ot water.
WTater trom the compartment 0 is pumped into the Water pan 2G, this Water beingat a temperature ot approirimately 800, and said water tioivs toward and merges with a stream oft water being,l pumped into the water pan 20 at the opposite end thereof, the last mentioned Water comingl trom the compartment 5 and beingl approxin'ia-teiy 1100. Here again the result will be that an elongated body ot Water will be produced the temijierature of which gradually varies :trom a ytemperature o't approximately 1050 :it one ot its ends to a temperature oic approximately llfr 850 at its opposite end. The water within the water pan 26 will escape through the groups of discharge apertures in the bottom wall thereof,v and asa result the bottles` moving through the apparatus here also will encounter successive showers of water each of which is slightly cooler than the preceding` shower of water. Y
In like manner water at a temperature of approximately 800 is pumped from the compartment 6 into the water pan 27 at one `end thereof,and water from an outside sourc-e at ai-temperature of approximately 55o is introduced into said pan 27 at the opposite end thereof. These two streams of Water flow toward each other and merge.
the result being` that an elongated body of water-is produced the temperature of which gradually varies, the teniperature of said body of'water being approximately 75D at one end and D, at the opposite end thereof. Also, this body of kwater is discharged through the apertures in the bottom wall of the `water pan and therefore the bottles encounter showers ofr water each of which is slightly cooler than the preceding shower of water.
Finally the water which is introduced into compartment27 by the pipe 47 is showered down on thebottles as they pass beneath the apertures in the bottom wall of said compartment 27, further reducing' the temper: ture of the bottles to approximately 550. It is apparent, therefore, that the temperature A of the bottles or otherarticles is gradually reduced as they pass through the apparatus so that when ythey are finally discharged from theV apparatus they may be immediately filled withrelatively cold liquid'without danger of cracking said bottles.
As already stated herein, the temperatures of the .liquid `within the compartments 3 and Kwhile'waterV at a temperature of approximately 90 is being introduced into the comy partment 6 to maintain the water therein at a temperature of approximately 800.
In addition to this the vwater will take up some of the-heat from the bottles as said water is showered over said bottles` so that the water which pours back into the. com-- partments will bel slightly hotter than it" lwas when saidr water passed through the disf .charge apertures in the bottom wallsof the water pans, although this additional heat of the water will be balanced by cooler water iiowing through the overflow apertures 7 and by the cool water flowingl into the compartment 6 from the con'ipartment Q7 of the receptacle QT. In Fig. l, l have indicated the approximate temperatures of the water issuing from the groups of apertures formed in the bottom walls of the water pans.
To preventsolid matter from paf-@snpthrough the inlet pipes 32. 37 and 4t2 to the pump sections provide the open end of each of said pipes with a suitable, screen. By merely tryingy the delivery of the coolest water to the pipe eti' it is apparent that the final temperature and all intermediate temperatures may he varied.
There a constant ilow of water into the apparatus through the pipe -l-7 and it is. of course7 necessary to provide some means for an equal amount of water to escape from the apparatus. l therefore provide the compartment Llwith an overow pipe 30 and permit water from the compartment to overflow into the compartment 5 throne-h the overflo i aperture 7 in the lriiartition between said compartments. Also, water from the compartment 5 flows through the overtiow aperture in the partition Q between the compartments it and 5 and excess water within the coii'lp'artment 4lis permitted to overflow therefrom through the overflow pipe GO. it is apparent that in this way the same water is used for successive operations and a great saving is therefore realized in the amount of water used.
