UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARLIE H. HICKS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIG-NOR TO GENERAL MOTORS COR- FORATION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
FRONT MOTOR MOUNTING.
Application filed January 8, 1927. Serial No. 159,865.
This invention relates to motor vehiclesl and more particularly to anr improved form of mounting, for suspending the front of the engine on the chassis frame.
5 In the customary three point. engine suspension 'arrangement for automobiles, it is desirable that the central front suspension point be located at the front of the engine cylinder block. In an automobile of a well 10 known manufacturer, the mounting has heretofore been such that the motor was supported thru the lower half of the front main bearing for the crankshaft. In order to replace the bearing, it has been necessary to remove and raise the motor from the front support, to permit access to the bearing.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a. single point mounting for the front of the engine, which is independent of the front bea-ring, and will permit removal of the bearing with the motorsccured in position and without disturbing` the mounting.
Other objects will he apparent from the following specification and the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a. front elevation, partly broken away, of the support between the front of the engine and chassis frame; Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the front engine mounting; und Figure 3 is a detail view illustrating the removal of the bearing cap.
Referring to the drawing, which shows a referred, but not necessarily the only embodiment of the invention, the reference character 1, indicates the front of the engine cylinder block, 2 the housing for the cam shaft d rive, and the driving pulley on the engine crankshaft, for the usual radiator fan. 'Ihe front main bearing for the crankshaft i consists of the upper and lower halves 5 and 6, and the bearing cap 7, held to the under side of the front end of the cylinder block by bolts S. A felt washer 9 between the bearing cap 'i' and oil pan 10, provides a seal to prevent lea Tage of crankcase oil.
Any suitable form of supports may be provided for the rear of the motor, and since such supports do not constitute al part of the present invention, they have not been illustrated.
In order to mount the front of the engine at a single point, and at the center thereof,
but independent of the main bearing, there is provided a U-shaped bracket or chair member-11, which straddles or overlies the bearing cap-7. The opposite ends of the U-shaped bracket are turned outwardly and secured to the underside of the cylinder block, beyond the bearing cap, by the belts 1,2-12, while the lcross portion connecting the upsta'nding side arms, is secured by the single bolt 13, to the transverse cross bar 14 of the chassis frame. In this instance, the cross bar 14 extends forwardly and upwardly, above the front axle 15 and affords a support for the radiator 16.
From the above description, it will be apparent that upon removal of the oil pan 10, the bolts S may be unthreaded from the cylinder block, and as clearly shown in Figure 3. the intermediate space afforded by the U-shaped bracket is sufficient to permit ready removal of the bearing cap 7, without disturbing` the mounting, which in addition to effecting a` saving of time for the repairman, also serves to eliminate the possibility of his failure to properly remount the engine in proper position.
lVhile the invention has been described more or less specifically it is to be understood, that the invention is not limited to the exact details, but that such obvious modifications may be made as come. within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a motor vehicle, the combination ef .an engine, a chassis frame member extending transversely of the engine, and means to support the front ond of the engine upon said frame member, including a member` connecting the engine and frame and adapted to overlie the front main crankshaft bearing of the engine and arranged for the ready removal of the bearing without disturbing said supporting means.
2. In a motor vehicle. the combination of an engine, a frame member and a connection therebetween, including a bracket having au intermediate space which. is adapted to overlie the front main crankshaft bearing of the engine, while permitting access thereto.
3. In a motor vehicle, the combination of a motor, a supporting frame therefor, means to mount one end of the motor, centrally thereof to said frame, including a. U-shaped bracket, adapted to straddle the front main crankshaft bearing, the opposite ends of the U-braeket being secured to the engine at points beyond the bearingcap7 and the cross portion of the bracket being secured to the frame, `the intermediate space afforded by the U-shaped bracket being' such as to permit removal of the bearing' cap Without disturbing` the engine mounting.
4. In a motor vehicle, the combination of an engine block, a bearing cap bearing, a chassis frame member extending transversely of the engine and a bracket connecting the front of the engine to the frame member, said bracket having' a space which is adapted to straddle'tho bearing cap and permit'i'e- `moval thereof. without disturbing the connection between the engine block and frame member. Y l v 5. In a` motor vehicle, the combination of a chassis frame member, an engine slipported thereon, having a removable shaft bearing overlying the frame member, and means or connecting` the engine with the frame member adjacent said' bearing, but independently thereof, the parts'b'eingarranged to permit access to the bearing Without disconnectingv 'the engine from the frame.
6. In a motor vehicle, the combination of a chassis frame member. an engine to be supported thereon, means vfor connecting lthe engine and frame memberg and a removable engine shaft bearing overlying said frame member and accessible for removal independently of the Said connectingnieans.-
