The instrument board of a motor vehicle is indicated generally at 1 which is provided as usual with the ignition control switch 2. The usual battery of the automobile is indicated at 3' and the starter button at 4.
This invention contemplates controlling the primary circuit 5 from the battery which leads to the various electrical apparatus of 'l s'ectional view taken on the motor vehicle and for this purpose proin one position to close the maincircuit from the battery and in the-other position to open said circuit to revent operation of electrical :apparatus on t e automobile.

This end wall 15 is also formed with rod recesses 17 for receiving the ends of the'locking rods 18 slidably mounted .in an axial plane in the cylinder 13. A'bearing plate 19 is mounted in the forward end or the housing 14 and provided with a cylindrical bearing ortion 20 receiving and mounting the loc ing cylinder 13 therein.
The instrument board 1 is formed with an opening through which the cylinder 13 extends. On the forward face of the instrument board surrounding the cylinder is mounted the escutcheon plate 21 while an operating handle for the 7 cylinder 22 is mounted on the forward end of the cylinder and which is received within the recess 23 formed insaid handle. A suitable set screw or'locking screw 24 as shown in Fig. 9 serves to rigidly unite the operating handle '22 with the c linder.

This key guiding plug on its rear end is formed with an annular flange 27 seating in a correspondin ly sha ed recess in the rear end of the locking cy nder as shown in Fig. 4, while substantlall the entire length of the plug is bifurcate to provide a key slot 28 for slidably receiving the key 29. The forward end of this key plug extends beyond the forward end of the locking cylinder 13 and through an opening 30 in the handle 22 in a manner as shown 1n Fig. 2 so that the ke may be slidably inserted from the forwar end thereof through the slot in an axial direction in the cylinder.
The central portion of the outer periphery of the locking cylinder 13 is provided with arcuate recesses 31 in which extend the locking bolts 32 formed with bifurcated ends 33 for receivingithe, lockin lugs 34 mounted on the locking rods 18, which in oneposition of their slidin movement are adapted to be seated in the ifurcated end portion of the locking bolts 32 as shown in Fig. 4 for preventing rotation of the locking cylinder 13.
In this position of the locking rods 18, the ends thereof seat in the recesses 17 in the closed end portion 16 of the casin' and co-' operatev to effectively lock the cylinder 13 against rotation.
The locking bolts 32 are carried by the cylindrical bearing portion 20 of the bearing plate 19 and serve to limit the rotative movement of the locking cylinder in accordance with the size bf the arcuate slots 31. The portions of the slot 31 adjacent to the lugs 34 are enlarged as shown at 35 to permit the movement of the lugs in the unlocking operation of the cylinder by the key 29, which will be described.
A plurality of radially extending bores 36 are formed in the locking cylinder communicating with the bore 25 in the central portion thereof, and in which are mounted looking pawls 37 adapted for sliding movement in the radial bore and normally projected toward the axial bore 25 by suitable coiled springs 38. These locking pawls 37 areprovided with shoulders 39 adapted to seat in the reduced diameters 40 of the locking rods 18 so that in seated position as shown in Fig. 3, these pawls will prevent axial movement of the locking rods 18 and are moved by the key to the position shown in Fig. 4 for permitting the unlocking of the locking cylinder so that it may be subsequentl operated for moving-the wires 9 or a 100 ing bolt as well as any other desired type of mechanism in the rotationof said cylinder.
These locking pawls 37 are also provided with laterally extending feet 41 which are adapted to seat in recesses 42 in locking position formed inthe key guiding plug 26 so as to lock said key guiding plug against rotation in the locking cylinder. These recesses are more clearly shown in Fig. 6.
Operating blocks 43 are mounted on the locking rods 18 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5,
are positioned in the locking cylinder 13 in such a manner that in the position of the.
parts as indicated in the drawing which is the locked position of the mechanism, the blocks will have theedges formed with the key slots 46 terminating adjacent the key receiving slot 28 formed in the key guiding plug 26. w
The key 29 is formed with recessed edge portions 47 to provide operating extensions 48 projecting from these edges in a predetermined positlon for engagement in the key slots 46 of the operating blocks while at 49 the recessed edge portion of the key is formed with projections for engagement with the feet 41 of the locking pawls 37 in order that a properly constructed key placed in the slot III) relative movement of the plugs 26 in the -vice as'a 28 and turned will release the several locking devices so that the locking cylinder may. be released for operation.
Figure 4 illustrates the key positioned in place to ermit the release of the locking dehove described in which the projections 49 are shownin position and in engagement with the locking pawls 37, supporting said pawls in raised position so that the rods 18 may be moved axially upon a ro-, tation of the key and the plug 26 through a limited movement governed by the length of the key slots 46 in which movement the projections 48 will slidably engage in the slots 46 of the operating blocks and due to the angular relation of said slots will produce an axial movementof the o crating blocks in the recesses 44 so that the ugs 34 and the ends of the rods 18 will be moved out of engagement with the locking bolts 32 and the recesses 17. This will permit the release of all parts for an operation of the locking cylinder '13 by the operation of the handle 22.
The operation of the handle 22 will move the wire 9 through the movement of the arm 12 so that the switch blade 8 will be operated to close the circuit between the contacts 7 From the above description, it will be seen that a locking mechanism has been provided requiring the movement of two cooperating and interlocking mechanisms through the operationof a single ke which is required to have two movements or producing the total releasing of the locking parts for the cylinder in order to permit operation of the locking cylinder for the purpose to which it is adapted. In addition, the formation of the key guiding slot 28, the positioning of the locking pawls 37 and 'the operating blocks 43 together with the formation of the key slots 46 therein provide a plural combinat-ion of control elements for the lock with which the key must be operatively associated by which an endless combination of constructions may be provided in order that any number of locks may be constructed requiring separate keys for their operation.
The lock construction further tends to prevent the opening thereof with instruments other than a key designed'to fit the lock in view of the fact that the operating block 43 is always concealed in the locked position of the parts from engagement through instruments inserted in the slot which mightbe used to operate the blocks in that the projecting portions are positioned to one side. of the key slots 46 and require a locking cylinder to obtain operation of the locking rods 18.
This rotation of the plug 26 is normally prevented by the locking pawls 37 seating in the recesses 42 in the plug.
With the construction above described, ap-
plied to a motor vehicle construction, with the switch member 8 controlled thereby, it will be seen that convenient operation and control over the electrical circuits of a motor vehicle may be obtained which will prevent tampering and unauthorized operation of the electrical apparatus operated by the ignition switch 2 or the starterbutton 4 from the battery.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In combination, a support, a locking cylinder rotatable in said support, a key plug rotatable in said cylinder, movable locking means for locking the cylinder in the support against rotation, secondary locking means for locking the plug against rotation in the cylinder, said means and secondary lockin means having interlocking cooperation with each other, and requiring a key of predetermined form movable in said key plug in two directions successively for unlocking both of the locking means successively from interlocking cooperation with each other and locking cooperation with the support permitting rotation of said cylinder in said support.
2. In combination, a support, a locking cylinder rotatable in said support, a key plug rotatable in said cylinder having a key slot formed therein to slidably receive a key of predetermined form, locking bars mounted for axial sliding movement in said locking cylinder for cooperation with the casing, said lockin bars being mounted in parallelism with the key slot in said key plug, locking pawls in said locking cylinder to lock the key plug against rotation .and having interlocking cooperation with said locking bars,
the formation of said key being adapted to operate said lockin pawls for releasing the SAMUEL G. PATTERSON.
