J. BROGER APPARATUS FOR COOLING METAL VAPOR RECTIFIERS Filed March 28. 1921 Patented Dec. 20, 1927.
UNITED STATES xraur OFFICE.
JOHANN BROGER, 0F BADEN, SWITZERLAND, ASSIGNOB T0. AK'IIENGESELIISCHAI'I BROWN, BOVERI 6t COMPANY, OF BADEN, SWITZERLAND.
APPARATUS FOR COOLING METAL-VAPOR BECTIFIEBS.
Application filed March 28, 1921, Serial No.
One of the chief requirements for the proper working of a metal vapor rectifier is a good cooling.
By the use merely of the ordinary cooling jacket around the vacuum chamber of the rectifier it is not possible to convey the heat away from the difiicultly accessible parts situated in the interiorof the rectifier.
In metal vapor rectifiers for large outputs, the anodes are provided each with a cooler for the purpose of conveying away effectively the heat generated at the anodes. It is thus obvious that the construction of a rectifier which comprises say six, anodes, and
where each anode is furnished with a cooler,
will be complicated and very costly.
The present invention not only. allows of dispensing with the connection of a cooler to each anode, but also it provides a means of conveying away the heat from the diflicultly accessible places in the interior of the working chamber.
According to this inventon the construction is so arranged that a cooling medium, such as air, water, etc., is causedto flow directly over portions of the walls of thecasing or shields in which the anodes are 10- rated, and thereby the areas about the anodes subjected to cooling influence. This may be effected for instance as illustrated in the embodiment illustrated in Fig; 1 of the accompanying drawings in whic there is provided a common supporting plate a for Supporting anodes a" and enveloping shields b for the anodes, the platea being spaced from the vacuum rectifier while the anode shields 2) project in an air tight manner into the vacuum chamber 0 being partially enveloped by the space d between the cover 7 and the chamber 0 so that a cooling medium such as air or water may be passed through said space and in direct contact with the outer surface of said shield I) over a part of its length. The cooling space is enlarged by the provision of a second shield e suspended in an air tight manner from an opening in the cover f of the chamber 0 and sealed at its lower end to the outer surface of the first mentioned anode shield b by means of the annular sealing member g. In other words by the provision of the shielde a cylindrical cooling space is provided about the major portion of the anode shield b which commuchamber 0 of the,

so that in the said free space the cooling medium can flow over the shields b of the anodes a and can convey away the heat conducted from the. chamber 0' by the shields.
What I claim is 1. An apparatus for cooling a metal vapor rectifier including in combination a supporting plateya metallic vacuum chamber spaced therefrom, an anode extending through the supporting plate, a shield sur-. rounding the anode and projecting from the supporting plate in an air tight manner into the vacuum chamber so that a cooling medium may be passed through the space between the plate and the chamber and in direct contact with the outer surface of said shield over part of its length.
2. An apparatus for cooling a metal vapor rectifier including in combination a supporting plate, a meta ic vacuum chamber spaced therefrom, an anode arranged through the supporting plate, a shield surrounding the anode and' projecting in an air tight manner into the chamber, a second shield projecting in an air tight manner. into the vacuum chamber and surrounding in spaced relation the first shield and connected in an air tight manner at the end projecting into'the chamber to the adjacent end of the first shield forming a cooling chamber which coacts with the space between the supporting plate and the vacuum chamber so that a cooling medium may be passed therethrough and about the first shield.
3. In vapor rectifying apparatus, a casing, an electrode, a supportlng member for said electrode disposed exteriorally of and spaced from a wall of said casing and providing therewith a ventilating passage, and a heatconductive shield disposed about said elec trode and sealed with respect to and travers ing the space between said member and said wall, one end of said shield being open with reapect to the interior of said casing to provi e communication between the same and said electrode.
to said electrodes 4. In va or rectifying apparatus, a casing, an electro e, a supporting member for said electrode disposed exteriorally of and spaced from awall of said casing and providing therewith a ventilating passage, a heat-com ductive shield disposed about said electrode and sealed with respect to and traversing the space between said member and said wall, one end of said shield being open with respect to the interior of said casing to provide communication between the same and said electrode, and means associated and cooperating with said shield to provide acooling passage adjacent to and exterior of the latter andcommunicating with said firstnamed passage and being closed with respect to the interior of said casing.
5. In vapor rectifying apparatus, a vertically disposed casing having a substantially fiat cover plate provided with circumferentially arranged openings, electrodes associated with said casing at said openings, :1 substantially flat supporting plate common disposed above and in spaced substantially parallel relation with respect to said cover plate to provide therewith a ventilating passage, and heat-conductive shield means disposed about said electrodes and extending, downwardly through said openings into said casing and being sealed with respect to said plates, the portions of said shield means interior of said casing being open with respect to the latter to provide communication between the same and said electrodes.
6. In vapor rectifying apparatus, a Vertically disposed casing having a substantially fiat cover plate provided with circumferentially arranged openings, electrodes associated with said casing at said openings, a substantially fiat supporting plate common to said electrodes disposed above and in spaced substantially parallel relation with respect to said cover plate vto provide therewith a Ventilating passage, heat-conductive shield means disposed about said electrodes and ex tending downwardly through said openings into said casing and being sealed with re' spect to said plates, the portions of said shield means interior of said casing being open with respect to the latter to provide communication between the same and said electrodes, and means providing said interior eating by way of said openings with said first-named passage and being closed with respect to the interior of said casing.
In testimony whereof I have Signedmy name to this specification. J OHANN BROGER.
