" BUILDING TILE.
a nuauoa'mea April 4, 1925. Serial no. 20km,
The present invention relates-to building tiles, and more particularly tobuilding tiles of the so-oalled double-shell type.
Building tiles are usually formed with 5 parallel side walls connected by a plurality of transverse webs extending at right angles to the side walls and forming therewith square cells. All square cell tiles when laid on the side, have a tendency to collapse when the clay is unburned, andeven when burned. Moreover, such tiles are fra 'le to manufacture and the breakage in' shlpping is very great. I
While the present invention, in its broader aspect, is applicable to square cell tiles generally, it is particularly directed to overcoming the above objectionable features in the so-called double shell tiles. In the drawings 3 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double shell tile embodying a preferredform of my Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the tile shown in Figure 1. v 1
Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the tile comprises arallel cellular sidewalls, each of set side walls embodying closely git-udinallyextending shells or webs 2 and 3 spaced apart by transverse connecting webs 4, thus forming double shell side walls, which are continuous or "uninterrupted throughout their length and width except for the usual mortar retaining ribs. The side walls are connected adjacent the ends of the tile by transverse webs 5 extendin at right angles to the "side walls. Hereto ore, it'has been customary to also connect the side walls by intermediate transverse webs in parallel to the end webs 5. As already stated, this construction was liable to collapsein the greenstate and even after burning, since the transverse webs ofiered little resistance to relative longitudinal movement between the walls -when the tile was laid on its side when being handled or shipped. Moreover, the tile so constructed.
wasfragile and therefore liable to be easil'y broken. r
m .1 overcome ing appreciably to either these difiiculties without addthe weight or the cost of the tile by substituting for the usual 8 webs connecting opposite intermediate web 6,.two V- haped web the tile to break when subjected to the s spaced parallel lon-o having their vertices'directed towards each other and connected by a short longitudinally extending web 9. These webs 8 and 9 form, n effect, two oppositely inclined diagonal webs which cross each other and are integrally connected by the common web portion 9, thereby forming an approximately X-shaped web connecting the cellular 'ro NATIONAL man rnoor side walls of the tile adjacent its center and bracing the .side walls of the 'tile against relative longitudinal movement in either direction. The V-shaped webs 8 brace each other through the connecting web portion 9.
whereby there is no tendency of these webs to collapse due to the load on the tile.
I have shown the tile providedwith short .interior diagonal webs 10 at the corners ,of
the tile connecting the end webs 5 with the cellular side walls. These webs may be omitted, if desired,- thereby reducing the weight of, the tile, but they havea useful function in addition -'to bracing the tile, namely, to secure the sidewalls firmly to the end webs 5 where there is a tendency for earing eiiect of unequal expansion when exposed to fire. I The tile can be broken into two half sections on the line a-a of Figu line b'-b of Figure 2 to get a two-t 'rds piece.
will be understood that the invention is not the scope of the appended claimswithoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: e
, 1. A tile having parallel .side walls and transverse vertical webs connectin the parall el side walls, trally located between the walls and diagonal webs connecting opposite ends of the short web with the side walls intermediate the ends thereof and at a substantial the vertical web's.
2. A tile havingparallel sidewalls and transverse vertical websconnectin the parallel side walls, a "short longitu inal web centrally located between the walls, diagonal v re. 2, which bisects the web 9, or can be broken alonthe While I have shown and described the ,preferred embodiment of my invention it a short longitudina web cen-.
distance from endsof the short web with the side walls intermediate the ends thereof, and diagonal webs in the cor-:- ners of the tiles connecting the side walls and the vertical webs.
3. A tile having parallel side walls which, are double, with webs to hold the double walls apart, transverse end walls connectin thep arallel sidewalls, a short longitudina web centrally located between the side walls, and diagonal webs connecting opposite ends of the longitudinal web with the double side walls intermediate theends thereof and at a substantial di'stancefrom the end walls.
4. .A tile having parallel double uninterrupted side walls, transverse'end walls coni used with the openings therethrough vertis cal, having vertical side walls which are connected adjacent their ends by transverse vertical end walls, and oppositely directed diagonal bracing webs connecting the vertical side walls intermediate their length and adapted to be at at-substantial distance from the ends of the, tile, said diagonal webs joining each other at approximately the center of the I block.
7. A hollow building meada aa to be used with the openings therethrough vertical, having vertical side walls which are connected adjacenttheir ends by transverse verticalend walls, and oppositely directed diagonal bracing webs connecting the vertical sidewalls intermediate their ends, said diagonal webs joining each other at approximately the center of the block, the side walls being substantially thicker than the other walls and webs of the block. I 8. A tile havinglparallel side'walls an transverse vertical end webs connecting the side walls, from the ends of thetile so as to provide an external channel at each end thereof, the
end webs being connected to the side walls through diagonal branches, whereby sup; portis provided for the projecting end portions of the sidewalls, a short longitudinally extending web centrally located between the walls, and diagonalwebs connecting opposite ends of the'shert web with the r ective side walls intermediate the end webs of the tile.
said end webs being set inwardly In testi mo'ny whereof I have hereunto set I my hand.
