INVENTOR Patented Jan. 3, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN 0. MCKEAN, F WESTFIELD, MASSACI'IIIUSTxHTTS,` ASSIGNOR TO FOSTER MACHINE COMPANY, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
WIN DING MACHINE.
Application tiled November 2, 1926. Serial No. 145,851.
In package winding machines it has heretofore been common to build the holder for the package quite heavy so that the package Will rest with considerable weight on its winding drum, thereby producing a hard wound package.
In some cases it is desirable that a soft package be produced, for instance Where the package is to be dyed by the well known Franklin process, in which the package is alternately compressed and expanded in the dye bath.
To accomplish this soft winding Whenever desired without substantial reconstruction of the Winding mechanism, I have provided means whereby the pressure of the package on its winding drum is substantially counterbalanced.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings Which represent in transverse vertical section so much of the Winding machine as will give a clear understanding of my invention.
The Winding mechanism illustrated includes generally, the yarn traverse guide 1, its reciprocatlng cam 2, the Winding drum 3 and the package holder, which package holder is pivoted to rock on the shaft 4 and comprises the usual hub 5 having the depending arm 6 and the forwardly uprising arm 7 to which is secured the arm 8 which carries the package spindle 9, arranged in position to cause the package 10 to rest by gravity upon the winding drum 3.
I have provided means for substantially counterbalancing the Weight of the packageholder so that the package may be wound With the desired degree of evenness; which means in the present instance is shown as an arm 11 projecting rearwardly :trom the hub 5 of the package holder, upon which arm a weight 12 is adjustably secured.
It will be seen that by adjusting the position of the weight 12 on thearm 11, the package may be wound with any desired degree 0f softness according to the pressure exerted by the package on its winding drum, and that this object is accomplished without reconstructing the usual parts to any considerable extent.
It is evident thatA various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several 'parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not Wish to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. In a package Winding machine, winding mechanism including a Winding drum, a gravity actuated holder for pressing the package against the drum, and means for substantially counterbalancing the Weight of the holder to causethe package to rest lightly upon its Winding drum and thereby produce a soft wound package.
2. In a package Winding machine, Winding mechanism including a winding drum, a gravity actuated rocking holder for pressing the package against the drum, and means for substantially counterbalancing the weight of the holder to cause the package to rest lightly upon its winding drum and thereby produce a soft Wound package.
3. In a package winding machine, Winding mechanism including a winding drum, a gravity actuated holder for pressing the package against the drum, and Weighted means for substantially counterbalancing the Weight of the holder to cause the package to rest lightly upon its AWinding drum and thereby produce a soft wound package.
4. In a package winding machine, Winding mechanism including a winding drum, a gravity actuated rocking holder for pressing the package against the drum, and weighted means for substantially counterbalancing the weight of the holder to cause the package to rest lightly upon its Winding drum and thereby produce a soft Wound package.
5. In a package winding machine, winding mechanism including a Winding drum, a gravity actuated rocking holder for pressing the ackage against the drum, and means for su stantially counterbalancing the Weight of the holder to cause the package to rest lightly upon its winding drum and thereby produce a soft wound package, said means including a weighted arm.
6. In a package winding machine, winding mechanism including a winding drum, a gravity actuated rocking holder for pressing the package against the drum, .and means for substantially counterbalancing the weight of the holder to cause the package to rest lightly upon its winding drum andi i l justabl'e alongt le same. y l
