MACHINE FOR TRIMMING TENPINS.

This invention relates to a machine for cleaning, polishing and truing bowling pins, the general object ot the invention being to )rovide means for rotating a pin-directly trom a motor, with a combined centering and clipping tool carried by the tail stock,

Another object of the invention is to make the tool holder slidable on the torni or guiding means, carried bythe ranhso that the tool will be brought into Contact with the lower part of the body and the bottom end ot the pin.

In these views, 1 indicates the base of the machine which supports atV one end a motor 42.aud at its'other end the stand 3 for the tail stock ram 4 which is slidably lmounted in the guideways 5 horizontally arranged in the top of the stand. This ram is reciprocated by means ot the hand lever 6 which handle 11'by which it may be turned.
The'front end of the ram carries a Centering pin 12 and a cutting tool 13 which is so shaped as to engage the cup-shaped 'recess in the bottom oi' the pin A Vwhile the pin 12 is Vengaging the center hole of said pin. A bumper or stop plate 14 is adjustably connected with this end off the ram by the bolts 15 vengaging threaded holes in the ram and passingV through Vslots 15 formed in the plate.` This plate will engage the end of the pin A and thus prevent further movement of the ram. A form or guiding arm 16 is connectedwith the forward end of the ram at one side thereof and this arm comprises a curved orwardlyfextending part 16 and a straight portion/16 which is provided' with an extension 16". `The outer edge ot gaged with the tongue ot the arm by push,- ing it over the tongue ot veither the part 16' 'or the extension 16".
' The holder has a handle 2O at'one end and a plate 21 fastened to the hotly by a bolt (itl engage the body of' the pin and the bottom end thereon Figure 2 showing the tool cn-` gaging the bottom in tull lines and the body in dotted lines. By adjusting the stop plate 14 on the ram7 the amount ot material moved from the pin by the tool can be controlled. Of course, the arm 1 6 is so formed that the tool will be so positioned that it Will true the body and the bottom of a pin and clean and polish the same. A leg is fastened to the outer end of the arm 16 to support the same from the base.
The means 'for supporti the top end of' the pin rotatably connecting it with the motor comprises a clutch device which consists oit a metal cup 2G which has its necl fastened to the vshaft olf the motor2 and a cup-shaped member 27 'torni-ed of rubber or the like 'which is held in the cup 26 by the screw 29. ylhis block 28 is provided with a semi-spherical socket 30 andthe inner Wall of the resilient cup 27 is formed with an annular shallow groove 31. rlhis resilient cup Will act, to pull the top end of the pin A into the clutch until its end engages the socket 30 and thusr properly position the pin and cause it to rotate on its axis.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that apin can be easily placed in the device by drawing the ram 4i to the rear by the lever G so that a pin can have its head placed in the clutch and then the ram is moved 'forwardly until. its pin 12 engages the hole in the bottom of the pin. The stop plate 14: is then adjusted to space the ram and the arm 16 a su'llicient distance from the pin so that the tools 13 and 24: Will eng-age the pin to out therefrom a suiiicient amount of material to clean and polish the same and to true the pin. The tool holder 19 is moved over the part 16 to true the body ot the pin and then it is pushed over the extension on tov the part 16 to true the bottom ot the pin. The tool 13 will cut the Wllso't the recess in the bottom of the pin.
. This tool will bring a pin to its original standard diameters ot both the body and base and the lp'n can be operated on again and again until its height is reduced beyond the height called :tor by the regula' tions. v
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages andY novel features of my invention Will be readily apparent.

A machine fortrimming bowling pins comprising a base, a motor supported at one end of t-he base, a` stand supported at the other end of the base and having a guideway in its top, a ram slidably mounted in the guideway, a lever for Amoving the vram, means for locking the ram in adjusted position, a guiding arm connected with `the forward end of the ram, and includinga straight portion which is connected with the ram and a curved forwardly extending portion, a tool holder adapted to be moved over each portion of thev arm, a tool carried by the holder, a centering pin at the front end of the ram, a curved cutter associated with the pin, a stop plate connected with the ram and 'adapted to engage a bowling pin being operated upon by rthe machine to limit theforward movement of the ram and a resilient holder for one end of a bowling pin connected with the motor shaft, the other end of the bowling pin having a hole therein for receiving the centering pin.

In a pin trimming machine, a `driven shaft, work engaging means connected therewith, supporting means, aV slidable element carried by the supporting means, work centering means controlled bythe slidable element, and tool mounting means positioned simultaneously with the movement of the slidable element and including members for supporting the tool for movement along the side of the work and transversely of the longitudinal axis thereof.
8. In a pin trimming machine, a driven' shaft, work engaging means connected therewith, supporting means,v a slidable element carried by the supporting means, work centering means controlled by the slidable element, and tool mounting means positioned simultaneously with the movement of the slidable element and including members for supporting the tool for movement along the side of the work and transversely of the longitudinal axis thereof, and means for retaining the tool mounting means in an adjusted position.

In a. pin trimming and polishing machine, work engaging means, means for rotating same, a slidably mounted element, operating means therefor, mounting means positioned simultaneously with the movement of the slidablc element andincluding portions for supporting a tool for movementv along the sides of the work and transversely of the main axis thereof.

In a machine for trimming bowling pins,fthe combination of a head chuck for gripping the head of the pin, a. motorfor rotating the head and pin, a stationary tailstock, a member carried by said tailstock and movable with relation thereto and a tool guide movable with said member into a predetermined position.`
