My invention relates to control` mechanism for drums and otherlii't-ing `or moving devices and especially to locking meenanism therefor, said control devices beingv arranged to permit the operating mechanisn'i to he moved i'reely into one position and said locking Adevices being adapted to hold said mechanism in said position to prevent its return movement. y'

The object of my invention is to provide mechanism of this character in which the operating and the controlling portions are provided with identically arranged key-receiving elements, so that a ,single key can engage either of said elements. This is particularly advantageous in locking` the controls for railway toilets bythe car attendant who may thus engage or release said controlsand may do so with a single key, ,such for example, as the one used by a Pullman porter to lock up the bedding in the berths.
A further object of myl invention is to provide operating mechanism of this character which is arranged to bemoved to :tully extended position in one direction and locked, said locking mechanisn'i beng releasable without requiring relative movement of said' operating mechanism. p That is, the ohject oit my invention is to provide operating mechanism which /pern'iits the devices controlled, to be seated tightly in place in one direction andto be held tightly in position. The releasing mechanism is adapted to operate without requirii'ig said parts to become unseated. The latter object is attained by providing a cam-operated pawl upon the ratchet control for the operating `mechanism, said pawl being arranged so that the face of the tooth thereof is substantially tangential to its pivotal point, thus the `cam is permitted to lift said pawl andr thus to unseat said tooth without requiring the operating mechanism to be slackened oit.

The receptacle a to be actuated is hingedly carried upon the floor b of a railway coach and is provided with sheaves c at each side which ride upon pivotv arms (l carried by one kof the side members b ot'fsaid car. My improved drum f, and control mechanism therefor, is adapted to be mounted so as to extend through a vertical wall b2 of the toilet roomso that the cable e does not have to pass through any portion of said wall and, is thus concealed within said room. Thus when said drum is turned by a key s said cable is Wound upon the periphery of said drum, said drum being rotated until the receptacle a or other device, connected to said cable is moved into closed position. ln this `position the paWl m engages the teeth of the ratchet L and holds said drum and thus the receptacle a tightly in position so that there is no play. When the key s is turned so as to rotate the control pin p in a counter-clockwise direction, however, the point 295 on saidpin bears against Said free end m2 of said paivl and lifts the same so that it is disengaged from said ratchet and is forced upwardly against the action of the spring a until said paivl m and said spring fa are forced tightly against the pin 0. As soon as said ratchet is released t-he Weight of said receptacle causes the same to .fall into disengagedl position. Said pin 0` is positioned relatively to the paivl m so that the point yf is prevented troni passing from off the end of said pawl, as is shown in Fig. That is, the pawl, when arranged in utmost released position, assumes an oblique angle with the end of said pawl and is prevented from passing over the end thereof because I- the distance between the axis of said pin p and the end of said pawlym is relatively less than the distance said point 1f' 'is spaced from said axis.
It is to be observed that said paWl releasing mechanisn'i will operate even though the drum has Wound said cable up very tightly so as to eliminate any play whatsoever. That is, the engaging face of said paWl and the corresponding face of the ratchet teeth are arranged so as to be substantially parallel and to extend in a plane substantially tangential to the pivot m for said pawl, and thus althoughthe paivl engages said ratchet teeth very firmly, said paivl is permitted to be raised to disengaging position because of said relative arrangement.
I claim: y
1. In control mechanism of the character described, a drum having an `axially arranged stem, a ratchet mounted on said stem, a pivoted pawl adapted normally to engage said ratchet, a rotatable cam-element adapted to engage the free end of said pawland lift the same out ofengagement vvith said ratchet, said drum and said rotatable -amelei'nent each provided with a key-engaging portion,.saidkey engaging portions being uniformly proportioned. i
2. A control mechanism comprising a rotatable drum having an axially arranged stem portion7 a casing composed of two separable halves adapted to house said control mechanism. and fastening means adapted to l hold said halves together.
3. A control mechanism comprising a. rotatable drum having an axially arranged stem portion, a casing .composed of tivo separable halves adapted to house said control mechanism, a central web extending transversely of, said casing, and fastening means adapted to hold said halves and said web together.
4j. A control mechanism comprising a rotatable drum having an axially arranged stein portion, al casing composed of tWo sepatatable drum having an axially arranged stem portion, a casing composed of tWo separable halves adapted to house said control v mechanism, a latchet fixed to said stem, the
end of said stem exterior of Said ratchet being formed kto receive alrey and coinciding with an aperture in the adjacent half of said housing.

A control mechanism adapted to extend through and be supported by a vertical partition, comprising a rotatable drum having '.1 an axially arranged stem portion'a-nd adapt ed to extend through and be journaled in said vertical partition, a ratchet xed to said stem, a pivoted pawl arranged' to engage said ratchet to prevent it .from turning in one direction, and a cam element engaging said paWl and adapted to lift said pavvl out of engagement With said ratchet.

A control mechanism adapted to extend through and be supported by a vertical partition, comprising a rotatable drum having an axially arranged stem portion and adapted to extend through and be journaled in said vertical partition, a casing composed of two separable halves adapted to be fastened to the opposite sides of said partition and to house said control mechanism, a ratchet ixed to said stem, the end of said stem exterior of said ratchet being formed to receive a key and coinciding With an aperture in the adjacent half of said housing, a piv-y oted pawl arranged to engage saidy ratchet to prevent it from turningin one direction,
and a cam element engaging said paWl and adapted to lift said paWl out of engagement with said ratchet.
8. A control mechanism adapted to extend through and be supported by a vertical partition, comprising `a rotatable drum having an axially arranged stem portion and adapted to extend through and be journaled in said vertical partition, a casing composed of tivo separable halves adapted to be fastened to the opposite sides of said partition and to house said control mechanism, a central web extending transversely of said casing, said transverse central Web forming a journal for the stem of said drum.

A control mechanism adapted to ex tend through and be supported by a vertical partition, comprising, a rotatable drum havingan axially arranged stem portion and adapted to extend throughand be jourualed in said vertical partition, a casing composed of two separable halves adapted to be fastened to the opposite sides of said partition and to house said control mecha-y nism, a centralV nfebextending transversely of said cas1ng,'sa1d transverse central web forming a journal for the stem of 'saidv drum, theend of said stem exterior of said ratchet being formed to receive a key and `coinciding with an aperture in .the adjacent half of said housing, a pivoted paivl carried by said Web arranged to` engage said ratchet to prevent' it from turning in one direction, and a cam element also causedby said web engaging said paWl and adapted to lift said paWl out of engagement with said ratchet. A control mechanism adapted to extendthrough and be supported by a vertical partition, comprising a rotatable`v drum having an axially arranged stem portion andadapted to extend through and be journaled in said vertical partition, a `casing composed of tivo separable halves adapted tofbe fastened to the opposite sides ot said partition and to house said control mechanism, a central Web extending transversely of said casing, fastening means adapted to hold said halves and said web together and to said vertical partition, .said transverse central Web forming a journal for the stem of said drum, a ratchet fixed to said stein, the end of said stem exterior of said ratchet being formed to receive a key and coinciding with an aperture in the adjacent half of said housing, a pivoted paivl arranged to engage said atchet to prevent it from turning in one direction, a cam element also causedV by said web engagingsaid pawl and adapted to lift said paivl out of engagement with said ratchet, and a stop adapted to limit th-e degree of movement given to said paivl by said cam.
12. In combination. with a supporting element, a drum journaled in such supporting element, said drum provided with a projee/ting' stein at one Side, a ratchet mounted' on such stein and an arcuate Spring-controlled pavvl located to engage lwith said ratchet, the :tree endoit said pawl extending beyond said ratchet, a rotatable cani located and adapt-ed in one position to perniit said paivl to be positioned so as to engage with said ratchet and said cani in other position lifting said pavvl so as to disengage the latter troni Said ratchet.
13. In combination with a supporting elenient, a drinn journaled in such supporting clement, said drum provided with a projecting` stein at one side, a ratchet mounted on such stein and an arcuate Spring-conratchet, the free end ot' Said paivl4 extending beyond said ratchet, a rotatable cani located and adapted in one position to permit said pawl' to be positioned so as to engage with said ratchet and said cam in other position lifting said pawl So as to disengage the latter :from said ratchet, Said ratchet and said cain being respectively provided with key-engaging means, the latter being of uniform proportions in structures so that a Single key may be used for operating either one thereof.
