l 'em-namen: :n.irzriszia.y
.f applicati@ inea. may 1o,
iMy. invention relates to Iautom'atic lifting f -fdevices for vbreasts for` cotton .gins .and has foran-object to raise the breast, l.out of gin--r ningaposition should ther y,machine `become choked byan accumulation ofllint motherwise to lperfectlyfunction .from anycauser 'as byl the saws becoming clogged for the brushesfailing'to properly clean the same.y
i Under such conditions,- shouldk the machine continue to the operation,V the lint vrcotton becomes tightlywedged-between the ribsl coming into contact l with Kthe rapidly revolve, ing saws, `frequently tends toignite the same `'fective .working lof thetgin occurs thegin breastfwill be automatically liftedfromtlie sawsfso that they will no longer beiiiopera-rv tivecontact With-the cotton, and the feeding ofthecotton'totlie saws will be stopped.
- e .Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arl gindbreast 30,- thelupper Fend of which is rangement ofthe various kelements lforming the inventiomas more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had tothe.. accompanying drawings forming' part thereof, wherein like numerals refer to like pparts throughout and in which Figure .1..is.-;a perspective view of my.
device in operative position upon a gin frame.
Fig. 2 is a view of the breast lifting arm.
Fig. 3 is an end view showing the relative posit-ion of the saw ribs and breast lifting cam, and
Fig. l is a detail of the saw ribs.
Referring now Ito the drawings, I have shown my invention vadapted for use upon a grinning machine comprising a frame 5 upon `which. is transversely mounted the usual cylindrical saw set 6, the blades of which are arranged in spaced relation. Immedi- Aatelyy beneath the saw is arranged a transversely disposedy rock shaft 7 having ribs 8 secured thereto and extending upwardly between the blades of said saw. The shaft is suitably mounted in bearings 9, with 'one end thereof provided with a crank 10, the end of the crank being inserted in the block 11 formed in a lever 12 pivotally mounted intermediate its ends upon a bracket 13.
f One end of the lever is provided with a downwardly depending pin llslidably ar ranged in a vertically disposed guide 15 and 1927. .Serial No." 190,241.
Ahai-(ing itsend jadptedo. be inserted notches f16 formediin vagrod 117;'slidably sup@` y. vrportedin a boreprovided in the guide.` A.,
coiled spring 1 8 connects f the leverftofa ystationarypart ofthe framesoas to nor,-
mally maintain l the pin withinlone of Vthe saidnotches.
At onev end of the rodi..iil,7,riI attach i flange 19 havingits forwardendjattached to a Iblock 20, slidably arranged, on a bracket 2lsecured tothe frame, the 'blocks thereby being adyustably arranged on theubracket.so` as to A;
regulate the tension of` the Hspring. ',Alink A22v is attached to the oppositeend ofthe sliding rod.17 within lwhich. is4 formed a groove 23 and withinwhicha ppin24carried on an arm l25 is adjustably secured.f i 4 The larm 25 is iiXedly secured `to one yfend i of a. rock yshaft 26v which extends transversely of theffranie, andhasits opposite end 27 rotatably trained in bearing ,28 vand provided abreast lifting cam 29.`
The cam' 29 engages the lower endof a hingedly securedl t0 the, frame'as atl.'
A hand lever y 32 is arranged on thepend 0f the rock nShaft .26 OPPSt f from. the, ,Caml` whereby tliesame maybe returned to normal operative position.4 ,as y hereinafter explained.4
With the device in normal operative position, the breast will occupy a position as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, the position of the ribs 8 under suoli circumstances, be-l ing'shown in full lines. Should lintk accumulate between the blades of the saw, the
, ribs will be gradually forced into a position as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, there by turning the rocking shaft 7 operating through the crank 10 and lever 12 to raise the pin 14 out of engagement withthe rod 17 which is thereby released and causing the cam 29 to move out and downwardly so as to raise the gin breast out of position.
While I have described an operative form of my invention, I desire it to be understood that Ido not Wish to limit myself to the particular construction shown therein as Vvarious changes and modifications may be madewithoutv departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew is 2- n 1.' In an apparatus of the character described, whereby to control the operation of -Vio a gin under 'certain predetermined condi-l tions, a rock-shaft havingv a cam adapted toengage the gin breast, a slidably mounted rod attached to said shaft, means forvnor-l.
means adapted to operate said rod, a pin: v normally restraining the movement of saidV rod, and means for removing'said pin outvr of engagement therewith, whereby'tofcause the actuation of the rock shaft for throwing the breast out of ginning position.
3. In aY -gin breast lifting attachment a rock shaft havingacam adapted to engage the gin? breast', a-slidabl'y disposed rod, a
klink connecting said rodfwithv said shaft,
spring means adapted to operate said-rod, notches formed in Asaid rod, a pin adapted Vto be inserted in said notchesfa rock shaft having a plurality of ribs mounted "thereon, said shaft being. actuated through pres sure uponsaid ribs, and a lever operatively connecting said pin and said shaft, whereby Vunder certain Ypredetermined conditions lto cause the-actuation of saidl first named rock shaftfor throwing the breast out of ginning` position. v
4. In a gin breast lifting attachment, a
' rock shaft vhaving a calm arranged thereon and adapted to engage the'gin breast, a slidably mounted rod, a link connecting said rod and said shaft, spring actuating means for said rod, notches formed in said rod,
` a bracket` for said' rod' having a vertically Lesasez disposed bore, a pin slidably mounted in said' bore `andadapted to engage said notches, a rock shaft having a plurality of ribs adaptedto actuate, said shaft, and responsive toice'rtain predetermined ginning con ditions, aiid a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends having one end thereof attached to said'la'st-named rock shaft, and
its opposite end attached to said pin, and adapted through the actuation of said rock shaft to 'release` the pin whereby to throw the breast out of ginning position. y y
A 5. In a gin breast lifting device, a rock shaft having a cam arranged thereon and adapted to engage the gin breast, a slidably mounted rod, a link connecting saidrod and said rock shaft, springa'ctuating means for said rod, means for tensionally adjusting said'springs, a. bracket slidably supporting said rod and having a vertically disposed guide formed therein, notches in saidv rod, a pin slidably mountedA in saidv guideand adapted to engage said notches, means for:
normally retaining said pin in engaged position, Va rock shaft having a plurality -of ribs a'daptedto actuate the Vsameand re-l sponsive to certain ypredetermined ginning conditions, a crank formed at one end of said rock shaft,'and a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and having one end f secured to said crank'and the opposite end attached to said pin and adapted'through ithe actuation of said rock shaft. to release' the pin whereby to throw the breast out of ginning position.
