EXPANDED-METAL LATH.

The present invention relates to improvements in expanding metal, and more particularly in methods for the manufacture of expanded metal rib lath. It will be fnlly understood from the following desription, illustrated by the drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the portlon of the blank shown m Fig. l1 after the mitial step of the process, the formation of certain of the intermediate ribs;

Fig. 5, is a plan view of the portion of the blank shown in Figs. 1 and 3, after the cutting or slitting operation;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the portion of the blank shown in Figs. 1, 3 ,and 5, after the formation of the remainmg intermedlate and the marginal ribs;

In carrying out the present invention, a flat blank of the desired width and length and of the desired gage of metal is initially formed with at least one intermediate rib, and preferably a plurality of r1bs or grooves 10 as shown in Fig. 3. These ribs may suitably be formed by passmg the flat blank of Fig. 1 through tongued and grooved rolls 11 and 12, or through other suitable dies. The ribs 10 are suitably formed at intermediate points in the width of the blank, and as illustrated, are preferably symmetrically disposed'with respect to the center line of the Sheet. After formation of the ribs 10, the sheet is subjected to a slittingor outting operation for the formation of the slits 13, which, in the metal illustrated, are in herringbone relation. In the slitting operation the' blank may be moved intermittently or continuously through the Cutting dies, as desired, the ribs 10 being used to guide the blank through the cutters. The slits 13 are suitably formed in the sheet in such manner as to provide intermediate stay portions 14; and selvage portions 15.
The slitted sheet is next passed through suitable dies, for example, rolls of the mat mg tongued and grooved type as shown at 11 and 1:2 in F ig. 4, for'the formation of ribsat the intermediate stay portions 14 and at the selvage portions 15. As shown in Fig. 7, alternating ribs are preferably oppositely grooved, certain. of the intermediate ribs, for example, ribs 10 and 16 being higher than the selvage or marginal ribs 15a formed by the selvage portions 15. It is preferred that the marginal ribs 15a be approximately one-half'the height of the intermediate ribs referred to.
After formation of the intermediate and marginal ribs, as shown in F igs. 6 and 7, lthe metal is expanded suitably by lateral expansion, assuming the fprm shown in F ig. 6, the mesh 17 (shown in enlarged scale in Fig. 9) being formed by the opening of the slits 13. The expanded lath is rigid and plaster-saving, particularly where adjacent sheets are over a ribs avoiding excessive thickness of lplaster and also avoiding protrusion of the lath through the plaster.

An expanded metal lath spaced longitudinal Sections of expanded metal and ribbed Stays between said expanded metal sections and at the margins of the sheets, the ribs at the margins of the sheets being lower than certain of the central ribs so that when the edges of two contiguous sheets overlap, the combined height of the overlapped sheets is less than the height of said central ribs.
