The present invention relates to improvements in bearers for printing presses of the bed and cylinder type.
The invention is particularly concerned with improved means for securing the bearer to the press bed in such a manner that the bearer will offer a uniform wearing surface over which the cylinder travels.
It is customary to attach the bearers by inserting a number of screws through openings in the tops of the bearers. I have discovered that the edges of these screw holes become very rapidly worn down, and that the bearers frequently break or crack transversely at the points where they are weale ened by the provision of the screw holes.
In order to overcome this difficulty, I em-' ploy ameans for fastening the bearer which does not pass through its upper surface, and which will leave no screw hole openings in the faceof the bearer over which the cylinder travels.
By virtue of my improved attaching means, I also render it possible to raise the bearers and insert packing therebenea'th whenever. occasion requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a bearer which may be rapidly installed or removed, which will be of simple, practical construction, which will be rugged,
durable and highly eflicient in use,and which may be manufactured wlth comparative economy.
/Vith the above noted and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will bemore fully hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. ,From the foregoing description it will be evident that I have provided a bearer of much inorerugged construction than the conventional. type. By eliminating "the screw holes in the upper face of the bearer, I prevent excessive wear atthe edges of the holes where the cylinder travels over the bearer face. I also eliminate the tendency of the bearers to break at the points where they areheld by their securing devices. Each type form lock includes a flat clamping plate 18 carried at one end of a screw 17 working in atransverse threaded bore in the bearer. The ends of the screws areswivelly connected to the plates 18 as at 17*, and

The bearer which embodies both my improved type form clamping means, and the improved securing means which forms the subject matter of the present invention, will i be of course highly eiiiclent from every angle,
but it is tobe understood that the present invention is applicable to all bearers regardless of whether or not they embody any type form clamping means.
Various changes and alterations,might be made inthe general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from a the invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the details set for h, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterationsas fairly fallwithin the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
