INVENTOR Laws JZ/de/son BY a gnaw Patented Jan. 3, 1928.
UNITED STATES LOUIS JUDELSON, OF YORK,'N. Y.
CLOTHES 'WRINGER.
Application filed February 24, 1926. Serial No. 90,259.
This invention relates to clothes wringers and more particularly is directed to im provements in safety devices therefor.
One object of the inventionis to provide a practical safety device of improved construction for a clothes wringer, said device serving to safeguard the operator from injury.
..Another object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character described which will prevent the feeding of an eircessive quantity of clothes to the wringer'rolls and thereby, prevent possible injury to the wringer mechanism.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide an improved device of the character described which is of simple and rugged construction, which shall be comparatively cheap to manufacture, easily applied to wringers of various makes, and practical and efficient to a high degree for the purposes described. 7 j
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. j
Certain features :herein shown and described are shown, described and claimed in my (Jo-pending application .#24,931, filed April 22, 1922 and accordingly are not claimed herein.
With the above exception the invention accordingly consistsin the features of con-' struction, combinations of elements and arrangement'of parts which will-be exemplified in the construction hereinafter .described and of which the-scope of applicae 'tion will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown oneof the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention. 7
'Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a 'wringer equipped with a safety guard embodying theinvention; j V
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on lines 2-2. in Fig.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the 7 improved guard showing the mounting vseen to consistof upright standards 11 fastened to asultable supporting base 12 and a cross member 13 normally secured'for movementbetween said'upright standards '11, as
shown in Fig. 2.
The standards 11 in each, of which is housed a pair of gears '(indicated in dotted lines at 15 and 16in Fig. 1). The lower gears 15 are mounted on a horizontal drive shaft 17 which turns in fixed bearings 18 in the standards ll.
The'shaft v17 may have at one end an extension 17. for coupling to a power drive of any suitable well known construction (not shown).
7 Supported above the shaft 17 is .an upper shaft 19 journalled in pairs of vertically moving bearing blocks 20 mounted over the bearings 18 in the standards 11.,
The shafts 17 and 19 carry the usual c0- acting rubber . rolls 21 and 22 respectively between whichthe material to be wrung is inserted. 'Thebearing blocks 20 are provided each with a tension spring 25, the up-' with the 'cross member13.
per endsof which are preferably engaged For tensioning the rollers 21 and 22, pressure is applied, in any wellknown suitable manner tothecrossbar, as by an adjusting screw -28, only -a fragmentary portion of which is shown in 1. I
"A safety'device embodying the invention I is mounted on the wringer 10 to prevent accidental insertion of the operators fingers between the rolls 21 and 22.and also to prevent the feeding of an excessive quantity of clothes ,to said rolls and thereby eliminate possible injury to the wringer.
I Said device comprises a .demountable' guard member 24 which may be supported by the wringer frame in any suitable manner, as in the bracketsor slides 23 secured to the front and rear sides of the gear casings 1 1 by rivets 25 or byother suitable fastening means. ,Said .member 241 may be made of any suitable material and is preferably molded to forma unitary structure comprising an elongated flat front side 24- having the ends thereof formed to extend rearwardly fromsaid-front side as at 2 1" iandhaving lugs 24Pprojecting outwardly from the ends of said member 24 for engaging in the brackets or slides 23.
From Figs. 1 and 2, it is seen that when carry gear casings 14 lUU tit)
.two wringer rolls.
the safety device is mounted in effective position, the front side 24: thereof extends across the wringer in spaced relation from the feeding side of the wringer rolls.
The front wall 2 1* has a slot 24 extending lengthwise thereof in alignment with the contacting surfaces of the wringer rolls. The upper and lower longitudinal rim portions of said slot are extended toward the.
rolls from said side to form the upper and lower flanged walls 30 and 30, respectively, of the funnel shaped passage 30. The lower wall 30 is preferably extended so as to bring the free edge portion 30 thereof adjacent the roller 21 below the line of contact of the disposed above said line of contact and made slightly narrower than said lower wall to allow for the adjusting of and the takeup wear of said rolls. a
It is thus seen that the passage 30 is positioncd with respect to the rolls so that the n'iaterial inserted in said passage will be guided 'for proper feeding through the wrmger. V
Thepassage 30 is preferably flared in the direction of the front side 24i so that-the wards the larger end thereof.
In using the invention, the safety device i 1 1 v, 1. 1s eetachably mounted in tne olaclrets or slides 23 on the feedingside of the wrlnger rolls, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. their the opposite side of the wringer rolls is used as the feeding side, the device is dcniounted and secured in thdposition shown in the .dotted lines. .he rolls are then rotated and the clothes fed through the wringcr through the passage 30.
The front side 24 and the 'iassagc 3O not only serve as a guard for the operators fingcrs, but alsoshield the rolls from accidental contact with injurious objects and eliminate the possibility of any undesirable ma terial entering between the rolls.
The den'iountable construction for connects ing the safety device to the wringer permits ready disassembling of the wringer for cleaning, adjusting or repairing.
It will thus be seen that there 1s provided a device in which the several objects of this invention. are achieved and which is well The upper wall 30 is adapted to meet the conditions of practical changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accoi'npanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a pair of wringer rolls arranged for vertical rolling contact, a safety device for said rolls, said device having a passage aligned with said rolls wherethroi'igh the clothes may be fed to the. rolls, one wall of the passage sloping upwardly toward the lower roll to extend adjacent. to and spaced so as to be just short for contacting with the lower roll below theline of contact of said rolls, and the other wall dis posed above said line of contact, as and for the purpose described andspecified:
2. In combination with a pair of wringer rolls arranged for rolling contact, a safety device-.for said rolls,'said device having a passage aligned with said rolls wheres through the clothes may be fed to the rolls, the walls of said passage'being flaredoutwardly with respect to said rolls, one of saicl' \valls sloping upwardly to extend ad jacent one of the rolls, and means to-detachably secure the device to the wringer.
- 3; In a device of the character described, in combination, a wringer having wringer rolls arranged for rolling contact,a safety device for said rolls, said devicehaving a passage aligned with said rolls wherethrough the clothes may be fed to the rolls,
one wall of said passage slopingupwardly to extend adjacent to and spaced soas to be just short of contacting one of the rolls below the line of contact, and the other wall disposed above saidline of contact, lugs extending from said device and slides for engaging said lugs to detachably secure said device to the wringer, as and for the pur pose described and specified. 7
4. A safety device for a wringer comprising a one-piece structure having a front wall member formed with aslot therein, the'rim portionof said slot being extended to form a flared passage having a wall projecting inwardly and upwardly from said front wall member tothe rollsof the'wringer, and lugs extending from the ends of said wallmemthe wringer. Y v V In testimony whereof I afiixfmy signautre.
