It is another object of the inventionV to provide a pivot hinge construction which is equally adaptable to application and use 1n connection with either right or left hand doors without involving any relative adjustment or rearrangement of theparts.
In one practical embodiment of the invention I provide a stationary pivotfpost mountp ed upon the sill of the door frame and spaced parallel plates lined to the lower edge of the door and` having a bearing upon saidrpost. Between these plates I arrange a spring pressed roller and provide guide flanges therefor on the opposite edges of the plates. This roller coacts with cam means formed on the pivot post whereby the spring is, placed under tension in the swinging movement of the door to or from its open or closed position. In addition, I propose to provide the pivot post with suitable seats or'cavities to receive said roller whereby the door will be held in open or closed position but will read-V ily yield to a positively applied pressure. y
`With the above and other objects in View my invention consists in the improved 'pivot hinge and in the form, construction and rela.- livearrangement of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illus- (rated in the accompanying drawings and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims. l l

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention I have shown only so much of the door structure as is necessary to disclose the manner of application ofy my present improvement. lIt will be understood as the description proceeds that the device is applicable to many different types of swinging ldoors or gates, such as are used between dif- Y i ferent sections or divisions of a large office, at the entrances to certain commercial establishments, and in numerous other instances.
As herein shown, one of the vertical side bars of the door frame is indicated at 5 and the base or sill barat 6. To the upper surface of Vthis sill bar at one end thereof ydepending upon whether the door is mounted in the right or left hand side of the door frame, a metal plate Tis fixed having a centra-l cupped or dished portion 8, the concave face of which is opposed to the bar 6. This dished part of theplate is'provided with a central rectangular opening 9 to receive the square or rectangular lower end 11 of the stationary pivot. post` 10. The upper end portion of this post is diametrically enlarged as at 12 to provide an annular shoulder 18 thereon. This enlarged section of the post is formed with spaced cam projections 14, the
cam surfaces 15 thereof merging into a depression or cavity` 16 at one side of the post. At the opposite or outer end of each cam face 15, the` projection 14 is formed with a cavity or seat 17, the purpose of which will be presentlyexplained. The lower edge of the door 20 is recessed or cut away as at`21 to receive the plates 22 and 23 and the parts arranged therebetween. One end of the plate 22 is bent to provide a relatively long angular extension 2a which is adapted to be securely fixed to the vertical edge v'face et the door by the the two plates 22 and 23 are rigidly united to each other to provide parallel portions extending longitudinally within the recess 21 of the door, These parallel portions of the two plates are provided on their oppo site longitudinal edgeswith guide lianges 30.
At one endet the flanges and adjacent to the upwardly .extending end portion 24 ot the plate 22, the latter' plate is termed with an opening surrounded by an upwardly projecting boss 31. Through this opening the lower cylindrical portion of the pivot post 10 extends, said boss seating at its upper edge against the shoulder 13 on said post.
AThe plate 23 is likewise provided with an opening 31 to receive the stud 19 on the upHV per end of the pivot post, said opening being surrounded by an annular flange 32 with which the anti-trietion bearing balls 33 disposed in the race way 18 are engaged.
Between the parallel arms of a yoke a roller 35 is loosely mounted upon a pin 36 connecting the yoke arms. On the end-s of this pin exteriorly of t-he yoke additional rollers 37 are loosely engaged and travel between the guide llanges 30 ol the , respective plates 22 and 23. The intermediate portion of the yoke 34 is provided with an opening 38 through which one end of a flat rod or bar 39 extends, said end oit the bar being angularly bent between the yoke arms and permanently .fixed to one ot' -said arms as at 40. This end ot the bar 39 is reduced in width providing shoulders 41 thereon which abut against the intermediate portion of the yoke at opposite sides ol the opening 38 therein. The other end ot the bar 39 is also reduced in width and is loosely engaged through an opening 42 in the upwardly ex` tending end portion 2G ot the bar it coil spring 43 surroundsI said bar and bears at one ol its ends against the end 26 ot.' the bar 22land at its other endagainst the intermediate portion of the yoke 34, said Ispring acting to yieldingly urge the yoke 'and the roller 35 mounted therein towards the cam projections 14 on the pivot post 10.
In the operation of the device above doscribed, when the gate er door is in closed position as seen in liull lines in Figure 2 of the drawings the roller is in opposed rela-- tion to the depression or seat 16 between the cam faces 15 and is yieldingly held by the spring 43 in hearing engagement against the opposite sides of this depression or seat. Thus the door is held against accidental or unintentional swinging movement. I-Iowever, upon theV application of pressure against one side oi the door, it may be readily swung ineither direction to an open position as seen in dotted lines in Figure 2. In the movement of the door to this position, the roller 35 riding over one or the other ot the cam faces 15 is moved laterally with the yoke 84, thereby additionallytensioning the spring 43 which serves at all times 'to maintain closeV bearing Contact ot the roller withr the cam face. lVhen the door arrives at its full open position substantially at right angles to the closed position thereof, the roller 35 is forced under the action of the spring 43 into engagement with the cavity or seat 17 at the end ot the Cam face. Thus it will be clear that the door is also yieldingly retained in this open position against accidental or unintentional swinging movement to a closed position.
In order to protect the several .parts ol' the device, I provide sheet metal cover plates 44 which are adapted to be secured .to opposite sides of the door over the recess 21 therein. vEach cover plate is provided on one end with an angular flange 45 to extend over the end edge of the' door and also has a slot 0r opening 46 through which the bearing 33 ttor the door structure may be conveniently lubricated. In addition, each plate 44 adjacent its opposite ends is provided with vertically spaced screw receiving' openings 47. yThese spaced openings permit the plates to be readily applied either to right or lett hand doors, but at the end ot the plate adjacent the pivot post only` one screw is inserted through the upper opening 47. These plates provide complete protection for the several operating parts o'li the device against accumulations of grit or dirt which might possibly interfere with their functional operation.
F rom the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of operation of my present invention will be readily understood, It will. ot course, be obvious that there is also provided a suitable pivot connection with the ripper end of the door which operates to preventvertical movement of the door and possible detachment of the pivot post 10 trom its mounting `in the plate 7. Itwill be seen that this pla-te holds the pivot post stationary and immovable in the turning or swinging movement of the door and also enables theide vice to be readily applied without alteration to either right or left hand doors. The improved mounting and arrangement of the sliding yoke and roller with the guide means therefor insures a minimum of frictional resistance and the easy and free operating movement Of las the parts. Also, .in view ot the simple Yforni and construction ot the several elementsand their if'ery compact arrangement, relative displacement thereoic necessitating more or less frequent repair, is obviat'ed.
While I have herein shown and described an embodiment ot my presentimprovements which has been found very satisfactory in practical operation, it is nevertheless to be understood that the device might also be produced in various other alternative constructions and I `accordingly reservethe privilege ot' resorting to all such legitimate changes in the forni, construction and relative arrangement ot the several parts as may be lfairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
l. A pivot hinge for doors and the like including a stationary pivot post having spaced cam projections, rigidly connected parallel plates adapted to be mounted in the door structure, each of said plates having parallel guide flanges, al spring pressed yoke positioned between said plates, a roller pivotally mounted in said yoke between the guide flanges on the opposite plates and yieldingly urged into bearing engagement against the cam projections of the pivot post, antitriction rollers mounted upon the ends of the roller axis and engaged between said guide flanges, said cam projections having seats to receive said roller and yieldingly resist the swinging movement of the door troni its open or closed position. i
2. A pivot hinge for doors and the like,
including a stationary vpivot post having spaced cam projections; a spring pressed yoke: a roller mounted in said yoke and yieldingly urged into bearing engagement against the cam projections of the pivot post; guide rollers for the yoke roller: rigidly connected parallel plates adapted to be mounted in the door structure, each of those plates having parallel guide iianges adapted to embrace the said guide rollers.

In a pivot hinge for doors and the like having a pivot post: a sill plate secured upon the sill of the door frame, with a central cupped portion and a rectangular holo init: a lower hinge-case-forming plate, lined at the door and having an opening with an upwardly erdeudcd ring flange adapted to support the lower part ot' the pivot post: an upper hinge-case-l'orining plate, iixcd at the door and having an opening with a downwardly extended ring lange, adapted to guide'the upper end stud of the pivot post and to act at the same time as the upper race of the door supporting ball bearing: said pivot post being provided at its lower part with a neck,-whieh is guided in the ring` lange or" the opening of the said lower plate, and being provided further at its lower end with a rectangular stud to it into the rectangular hole of the sill plate, and at its upper end with a cylindrical stud to lit into the ring iiange of the opening ot the said upper plate, and at its middle part with lateral cain .forming projections, adapted to operateV the door swinging means, and at yits upper part with a door supporting ball bearing: door swinging means arranged vbctween the aforesaid two plates, said means including a spring pressed 'roller adapted to roll on :the said cam-forming projections ot thepivot-post, and to exert thereby a lateral door-closing pressure on the aforesaid plates. y

5. A pivot hinge for doors and the like, including a stationary pivot post having spaced cam projections, a spring pressed plunger clement, a roller adapted to be pressed thereby into bearing engagement with the pivot-post, guide means mounted axially above and below said roller, rigidly connected parallel plates, adapted to be mounted in the door structure, each of said plates having parallel guide ianges adapted to embrace said guide means.

In a pivot hinge for doorsran'd the like, a swinging frame, a spring pressed plunger carried by .said frame, and a stationary pivot-post for said frame, a sheet metal sill plate adapted to be secured upon the sill of the door frame and comprising a flat sill engaging portion and a central cupped portion provided with a non-circular hole, the convex side of said cupped portion providing a space at the under side oit the plate, said pivot-post including a cam projection for co-opeiation with the spring pressed plunger, and being provided 'further at its lower end with a non-circular stud of relatively greater lcnglh than the metal thickness of said cupped portion ot the sill plate and adapted to have non-rotatable engagement in said hole of the plate.
