Application filed August 11, 1925. 'Serial No. 49,620.
My said invention relates to a turnstile which finds its most important use in selfserving stores of the Piggly Wiggly type but may obviously be used in other situations either. in" the form hereinafter described or in other forms. It is an object of the invention to provide "a device of this character 1: locking means shall be concealed. 1
Another objectlof the invention is to. pro-' vide a device of this character in which the various connecting parts, etc. shall beconcealed so as to presentsubstantially a plain" smooth: surface of wood or other material to the observer. v v 7 Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made apart hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a planof my device; Figure 2, a vertical section partly'in elevation, V 3
Figure 3, a horizontal section through the locking means, and a Figure 4, a detail of the locking means with the concealing parts omitted.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates 'a post, the top only being shown.

outer surface of the post. The block is indicated as having a hollow center but this is not essential. v
7 At oneside the block has slots 141- formed therein theseslots extending circumferentially of the block for a limited distancefand growing shallower toward their outer ends as clearly shown in Fig. 3. In the present embodiment of the" invention balls 15 are shown in the slotsgthes'e balls being forced toward'the ends of the slots by means of coil springs 16 bearing at one end against the balls and at the other being formed to clasp pins 17 which are secured in any suitable manner. to the block 12. As here shown the slots 14 are ofsufii'cient'length to perwit the springs to be turned in either direcs'ecure by Letters Patent, is:
to the right or left ofthe' pins 17 tion so that thbaus y be locatd either r asst,
vA. head l8 is, mounted for rotation about if: the screw 11 as an axis, this, head having arms 19 here shown as spacedat intervals'of PPloXimately ,thereabout though this] arrangement may be varied: at will. The
head is provided with a cap 20 secured there. to by screws 21 and this capis. cored outat its under side'to receive the head of. thescrew 11 which is concealed by the cap. Obvious}; lythe shallow recess indicated in the "head 18 under the head ofthe screw may befof sufficient depth to, receive the screw "head; while the jcap'may'fconsist of. a flat block of changes will occur to those skilled jin'the art. An annular outer shell 22 is secured tothe head by screws 28 extending through a'horie zontal flange24 integral Withfthe outer shell block: Preferably a space is left in the hori-.
zontal flange 24 extending to the. hollow 7o wood over the recess in the head and other space in the block "12 though this is not essential. screw 11 is spaced from theupper face of the head 18 to permit slight relative up and. down movement, i
The operation of the device is believed to' be obvious from the abovedescription in con: nection With-the drawings. It will be un-. derstood that by turning the springs through one side of the pin to the other the turnstile or to the left, it being, as above stated, unidirectionalin'its operation and being locked Preferably also, the head of the may be arranged torotate either to the right loo of the invention and therefore I do not limit I myself to what is described in the specification and shown in the drawings but only as indicated in the. appended claimsf 7 Having thus fully described my said invention Whitt'l claim is new and desire to I 1. A turnstile comprising a post,
or more rollers located between adjacentpe- V I 9 an arc of and moving the-balls 15 from l 1 l r screw passing. through 'thehea'd axially into tion in one a ripheral surfaces of the post and the head said surfaces being provided with recesses of Varying depth circumferentiallyof the turnstile, and a resilient means to force such rollers circumferentially'of the turnstlle llltQ,
position for locking the head against rotadirection, substantially asset forth.
2. A turnstile comprising a fixedpost, a rotary head thereon, arms on the head, a
the post, a cap over the headotsaid screw I and means for locking-the hood agalnst're- .-.Vers'e rotation at anyposition at which 1t thepostfa cap over the head of said screw .120
mayibe stopped, substantially as set forth;
3; Aturnstile comprising a fixed post, a rotary head thereon, armsonythe head, a screw passing through the head axially into and spring-pressed rollers for locking the head against movement in one direction, substantially as set forth, p r A turnstile comprising a fixed post, a
circular block fixed to the upper end ofthe post in coxial relation thereto, a head hav ing a flange surrounding said block, ar1ns V on the headfand v spring-pressed rollers on the head, and means between the head and the block for locking the'head selectively against rotation in either direction, substantially as set forth. r
6. A'turnstile comprising a fixed post, a
circularfblock fixed to the upper'end of the post in coaxialrelatiou' thereto, a head hay,-v
ing a flange surrounding said block, and a flange overlying the same,-a block secured to the head by screws extending up through the last-named flange, radial arms on said axially oi the post, and a cap covering the hcadof the last-named screw, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I hayehereunto set my hand atJackson, Tennessee, this 6th day of August,rA. D. n neteenhundredgand twenty-five.
