Application filed August 17,1926. "semi No; 129,841.
This invention relates to metal strap seals of the type commonly used in railway freight cars, to seal the door against unauthorizedopening, which opening can only take place upon destruction or mutilation of the seal itself.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a seal of the type described which may be readily and cheaply manufactured, the ends of which may be locked or secured together quickly and which may notagam be separated without either destroying the seal or so mutilating the same that such attempt will be readily apparent.
To this end the invention contemplates the provision of a metal strap of elongated design, having a head portion bent upon itself a plurality of times and provided with locking tongues and recesses, so that the perforated opposite end of the strap may be inserted between'the head folds and se.
curely locked therein and against unlawful separation.
The invention further consists in the'novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan viewof a strap made according to my invention, and before'foldv 5-5 of Fig. 2.
' site end is split so as to form a leg adapted" ing.
in use. 7 I
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the partially folded strap. I
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view along thefline Referring now to the embodiment shown in the drawings, I have shown a seal strap at 1 having a perforated end 2. The oppoto be folded .around itself twice to form folds 3 and 4, part 5 remaining integrally attached to the main portion of the strap and between folds 3 and 4 (see Fig. 3).
The fold 4 is provided with a locking tongue 6 having side wings 7 and adapted to extend through aperture 8 in the strap body 1 and beopened out. This secures the folds 3, 4 and 5 to the body in superposed relation.
A cut out tongue 9 having auxiliary Fig. 2 1s a View showing the folded strap tampering apparent.
tongue 9 is provided in fold 4 and a. locking aperture as at 10. The perforated end being bent backwardly until tongue 9 is out of the path of travel of the strap 2, the tongue 11 of the strap will enter aperture 10 i of the fold 4, the tongue 9 of the fold 4 being thus brought opposite the aperture 13 in the end 2 of the strap, and tongue 9 opposite the registering apertures 14 and 15 inparts 5 tongue 9 may be pushed into aperture13 by pressingon the 1 back of this tongue, the] auxiliary tongue 9 entering the aligned "apertures. 14 and 15.' An offsetportion' 16 in fold 3 allows the tongue 9 to project through apertures 14 and 15 to its full extent. These parts will prevent withdrawal of the end of the strap from the locking head.
A sidewing 12 as an integral part of the strapfbody is now to be folded over and tucked between'folds 3 and 5. In this po sition it acts as a reinforcement to the head and prevents the parts from being unfolded to remove the perforated end of the strap.- .As' such the end 2 is encased on all sides in a metal sheath open only at that side through which it is passed between folds 4 and 5.
WVhile it is not impossible to unfold the parts and thus remove the end of'the strap, yet because of the closeness of the fit it is extremely difficult to do so and such action would so mutilate the parts asto makethis' and 12 (Fig.1) respectively. At this stage 1 The strap maybear any desired designation as is well known in seals of this type. f
. I claim:
1 A car SBEllCOIIlPllSlIlg a metal strap, said strap having at one end a portion substantially three times'the width of the body of the strap, forming wings extending on' each side of the longitudinal center of the strap, oneof said wings being substantially three times the length of the other wing, an
7 aperture in one of said. wings, and a punched out tongue in the opposite end of said strap.
2. A car seal comprising a metal strap, wings extending on each side of the longtudinal center of said strap, one of said wings being folded first beneath and then first mentioned Wing and a tongue in the on top of itself, the three thicknesses of the strap end entering an aperture in the wing 10 material thus formed being then folded to to prevent withdrawal of the strap end from ward the'longitudina-l center ofandupon the folded wing. v o
the strap, the loose end of the strap being In'testimony whereof, I' affix my signainserted between two folds of the first menture.
