SEALED FRICTION-TOP METAL CONTAINER.

The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sheet metal sealed friction top containers, that is, containers where n the cover or top for closing the same is b secured to the body portion of the container by frictional contact, and is also secured by a sealing means which can be broken and removed. .An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the sealing of the container is accomplished by an inte ral metal sealing ring, which is folded a out parts of the container body and parts of the top or coverfor holding the same in tight sealed contact, and wherein said sealing rin is so constructed that it may be broken, am? one section thereof moved laterally away from another section for aliasing the cover or top from the container A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above ty e wherein the parts which are housed by t e sealing ring are hollow and elastic so that said parts can yield during the drawing of the housed parts into contact with each other to aid in making a tight seal.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a sealing ring of the above type which is lined on its inner face with paper, serving as a sealing means for making a tight closure.

hollow. Associated with this end of the conand the metal of the sealing ring broken thereby adjacent said tab, and one section of the sealing ring moved away from the other for releasing the parts housed by the sealing ring.
The invention is directed particularly to a sealed friction top metal container, that is,- a metal container wherein the cover therefor is held on the container body by friction, and wherein additional means is provided for sealin the friction top cover to the-body portion 0 the container. Thesealing means is so contructed that the same may be removed for releasing the cover without cutting the body portion of a cover, and therefore, the cover may be readily applied to the container body after the seal has been broken, and the container re-used as a friction top container.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the improved container is preferably made of metal, and includes a body portion 1 which as shown, is cylindrical. This body portion is substantially of the same diameter throughout its entire extent, and, therefore, a Wide, open mouth container is formed from which the contents of the container may be readily poured or removed without any of 80 the contents being trapped by shoulders or pockets formed in the container body. One end of this container body is closed: by an ordinary can end 2 which is secured to the body portion by a double seam 3.. At the other end of thecontainer body, the metal is rolled or. bent outwardly and thence downwardly and inwardly to provide a rolled seating flange 4 which is preferably tainer body is a cover '5. This cover 5 extends outwardly over the seating fian e 4 on the container body, and is thence bent inwardly as indicated at 7, and thence downwardly as indicated at 8. The portion 7 forms a support for the cover. The portion 8 forms a friction wall adapted to engage a friction wall on the inner face of the container body. The friction wall of the cover and the container body are nicely shaped and trued soas to have sufiicicnt frictional engagement to hold the cover on the container body against the usual bandling of the container, It is noted that the the metal used in making the container.
In order that the cover may be tightly secured to the body portion for sealin the same, an integral sealing ring 9 is provlded. This sealing rin is formed of a single piece of metal, and W111 be referred to, as an integral sealing ring. Said, sealing ring is provided with a portion 10 which overlies the top ortion of the cover, and a depending portion 11 which is adapted to extend down across the outer edge 12 of the cover, and the seating flange 4 on the body ortion of the container. This sealing ring as a portion 13 which is adapted to be bent underneath and against the seating flange 4 so that the cover 1s clamped against the'seating shoulder on-the contained body by said sealing ring,
' It will be noted that when" the metal of the cover is bent back to form the depending friction wall 8, the metal is slightly spaced from the flat top portion ofthe cover as indicated at 14. It is also noted that the seating flange on the container bod is in the form of a rolled bead which is hol ow. The purpose of spacing the metal from the top portion of the cover is to give a slight resiliency to the portions of the metal which are bound together by the sealing ring.
This is also the purpose of the hollow rolled bead forming the sealing'flange or shoulder on the container body.
The sealing ring is placed on the cover and the cover is held against the seating flange on the container body, and while so held in contact with the seating flange, the sealing rin is turned underneath the seating flange or ollow bead on the container body. This is preferably done by the inward movement of a spinning roller which moves in a direction at right angles to the wall of the container body. While the roller moves horizontally, it has a rounded upper edge and is so positioned as to press said edge inturned thereby, upwardly against said hollow bead. In other works, it is desired to secure sufiicient pressure between the upper and lower Walls of the sealing ring to firmly hold the cover in sealed contact with the container body, but at the same time, it is desirable that this turned under portion may be readily released from the container when.

This container is especially adapted for pacln'ng' dry material, such as olled oats or the like. It is understood that the cover end of the container is laced thereon and sealed the container. In effect, the cover is'at this a time the bottom of the container. The other end which is to be double-seamed is the container body is not yet applied. The container is put into a fillin machine and the material to be packed discharged into the container. In packing rolled oats, it is often desirable to pack them under pressure. They are pressed into the container until it isfu l to a point near the top of the container body,
which as. stated, is bottom side up during the packing of the material therein. After the material has been placed in the container,
the end is applied and attached to the container body by the ordinary double seam. The package is now complete. By having a flat top, which becomes the bottom of the container during filling, the pressure exerted upon thematerial will not bulge out the top as this fiat top is supported all the way across, or substantially so, during filling.
It will be noted that the friction wall of the cover tapers slightly toward the free edge of the friction wall. This revents the material which passes inside the riction wall during the filling of the container from crowding the friction wall outwardly into too. tight a grip upon the cpver.
The sealing ring is provlded with inwardly projecting breaking projections or tabs 15 and- 16 which lie against the outer face of the flat top and overlie at their inner ends an annular groove 17 which enables the projections to be readily lifted for breaking the sealing ring. The sealing ring is formed with slits 18 alongside of these breaking tabs. which extend substantially across the portion of the sealingring whiclnoverlics the top portion of the cover. \Vhen the ring is applied to the'con- 7 lll) the upper wall of the ring, and therefore, when the sealing ring is broken, the sections of the ring may be readily moved laterally and thus the ring removed from 'the container. Inasmuch as the breaking tab projects over the annular groove in the cover, the end of the tab may be readily raised, and the tab bent backward so as to rupture the metal at one side or the other thereof. The slit 18 may be a score or may be cut throu h the metal. If a score, then the metal will broken along this line. If not, then the tab is raised to a vertical position pre aratory to twisting the metal oflat one si e or the other, which extends down across the flanges 'and underneath the seating shoulder on the container body. After the tab has been broken at one side of the container, then one section of the sealing ring can be moved laterally away from the other as shown in- Fig 5, the two sections turning as a hinge about the metal connecting the same, opposite where the tab has. been broken. Both tabs may be raised and the metal broken, so that the two sections are entirely released, if desired. 'The essential feature is that this metal sealing ring when broken, can be moved laterally and disengaged from the cover and container body, without in any way distorting the parts [which are housed within the sealing ring in making a tight closure.
As above noted, the turning of the sealing ring underneath the seating flange or bead on the container body does not in an way distort or change the shape of the friction wall of the container body, by reason of the fact that the underneath portion of the sealing ring does not contact in any wa with the outer wall of the container bo Therefore, the friction cover may be nice y fittedto the container body and this nice fitting of these two parts is not disturbed in any way during the closing of the container.
In order to aid in making a tight seal, the.
sealing ring is lin d with pa er as shown at 19, or some other orm of gas eting material. The metal from which the sealing ring iscut is preferably lined with the material which is secured thereto by a suitable cement after which the ring is cut and applied to the container. This makes a layer of gasketing material between the under surface of the upper portion of the sealing rin and the outer surface of the cover, and a so a similar layer between the upper surface of the lower portion of the sealing ring and the lower portion of the seating flange. The pa er is more or less compressible, and this ena les the metal parts to be firmly gripped and a tight seal produced. Any lrregularities in the surface of the metal will be filled'by the paper. Then again,-the projecting tab which is lifted to break the sealing ring is likewise lined with paper, and therefore, it can be readily gripped and pulled upon to break the ring, the paper forming a friction hold for the grip of the one who is breaking the package. Instead of the paper lining, the breaking tab may be corrugated for the same purpose.
Fromthe above, it will be apparent that a sheet metal package has been rovided which may be sealed and which may e readi- 1y opened without requiring any tools whatever. At the same time, this metal package has no projecting parts which in any way in terfere with the placing of the packages side by side or one on top of another, or in the rolling of the package in applying a label thereto, if desired. Furthermore, when the seal is broken, this is done without in any way disturbing the cover on the container body, and therefore, the cover may be reapplied to the container body, and frictionally held thereon so that the container can be used for many purposes after it has once been emptied, or may be opened for remov-- ing a portion of the contents and reclosed.
Having thus described theinvention, what 90 we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is:
1. A sealed friction top sheet metal container comprising a body portion having an outwardly projecting seating flange, a flat top friction cover for said body portion extending over the seating flange and bent backwardly and thence downwardlyto form a portion adapted to rest on the seating flange and a portion to frictionally engage the inner wall of the body portion, a continuous integral sealing ring overlying the edge of the cover and having a portion adapted to be bent underneath the seatin flange so as to hold the cover in tight sealed engagement with said seating flange, said sealing rin having a breakin tab formed as a part t ereof whereby sai ring can be broken to release the cover from the container body, said seating flange on the container body being hollow, and said bent back portion of the cover being spaced from the top portion of thecover so as to give resiliency to" the parts housed within the sealing ring, and thus enable a tight seal to be formed.
2.
