SIDE BEARING.

This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in anti-friction bearings, more especially adapted for use as slde hearings for railway cars, and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention as shown herein and in its preferred embodiment is a side bearing to be applied to the body bolster, as distinguished from the truck bolster, of a railway car and its novel'features of construction render its use of particular advantage when thus applied.
The object of the invention is to provlde a bearing of the kind of simple and economical construction, in which the anti-fr1ction roller, suspended from the casing, is supported and centered by a novel and mproved spring-controlled mechanism, which is efficient in operation, which is readily and easily assembled and in which replacements for wear or breakage may be quickly made.
The advantages of the invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings Figure l is a view representing a top plan of the bearing.
Figure 2 is a view representing a transverse section through the bearing in a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view representing a longitudinal central section through the bearing shown partially in side elevation.
Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings: 10 indicates a casing adapted to be secured to the bottom side of a body bolster 11 in any usual or familiar manner. As shown, the body bolster 11 is inclined at an angle to the horizontal and the base plate 12 of the casing has its top face correspondingly inclined at an angle to the horizontal (transversely of the casing) for attachment to said body bolster. Projecting ears or extensions 13, 13 at the ends of the base plate are provided with bolt holes for securing the casing to the bolster in the manner described.
The casing is preferably made hollow with a bottom wall 14 and with integral vertical side members 15, 15 and end members 16, 16. Said bottom wall 14 presents a bearing surface 17 on its bottom side against which an anti-friction roller 18 is designed to roll. The vertical side and end members 15 and 16project somewhat below the bearing way or surface 17the side walls 15 providing side ways 15*, 15- to guide the ends 19, 19 of the roller and the end walls 16 providing stops 1G, 16 which are curved substantially to the curvature of the cylindrical surface of the roller and merge into the bearing surface 17 on the bottom wall of the casing 20 indicates a Ubar the legs 20 20 of which embrace the sides of the casing and the bottom or base member 20 of which 1STOI1116Cl to provide a shaft which extends loosely through a central bearing aperture 19* in the anti-friction roller. Art either side of the casing and mid-way of the ends of the path of travel of the roller 13 are provided apertured flanges or ears 21, 21 which extend outwardly from the side ways 15 15 of the casing. Reinforcing ribs 22 connect the ends of said flanges or ears 21 to the side walls of the casing, said ribs being spaced on either side of the transverse median plane of the casing to provide room for the legs 20, 20 of the U-bar '20, which legs extend up through the apertures in the flanges or ears 21.
23, 23 indicate hollow blocks located in the apertures of the ears 21 and having flanges 24 which bear on the ears 21. The bottom surface of the flange 21 and the top surface of the ear 21 are formed to provide co-acting curved bearing surfaces 25 so that the block 23 is capable of a limited rocking movement on said flange. The curved hearing surface on the flange 21 is carried up by lugs 26 at the ends of said curved surface to provide stops which will retain the block 24 in its intended position.
The legs 20 of the U-bar extend through apertures in the bottoms of the blocks 24, as clearly shown in the drawings. 27, 27 indicate coiled expansion springs on the legs 20 of the U-bar 20; said springs are seated at their bottom ends in the hollow blocks 24: and are retained at their upper ends by washers 23 held on the top ends of the U-har legs 20 20' by pins '29.
The bolster 11 is provided with suitable apertures 11, 11 to receive the upper ends of the le s of the U-bar with their associated coiled springs. Said apertures are elongated in the direction of the length of the casing to permit a swinging movement of the U-bar in the operation of the bearing as will now.
draw the roller into contact with the wear or bearing surface 17 on the bottom wall 1% of the casing,thisbecause the coiledsprings 27, expanding between the blocks 24' (orthe ears 21 with which they areengaged) and'the washers 28 at the top ends of the U-bar 20, will act to force said bar upwardly at all times. lVhen the roller 18, by reason of its engagement against a bearing plate on the truck bolster, is caused to roll' along the bearing surface 17 towards one or the other end of the casing, this movement will act through the U-bar 20 and the washers 28 to compress the springs 27 in proportion to the distance the roller moves beyond normal middle position. The base member of the U' bar follows the roller in its movement, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 3, while its upper ends swing in the opposite direction, the U-bar as a whole bein pivoted by means of the blocks 24, to swing or rock on the cars 21'.
Upon the release of the roller by the bottom bearing plate, the expansion of the springs 27 will act to draw the U-bar up.-
wardly and at the same time to swing it on the ears 21 so as-to bring 11: back to vertlcal oosition with the roller centered as in the lieginning.
Itwill be manifest that in case of a'break or wear of any of the parts of the bearing, that said parts may be readily removed and replacedwithoutremoving the bearing as a whole; for example, to replace the coiled springs 27 either one or both of them, it is simply necessary toremove the pins 29 and the washers 28, whereupon the old springs may be removed and new springs applied. I
I claim as my invention:
1. In a side bearing, in combination with a bearing member presenting a bearing surface on one side and being constructed for attachment to a bolster on its other side, a transversely disposed roller engaged with saidbearing surface, a U-bar embracing the sides of said bearing member, said U-bar having a bottom member engaged with said roller, means providing a rocking engagement" between said U-bar and said bearing member on an axis extending parallel to but spacedabove the bottom member of said U- bar and expansion coiled springs on said iii-bar above said bearing engagement acting to draw said roller against said bearing surface.
