Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE TOWER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,558, dated February 3, 1857.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Aunosn TOWER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which makes a part of this specification.
The nature of invention consists in the application and use of projection or raised seats for valves, and the ebb waterway, when the discharge pipe is so constructed or arranged as to lead the water out from or below the top surface of the valve seat, and out from the ebb waterway as hereafter described.
The following is a description of a double acting lift and force pump with my projective or raised seats connected with it.
The drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of the pumps, valves and seats taken through the center.
A, A are two pump barrels situated on opposite sides of the air chamber c.
The plungers c, c which are nearly of the same diameter'as the barrels of the pumps are made hollow in the form of trunks and in place of carrying packing to fit the interior of the pump barrels they are packed tight by passing through the packing and packing boxes I, I and J, J at the top of the pump barrels, by which means the packing may easily be tightened without removing the plungers.
The connecting rods O', O are jointed at the bottoms of the plungers at O2, O2 and the upper ends are jointed to the vibrating lever N which may be driven by hand or by power. I propose to make the plungers of brass or composition which is not liable to oxidation Afrom sea water, so that this pump may be used on board ships as a bilge or head pump.
Fis a supply pipe which leads into a waterway E which conducts the water right and left into and through the lower valve seats opening into the pump barrels A, A.
H, H are two branch pipes leading out from the valve seat K and the ebb waterway L up to the upper valve seats into the air chamber G and forced out of the opening M to which may be attached a hose or pipe.
D, D, D, D are ball valves which are secured upon the projective or raised seats K, K, K, K (around which is the ebb water L, L, L, L) by the wires B, B, B, B so that the valves are only allowed to raise a certain height from their seats. The valve seats are raised considerably above the level of the ebb-waterway L, so that all substances that may pass the valves may ebb down and be forced away from the valves, by which arrangement the liability to claying or choking is obviated since there is no space afforded for the lodgment of foreign solid matter which the water may contain upon theivalve or seat, and as the valve seat is raised considerably any solid matter which has passed through the valves will be prevented from returning back again or becoming deposited in the opening of the valves. Thus ,it will be perceived by my improvement that vessels carrying grain, etc., can be saved from danger when in a sinking condition, as it is impossible for any substances that may pass through the basket or strainer to clog or choke the valves, thereby making my improvementof valuable consideration in the manufacturing of pumps.
I do not claim the raised or projective valve seat and ebb water as new when the water and other iiuids, substances, etc., are not discharged from the ebb waterway L below the surface of the top of the valve seat as it will be perceived that foreign or heavy substances will flow over the valve seat and soon fill the ebb waterway and then come in contact with and choke the valve; therefore That I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The raised or projective seat K and ebb waterway L, when the water, etc., is discharged from the ebb waterway below the surface of the top of the raised or projective seat, thereby allowing all foreign or heavy substances that flow over the seat to be instantly forced out, consequently the valve at all times has free play and can not become choked. 4
Patented in England July 23d, 1856, in France October 1st, 1856, and in Belgium Oct-ober 7th, 1856.
