The present invention relates-to building tiles, and more particularly tobuilding tiles of the so-oalled double-shell type.
Building tiles are usually formed with 5 parallel side walls connected by a plurality of transverse webs extending at right angles to the side walls and forming therewith square cells. All square cell tiles when laid on the side, have a tendency to collapse when the clay is unburned, andeven when burned. Moreover, such tiles are fra 'le to manufacture and the breakage in' shlpping is very great. I
While the present invention, in its broader aspect, is applicable to square cell tiles generally, it is particularly directed to overcoming the above objectionable features in the so-called double shell tiles. Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the tile comprises arallel cellular sidewalls, each of set side walls embodying closely git-udinallyextending shells or webs 2 and 3 spaced apart by transverse connecting webs 4, thus forming double shell side walls, which are continuous or "uninterrupted throughout their length and width except for the usual mortar retaining ribs. The side walls are connected adjacent the ends of the tile by transverse webs 5 extendin at right angles to the "side walls. Hereto ore, it'has been customary to also connect the side walls by intermediate transverse webs in parallel to the end webs 5. As already stated, this construction was liable to collapsein the greenstate and even after burning, since the transverse webs ofiered little resistance to relative longitudinal movement between the walls -when the tile was laid on its side when being handled or shipped.
