L. K. ALDRICH DELIVERY FOR FOLDING MACHINES Filed Aug. 31, 1925 4 Sheets-Sheet' Patented Jan. 10, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT 7 OFFICE.
LESTER KYLE ALDRICH, OE SIDNEY, OHIO DELIVERY FOR- FOLDING MACHINES.
Application filed August 31, 1825. Serial No. 53,594.
The invention relates to improvements in deliveries for folding machines.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of deliveries for folding machines and to provide simple, practical and eflicient means for receiving and packing folded sheets which will be ca.- pable of ready adjustment to accommodate folded sheets of different size folds.
A further object of the invention is to provide a delivery mechanism of this character equipped with means for driving the sheet with a positive motion until it reaches the delivery board thereby eliminating any drop of the sheet by gravity in traveling from the folding rolls to the delivery board, as dropping a sheet by gravity is always uncertain and almost physically impossible in the case of heavy stock such as rough paper and three ply tag board. It will readily be seen that a. machine sufliciently large to handle ten inch pages, operating on three inch pages would require aseven inch drop by gravity of such three inch pages in order for the latter to reach the delivery board from the folding rolls. The result would be a clogged delivery as small pages are springy and tend to open up in passing down the chute and friction of the sheets againstthe chute soon overcomes the weight of l the folded sheets and the latter fails to reach the delivery board. This objection is obviated in the iiresentinvention by the provision of means for raising and lowering the delivery board to eliminate the extra drop.
It is also an object of the invention to effect this raising and lowering of the delivery board without the necessity of any adjustment of the folding machine and to permit the delivery board to be raised and lowered while the folding machine is in operation.
Another object of the invention is to enable the packer head to be adjusted laterally without the addition or removal of any parts so that the packer head will operate properly with any adjustment of the delivery board and the chute which guides the paper from (he foldingrolls to the delivery board.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable delivery adapted. for use in machines having various types and arrangements of folding mechanism whether the same be either for parallel folding or square folding.
lVith these and other ob ects 11] view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement ofparts hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being undertood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a detail elevation" of the packer head.
Fig. at is a vertical sectional view illustrating the arrangement of the roll gears the folding rolls of the upper portions of the chutes being shown in elevation.
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the adi .justable deflector bar. v
Fig. 7 is a plan view partly in section illustrating the arrangement of a double delivery for use where the delivery is desired on both sides of a machine.
Fig. 8 is a detail side view of the upper portion of one of the double chutes.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention the delivery comprises in its con struction a pair ofvertically disposed chutes 1 located beneath and extending from the folding rolls hereinafter described to the delivery board 2 for guiding the. folded sheets of paper from the folded rolls to the delivery board. The vertical chutes l are provided with grooves or channels 3 to receivc'the folded sheets as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings and they are composed of spaced parallel sides or flanges and a connecting web or flange forming a channel chute. The chutes are provided at their upper portions with annular bosses 4 having sockets or openings for the reception of the inner ends of horizontal laterally extending supporting arms 5 consisting of rods secured at their inner ends by clamping screws 6 or other suitable fastening devices in the openings or sockets of the bosses 4 and extending outwardly from the chutes and slidably mounted in openings '7 of the frame of the machine and secured in their and it adjustment by clamping screws 8. The slidable adjustment of the arms 5 of the chutes will. enable the latter to be moved inwardly and outwardly with respect to each other to space the chutes the proper distance apart to suit the size of the folded sheets. The chutes are provided with vertical abutments 9 consisting of preferably reversely arranged channel portions termed by a flange l spaced' lroni and arrangcc in parallelism with the sides of the chute and connected with the same by a web or tlar e. The abutment may he constructed in any other desired manner as will be readily understood presents paper engaging face 11 against which the sheets are packed when the said sheets after deecending the chute and reaching the delivery board are tlipped out of the said chutes by a packer head 1'2.
The delivery board is suitably secured to and supported by transverse strips 1.3 of steel of other suitable material which extend acr es the lower face of the delivery board and are secured at their ends upon vertically slidable shoes 14: located beneath the deliver board at opposite sides thereof and provided at their upper and lower portions with spaced projecting lugs 15 arranged in pairs and forming ways for vertical guide bars 16. The vertical uide bar-s16 whichare constructed of suitable metal are bolted or otherwise secured to the frame of the machineahd they form guides or rolls on which the shoes slide in raising and lowering the delivery board and the said guide bars 16 are provided with a series of holes 17 arranged at intervals of the desired distance and adapted to receive removable plug-rs it) which also engage the shoes. The remorable plugs 18 consist of headed pins and are adapted to be arranged in any of: the holes l? of the vertical'guide bars and they extend in. 'ardly beyond the guide bars and their inner ends [it in suitable sockets or holes 19 in the shoes.
The delivery board is equipped with vertical late ally adjustable sides 20 and ithas a fixed central extension 21 located at the inner end o1 the delivery board and extending therefrom to a point between the chutes and it is adapted to form a stop and support for the folded sheets passing down the chute. The adjustable sides 20 are provided. with laterally extending arms 22 slidably niountcd in openings 23 in brackets 24 which are secured to the uppu' face of the delivery board at the inner end'thereot. The arms which preferably consist oi: rods are secured at their inner ends in openings or sockets 25 of metallic plates 26 which are arranged at the outer face of the sides 20 of the delivery board and suitably secured to the same.
