MACHINE GUN.
Application :filed January 24, 1927.
The invention relates to machine guns. The object of the invention is to construct and provide a machine gun which will shoot without use of powder or the like. A further object of the invention is to provide a machine gun, the bullets whereof will not be inserted in cartridges .containing powder or other explosives. A stillfurther object Yof the invention is to provide a'niachine gun .0 the use whereof will be connected with com-p paratively little noise of explosion.
Other objects not specifically mentioned will be easily ascertained and understood from the following specification in connection. with the drawings forming a part thereof;
In the drawings showing a preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 isa side lview of a machine gun according to the invention. Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section through said machine gun. Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2. Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure 2, and Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Figure 2. A gun barrel 6 is screwed intothe wall of an explosion chamber 7 of Van internal combustion engine the body 8 of said combustion engine to which the co1nbustion chamber isV fastened contains a cylinder 9 and an intake channel 10. The carburetor 11 is fastened on the end of the intake 10 and communicates with a gas tank 12 fastened to and carried by the engine. Onto the free end of the cylinder 10 a housing 13 is fastened and in said housing a crank shaft 14 is journaled. Connecting rod 15 connects the crank of said shaft with i the piston 16 adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder 9. A valve 17 of the well known tappet type in the intake channel 10 prevents the gas from entering into the combustion chamber 7 as when said valve is in closed position in the usual way. A gear 19is mounted on a prolongation 20 of the crank shaft 14 and said gear meshes with a second gear 21 mounted upon a stud 22 fastened into'the wall of the casing 13. A third gear 23 is mounted upon a shaft 24 journaled in the walls of the casing 13 and extending through said casing. A cam 25 is mounted upon the shaft 24 and is adapted to engage the upper end of a tappet rod 26 adapted to engage the end of the valve stem 27 of the intake valve 17. The tappet rod .e5 26 is slidably mounted in sleeve 23 ferme Serial No. 163,135.
ing an integral part of the body casting of the engine and extends into the interior of the casing 13 into the vicinity of cam 25. On the same side of the casing on which the gears 19, 21 and 23 are' arranged, another gear 29 is mounted upon a shaft 30 also extending through the casing 13 and journaled in the walls thereof. The shaft 30 is located underneath the shaft 24 and extends parallel thereto. The gear 29 meshes also with the gear 21. The cam 31 is mounted upon the shaft 3() and arranged inside the casing 13. l
A magazine 32 of the well known worm type adapted to contain bullets is detachably fastened to the lower part of the combustion chamber 7 adjacent the end of the barrel 6 screwed in the wall of the combustion chamber. As indicated in Figure 2the bullets 33 have the usual form of rifle bullets, but are not inserted into cartridges. These bullets will be fed by means of a spring 34 contained in the magazine in the usual way to the intake opening Vin the barrel. In order to regulate the feed of the bullets and in order to insert the bullet in position in front of the barrel into said barrel a push rod 35 is slidably supported by a lug 36 on the cylinder wall. A spring 37 surrounds said push rod 35 and abuts with one of its ends the lug and with its other end a stop 38 adjustably mounted on said push rod. A tappet rod 39 is slidably iounted in a lug 49 of the body of the en- `gine and is adapted to engage the end of the push rod 35. The other end of said tappet rod extends into the casing 13 into the vicinity of thecam 31 and is adapted to bc actuated by said cam. l
On the other end of the push rod 35 a pin 41 is fastened carrying a plate 42 which is arranged in such a manner that. it is located directly in front of the bore of the barrel 6. A slot 43 is provided in thc casing of the combustion chamber 7 and the pin 41 eX- tends through said slot and the plate 42 covers said slot. When the cam 31 permits the rod 39 to slide into the casing 13. the spring 37 moves the rod 35 to the right in Figure 2. Thereby the pin 41 and the plate 42 is also moved towards the right. A channel 44, provided in the casting of the coinbustion chamber and forming according to Figure 2, a prolongation of the channel in the 32. will be imeavered that a,
bullet Willbe brought into position in front of the bore of the barrel 6'.y rEhe movement of the cam 31 is timed in suoli a manner, that as soon as a bullet is brought into this po-y sition, the cam Will force-thev tappet roch 39'-y and thereby the push rod 35 to the left in Figure 2 whereby the plate .42 will force the bullet located in front of the barrel intoY the bore thereof and Will' at the same time pref vent the other bullets from. being forced into the; explosion chamber. n
A.. sparkplugj 45 is.v insertedy in4 the Wallil ot the; combustionchamber 7 in the vicinity of the. outlet of the antic channel 10. Anelectric: conductor 46. connects said sparkplug mounted and. a. handle 49 may bel fastened to said Viiy Wheel; I
Vfhen the y Wheel isk rotated the piston Will. be,V reciprocated, in the cylinder 9., and
at the samev time the cam will be rotated ters of Patentsy is:
f since the gear 14 will rotate with. the fly ,Wheel 48 and Will actuate the gear 23 by means ofthe gear 21. Seeing that the gear 291s alsofmeshing with the gear 211, the push rod will be also actuated by rotating the yfly Wheel 48 and the timer 47 will time the explosions. i
'1n order to prevent an accidentaliring a lock. 49 is provided which secures.l the pnshi rodf35 from; accidental movementi thel lever 50 in anotch 53 provided in the` vpush rod 35. As long as the upper portion kof the lever 50 is in engagement with said barrel 6. By pressing on the lower portion of .the lever 50 the rod 35 becomes free for movement and when the fly vvheel is rotated either by hand or by the movement of the t piston in the cylinder, the cam 31 Willac'- tuate the push rod so that a'bullet may bev fitted into the barrel The explosiony of the gases in the combustion chamberv 7' will take the place of theV exploding powder vin f a cartridge and Will drive the bullets tlnoiigh the, barrel.
From the above it vv-ill. be understood that the engine may be run Without any bullets being fired. Then the push rod 35 is sc- A lever 50 is pivotally mounted on the lug,y 36 at 51," vandv a spring` 52 forces'the upper portion of cured by means ofthe lock lever in the posit'iony shown in Figure 2, the cam 31 may rotate Without actuating said rod and the spring 37 is prevented from moving said rod` towardl the cam. In this manner it. is pos` said lever 50 against the rod 35 and as soon as the notch'A 53'V will come in registration with the; notchy in the lever, said lever-'Will engage said notch and lock the push rod' 35 rsible to fire a single shot by pressing on the `lower part of the lever 50 and then release and secure it against movement. The Whole K y an electric, connection 58 leads toa battery not, shown and a second` connectionf59 leads fromv the batteryv to the. body of the casing 13 to, close the circuit., f
