R. E. MITTON CYLINDER AIR COMPRESSOR Filed April 7, 192a Patented Dec. 27, 1927.
UNITED STATES insane ROBERT E. MITTON, Oll SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
CYLINDER AIR COMPRESSOR.
Application filed April 7, 1926. Serial No. 100,350.
My invention relates to compressors and has for its object to provide a cylinder compressor in which clean air may be compressed into any tank by the action ofthe 5 explosion of the gas in the internal combustion engine. A further object is to provide an air compressor in connection with the internal combustion motor or engine in which the compression and explosion of W gases form a power for operating the compressor.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part 01": this application, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings in which I have shown the best and most preferred method of building my device, Figure 1 is a diametrical vertical section of my device in place on an internal combustion engine, with parts shown inelevation. Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
In the drawings I have shown a cylinder of the internal combustion engine as A, in which the piston B is operated by the 8X plosion of gases. I provide a tubular casing C, bent at right angles to the opening in the internal combustion engine A, having its free end externally threaded to receive a, cylindrical casing D. An annular spring-holding casing 1 is provided on one.
end of said casing D to hold the spring 2 in position. Circumferential ribs 3 are provided around-the said casing D to keep the device from overheating. The opposite end oi the casing D is internally threadedat 4, and the plug 5 is screwed therein, having an annular cut 7 on its periphery, forming a spring-retaining space 8 between the internal wall of the casing D and the cut 7, in which aspring 9 is operatively carried. A chamfered hole 10 is provided in said plug 5 to form a seat for the ball valve 6, and the ball valve 6 is retained in said hole 10 by the plug 11, which is screwed into the threaded portion 4 of the casing D. Said plug 11 has ports 12 cut therethrough to allow passage of air. Another plug 13 is screwed into the extreme end of the internally threaded portion 1 of the casing D, and is centrally bored to allow passage of air therefrom. hose connection 1 1 is provided centrally on the outer face of said plug 13., to which a hosemay be attached to carrythe compressed air to the storage tank. A piston E is operatively carried within said casing D, and is suitably packed to prevent loss of compression or leakage of air around it. Ports 15 are cut in the side walls of the casing D to allow intake of air.
The operation of my device is as follows With the tubing C screwed into the head of the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, and the engine is operated, the explosion of gases will move the piston E longitudinally in the said casing D, forcing the air contained in the chamber 16 through the chami ered seat 10, and the plugs 11 and 13, to the desired storage tank. The intake of gases caused by the suction in the cylin der A with the aid of the spring 9 will return the cylinder E to the opposite end of the casing D, and air will enter through the ports 15. With the next explosion of gas in the cylinder A, the piston E will again force the air taken in through the ports 15 into the tank or other desired parts of the vehicle, and so on until the engine is stopped. The springs 2 and 9 keep the piston E from jamming or battering against the ends of the casing D and from making any noise.
Having thus described my invention I de sire to secure by Letters Patent and claim e In a compressor the combination of a cylindrical casing; annular ribs formed on the outer face thereof; a tubular casing secured in one cud thereof and having the other end threaded to be secured in the head of an internal combustion engine cylinder; an annular recess formed in one end of said casing adapted to hold a spring; a plug screwed into the other end having its outer edge formed to make a similar annular re cess in the other end of said casing; a spring carried in each recess; a valve seat chain A cylindrically threaded fered in said plug; air intake ports in the side Walls of said cylinder casing; 21 ball valve carried in said seat and adapted to close said seat by back pressure of air; another plug having ports theretl1rough screwedinto said casingbackLOfsaid first mentioned plug; another plug screwed into the extreme end of said casing having a threaded end thereof; and a operable 111 sald casmg.
In testi slglmture.
