My invention relates to improvements in one tip chalkers, and the object of the invention is to devise a simple device for holding chalk for chalking cue tips so that it will always be easily gotten at, in which there will be no danger of the holding string wearing out, in which the breaking of the pins holding the string is eliminated, in which sutficient holding string may be contained so that there will be no danger of the string being broken or the pins loosened by the jerking of the user upon the string during the operation of chalking, and in which means is provided whereby the winding mechanism can only be operated by the pro prietor, and therefore cannot be tampered with by any other person, and it consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly explained.
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of my device.
Fig. Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2 on line 3-3 looking in the direction of arrow.
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation looking in the direction of arrow Figure 2 from the line 44.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 indicates a cylindrical casing provided with heads 2 and 3 which are connected together by cross-bolts 4.
5 is a bracket by which the holder may be secured in position either beneath the 2 is a cross sectional View through billiard table or in any other suitable position. The casing 1 is provided. with a circumferential slot 1 of sufficient width to permit the passage of a hand therethrough, the edges of which are turned inward, as indicated at 2*, so as to present a smooth edge to contact with the holding string of the chalk holder.
6 is a stud shaft upon which is mounted a drum 7 upon which is wound a holding string 8, being secured at one end to the central core of the drum. The drum 7 is so positioned that the centre sleeve thereof is slightly belowthe lower peripheral portion of the forward edge of the slot 1 so as to permit the free passage of the cord or string 8 horizontally forward without triotio'nally engaging the slot edge and thus become worn.
9 is a chalk container of the type commonly employed in which the chalk 10 is secured.
11 is a pinion mounted upon the stud 6 and formed integral with the drum 7.
12 is an arbor ext-ending through the head 2 of the main casing and provided at its outer end with a squared portion 12.
13 is a supplemental frame secured within the main frame preferably to the head 2,
and in which is journalled the arbor 12. v
14 is a helical spring seoured'at one end to the arbor 12 and at the opposite end to an enclosing cylindrical casing 15.
16 are teeth or pins extending outward from one faceof the casing 15, and with which a dog 17 engages to prevent the rotation of the casing in the direction of the pull of the spring.
18 is a gear wheel secured to'the arbor 12,
and in mesh with the pinion 11.
19 is a key provided with an internal portion 19 with which the squared portion 12 of the arbor engages. The key 19 may be readily attached at any time by the proprietor on the operating end of the arbor 12, and the spring wound to the required tension, being held in its wound position by the dog 17. When it is desired to chalk a one, all that it is necessary to do is to pull the chalk retainer outward from the casing 1 to any extent desired, chalk the one tip and then release the retainer so that the spring 14 rotates the drum in a contrary direction to rewind the string 8 thereonto.
From this description it will be seen that I have devised a very simple device which will absolutely eliminate any danger of the holding string being worn'out during its operation, which will have a large string holding capacity, and therefore there will be no danger of the string running short and. the holder being strained by the user of the chalk holder jerking upon the string, and which at the same time will eliminate any danger of the spring being broken or the spring being loosened from a similar cause, and in which the mechanism will be entirely under the control of the proprietor so that it cannot be tampered with by any other person.
What I claim as my invention is:
A one tip chalker comprising a cylindrical easing having a peripheral slotted opening in 1ts lower portlon, the ends of the slot extending in horizontal alignment and of sulfieient width to permit the passage of the operators hand, a shaft journalled in the ca s-- ing a drum mounted on the shaft so that y the lower peripheral portion of its centre holder secured to the free end of the cord, a supplemental shaft geared to-the' aforesaid shaft, a spring drive to such supplemental shaft, a ratchet wheel carried by the supplemental shaft, a dog coaeting therewith, and 15 a key member adapted to be detaehably con neoted to the external end of the supplemental shaft.
