My invention relates to closures and similar structures and is in part a division of and in part an addition to the invention shown, described and claimed in my Patent No. 1,320,466, Serial No. 799,641.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a cap or closure for vessels with a cover part or removable end portion similar to the construction disclosed in the patent referred to above.

The devices may be made of metal, paper or other material suitable for the purpose.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the tubular member or body part is provided at its upper open end with an outstanding flange 21 and at its lower open end the body 20 is threaded as at 22 or has other suitable means whereby it may be coupled to or releasably interlocked with cooperating means on a vessel, such as a bottle, jar or the like. By the term tubular as applied to the body part it is to be understood that I mean a part which is circular, elliptical, rectangular or similarly shaped in transverse cross section, and also either of uniform cross-section, conical or pyramidal. The preferred construction comprises a cylindrical body part adapted to receive and surround the neck or upper end of a bottle or other container.
At its upper open end the body part 20 is closedby a cover part 23 conforming to the shape of the flange 21 andhaving its peripheral edge extending a trifle beyond the outer edge of said flange 21. Three spaced tabs 24, and 26 are formed integral with the cover part 23 and extend radially outwardly from the peripheral edge of said cover part. The tabs, tongues or extensions and 26 are relatively much longer than the tongue 24, which is merely a locking tongue and also serves as a hinge when the cover is removed, as will appear hereinafter. Before the seaming operation, each of the tongues 25 and 2G is bent into an angular position beneath the flange 21, as clearly shown by the dotted angular line 27, while the tongue 24 is bent at its attached edge into a position underneath the flange 21. In order that they may be engaged by a suitable unlocking tool, each tab 25 and 26 is provided with a hole 28 near its free end which hole will be exposed when the cover part has been seamed to the body part, aswill appear.
-lVitl1in its marginal edge the cover part 23 has a circular depression or groove 29, the outer wall 30 of which its closely against the innerwall of the body part 20 and affords a more extensive frictional sealing surface between the cover part and the body part. The groove 29 also provides a bead 31 on the under side of the cover part 23 whereby the latter may be centered on the mouth of the body part.
In Figures 1 to 3, the portion of the cover part 23 within the margin of the depression 29 is shown to be flush with the top end of the cap or closure. The depending flange portion of said cover part is spaced from the outer wall 30 of the annular depression 29 and forms with said outer wall a seat for the upper end of the body 20. When the flange formed in which the to Jart 23 constitutes the entire top of the closure, or the entire top end of the tubular closure body.
, When the locking tongues on the cover part have been bent into locking position the cover part 23 is seamed and removably secured to the body part 20 by radially cor rugating the edges of the cover part and the flange on the body part and simultaneously bending the edges down along the outer side of the body part. The corrugations 32 produced are parallel to one another and extend longitudinallyof the axis of the body and form a series of elongated, radial depressions deepest at the edges of the parts seamed together and vanishing a short distance from the edges. The corrugated edges of the parts take up the ditference in. peripheral length between the cover and'fiange, and body, and these corrugations 32 may be strai htened out sufficiently to readily permit the removal of the cover part. Simply by withdrawing the tabs 25 and 26 from beneath the corrugated edge releases the locking means at two points and by pulling radially and then upwardly the cover may be pulled off around the locking tongue 24 as a hinge. The closure shown in Figure 3 discloses, partly in section and partly in side elevation, how the cover part appears when seamed in. place on the body part. It will be seen that the entire closure is therefore made without appreciably stretching the metal or other material of which it is composed as the corrugating and bending operation simply bends the material. The corrugated portion of the cap forms a knurled surface serving as a grip whereby the closure maybe readily screwed onto or off the container.
Referring to Figure 4, a closure embodying my invention is shown applied to a bottle or jar 33. The tubular body 20 is formed with the continuous flange 21 at its upper edge. The cover 231 is similar in all respects to the cover part 23 of Figures 1, 2 and 3 except that the groove 29 has been omitted therefrom. Disposed between the edgeof the flange 21 there is a sealing gasket 34 which is adapted to close the mouth of the jar 33. The gasket is secured in place between the cover part and the body part when the flange and outer edge of the cover are turned over in the corrugating and bending operation. The lower edge 35 of the body part 20 is bent, crimped, spun or otherwise formed or necked down beneath the shoulder 36 on the neck of the container 33. The continuous,
inner flange thus formed serves to provide a and 6 embody the main features of the previously described closures. A different cover part employed'and an enlarged partial cross section of the same is shown in Figure 7; It comprises a depressed center wall 3?, a vertical circular wall or upwardly extending flange or skirt 33 at the edge of the wall 37, and an outstanding continuous flange 39 at the upper edge of the wall 38. The flange 39 has tongues (not shown) similar to those shown on the cover part There is a circumferentially extending bead 40 formed near the lower edge of the interior surface of the wall 38 which bead provides a circumferentially extending grooveetl of arcuate crosssection in the outer surface of the wall 38 which surface faces and engages the innor surface of the tubular part of the closure. The groove 11 serves as a recess to contain solder, sealing material or similar substance and the substance filling the groove is disposed flush with the outer surface of the wall 38. the operation of applying the cover part the substance or plastic sealing charge in the groove 41 may be extruded or forced therefrom by means of cold or heatedplunger the colures 5 and 6 that the cover part is titted into the mouth of the tubular part and on a shoulder 121 formed by an interior cir eular bead 4&3 on the body part 20. Tdhen the cover part applied and the substance 42 expelled from the groove d1, the subs. ance fiows into and substantially fills the thin space between the cover part and body part adjacent the groove and affords a more perfect seal throughout the periphery cf the two opposed parts which is also in addition to the sealing'surfaces at other points. a at the shoulder 421 which also confines th extruded sealing substance, and at the upper edge of the wall 38 for instance. The cover part is seeuredto the body part by a corrugated seam similar to the previously de scribed forms.

which coincide with and are preferably made at the time the cover part is seamed to the body part. The ribs or corrugations 44 stiffen the tongues and they may therefore serve as levers for detaching the cover part, and having but slight tendency to bend will pry out the corrugations when the free end thereof is swung outwardly. The end of the cover detaching lever is bent at its lower end, as at 45, so that it can readily be engaged with the fingers.
The interior bead 43 provides a circular exterior groove whereby a shoulder 47 is provided. The end 48 of the detaching lever gradually slides down along the outer surface of the body part 20 as the lever is pulled outwardly at its free end and finally the end 48 drops into the groove 46 and the shoulder 47 serves as a fulcrum for the detaching lever whereb the corru ations ma 1 be strai htened out still further and whereby the cover part may finally be lifted off. The bead 43 also serves to stiffen the body part at the end where the cover part is attached.
In the construction shown in Figure 6 the lower end of the body is spun beneath or otherwise attached to the bead 36 on the neck of the container as in the construction shown in Figure 4. A gasket 49 of suitable material n'iay also be held in place over the mouth of the bottle by the closure and may be permanently attached to the under side of the cover part by suitable adhesive or by more positive connecting means. The gasket 49 is located substantially in the plane of the bead In Figures 8, 9 and 10 I have shown the relation of the cover part and body part as they appear when seamed and locked together, when the cover has been partly removed, and finally when the cover is just being lifted off the body part. The body part in this case is provided with an exterior bead or protuberance which fits within one of the longitudinal corrugations 44 of the lever or tongue 26. The head or protuberance 50 provides a shoulder 51 against which the upper end 48 of the lever 26 may bear as a fulcrum when the cover is being removed. The flange 21 being slightly shorter than the rerlapping portion of the cover part permits the removal of the latter without the binding of the detaching lever thereagainst.
In l igures 11 and 12 I have shown a tubular body part 20 which is of uniform diameter throughout except for the interior bead 43. In these constructions neither the interior closure 53 nor the body part 20 are provided with fianges. The cup shaped top or cover part 53 has a groove 41 similar to the one shown in Figure 7 to contain the solder or sealing substance which is squeezed out of the groove 41 by pressing out the head 40 when the cover part is fitted in place in the end of the body part 20. The
edge of the bottom 54 of the cover part rests on the shoulder 421 at the upper edge of the bead 43 where a seal is provided in addition to the seal afforded by the material 42. \Vhen the cover part has been fitted in the body part and part of the sealing material forced from the groove 41, the upper edges 55 and 56 are simultaneously corrugated and bent inwardly and downwardly toward the axis of the body part and toward the bottom 54 thereby fastening the cover part in place. The corrugations 57 thus produced may be bent out to remove the cover part, by raising the edges 55 and 56.
Certain of the improvements described herein are not limited to use with a closure, but may be utilized in cans and the like. For example, the body part 20 as shown in Figs. 11 and 12 may constitute the cylindrical body of a receptacle or vessel such as a can and the cover part 53 may form the closure for such vessel. The method of forming the seal between the receptacle 20 and the closure 53 is described in the preceding paragraph. According to this invention, a hermetically sealed package is formed in which the closure that carries the charge of coherent plastic sealing material 42, after being placed on the vessel 20 with the sealing material 42 out of contact therewith, has the bead 41 thereof re-formed to extrude part of such plastic sealing charge against the side wall of the vessel and intrude portions of such charge between the side wall of the vessel and other portions of the closure, the ex truded charge being confined by the shoulder 421 and other parts of the vessel and closure.
It will be clear that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact details shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what 7 I claim is 1. A closure for containers comprising a hollow cylindrical body part having threaded means whereby it may be. detachably se cured to a container, and a cover part secured to the upper end of said. body part and readily detachable therefrom, said cover part constituting the entire top of said closure and having its peripheral edge extending around the outside of the cylindrical wall of said body part.
2. A closure for containers comprising a tubular body provided at one end with means for attaching the same to a container, anda cover attached to the other end of said body and comprising a part having a circular row of corrugations extending longitudinally of the axis of the body part said cover constituting the entire top of said enclosure.
3. A cap for containers comprising a hollow cylindrical body'provided at one end with an exterior shoulder and having means at its opposite end for attaching the cap to a container, and a cover having a part secured beneath said shoulder at the end of said body and having a radially corrugated part on the outer side thereof providing a grip portion at the u Jper end of the cap whereby it may be securely gripped in turning the cap onto and off of a container.

A closure for containers comprising a bod )art havin means whereb the closure may be secured to a container, a top part detachably secured to said body part by inter fitting longitudinal corrugations on said parts, the construction being such that said top part may be readily detached from said body part without rupturing ti o parts and without detaching the body part from the container to which the closure has been applied.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular body part, a cover part secured thereto, and a tongue on the cover part having a portion thereof doubled beneath said cover part and also having a longitudinal stiffening corrugation extendin substantially to the free end thereof and adapted to serve as a lever for removing the cover part from the body part.
6. In a de ice of the class described, the combination of a body part having a shoulder formed thereon, a cover part removably secured to the body part, and a tongue on said cover part having a portion capable of engaging said shoulder whereby the shoulder serves as a fulcrum for said tongue in removing said cover partp 7. In a device of'the class described, the combination of a body part, a cover part, and avdevice locking said cover part to said body part, said device being stiffened whereby it may serve as a lever for detaching the cover part from the body part.
A cap having a peripheral flange provided with corrugations extending transversely thereof, said cap being provided with a tongue having a part extending beneath and within said flange and stiffened to form a detaching lever for said cap.
9. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a body part having an interior shoulder near its mouth forming a corresponding gro vc in the exterior wall of the body part, a cover part having a portion fit-ting the mouth of said body part and resting on said shoulder, and a tongue on said cover part locking the same to said body part and being stiffened whereby said tongue may serve as a lever for detaching the cover part from the body part, said tongue having a part adapted to enter and fulcrum in said groove.
10. The combination with a container of a closure therefor comprising a tubular part lar part by corrugations and locking means.
11. The combination with a tubular member, of a cover member detachably secured to said tubular member, andineans on said cover member operable to fulcrum on said tubular member for the purpose of removing said cover member.
12. A cap having a peripheral flange provided with a detaching tongue at its lower edge, said tongue being folded upon itself and having the folded portion disposed within the flange, the free end of the tongue extending below the edge of the flange, said tongue being stiffened longitudinally and serving as a lever for detaching the entire cap.
13. The combination with a container of a closure attached thereto and comprising a body part and a cap part detacliably secured to said body part by radial corrugations, and means whereby said cap part may be ren'ioved from said body part while retaining the body part in its attached relation to the container.
14 A closure for bottles and jars comprising a tubular body having means at the bottom end thereof for removably securing the same to a bottle or jar and an exterior shoulder at the top end, and a cap closing the top end of said body, said cap having a peripheral flange extending around the outside of said shoulder and held on said body thereby, one of said parts of the closure having a series of corrugations therein forming a knurled portion on the outside of the closure wherebythe same may be securely gripped by the fingers in turning it onto and off of a bottle or jar.
15; A cover part comprising a circular wall having its outer side provided with a circumferentially extending groove containing a sealing .ubstance wholly within the groove, and a bead on'the inner side of said wall corresponding to said groove, said sealing substance being fusible and also adapted to flow under preszure, the arrangement being such that sealing substance is expelled from'said groove by applying heat or pressure or both to said head. 7
16. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular body part, a cover part having a depressed port-ion fitting within the body part, said depressed portion having a wall provided with an outwardly opening narrow circumferential groove forming a corresponding bead within the depressed portion, said groove containing a plastic sealing or seaming material, said bead being arranged to be operated on by a device fitted into said depressed portion to expel'the sealing or seaming material from said groove and into contact with the body part to substantially'fill the space between said parts.
- 17. In a device of the class described, the

combination of a tubular body part having an interior bead adjacent one end, a cover part resting on said bead, the edges of said parts being secured together to unite said parts, one of said parts having a circumferential groove in the wall thereof facing the space between said parts and containing sealing material, said groove forming a corresponding bead on the opposite side of the wall against which means may operate to expel sealing material from said groove.
18. A cap for containers comprising a hollow cylindrical body open at one end and having means adjacent said open end for detachably coupling the cap to a container, and a cover closing the other end of said body, said cover being provided with a c1rcular depression in its upper surface, the outer surface of the outer wall of said depression bearing against the interior surface of said body, said cover having a depending flange spaced from the outer wallof said circular depression and forming with said outer wall a seat for the upper end of said body, and means comprising a portion of said cover at the edge of said flange engaging a portion of said body to secure the cover to the body.
19. A cap for containers comprising a hollow cylindrical body open at one end and having means adjacent saidopen end for attaching the cap to a container, and a cover constituting the entire top end of said body, said cover being secured to and closing the top end of said body, said cover having a depending flange extending around the outside of said body, the said flange having a series of corrugations or depressions therein lockingly interfitting with corresponding corrugations or depressions on said body and also forming a roughened or knurled portion on the cap whereby the same may be gripped in turning the cap onto and off of a container.
20. A two-piece cap for containers comprising a hollow cylindrical body open at its lower end and having a threaded portion adjacent said open end for attaching the cap to a container, and a cover secured to and closing the top end of said body and having a depending flange extending around the outside of said body, said flange having a series of parallel corrugations extending longitudinally of the axis of the body and terminating at the lower edge of said flange, said corrugations lockingly interfitting with corresponding corrugations in said body to assist in uniting the cover to the body and also to form a knurled portion on the outside of the cap whereby the cap may be securely gripped in turning it onto and off of a container.
21. A cap for containers comprising a hollow cylindrical body open at one end and provided adjacent said open end with means for attaching the cap to a container, said body having an exterior shoulder adjacent the opposite end thereof, and a cover 0 osing the shouldered end of said body and having a portion extending outside of said body and beneath said shoulder to secure the cover to the body, said cap having a circular row of parallel corrugations extending longitudinally of the axis of the cap, said row of corrugations serving as a grip whereby the cap may be securely gripped to turn it onto and off of a container. 7
22. The combination with a tubular body, of a closure therefor comprising a portion forming a cover for the mouth of said body and a portion disposed to face the tubular wall of said body, said last-mentioned portion having a ductile part formin an annular open groove facing said tubu ar wall, and plastic sealing substance disposed in said groove, part of said substance being extruded from said groove by reformation of said ductile part to substantially fill the space between said wall and said last-mentioned portion of said closure.
23. In a device of the class described, a member having a tubular wall provided on one side thereof with a recess containing sealing or seaming material substantially wholly within said recess and a bead on the other side of said wall corresponding to said recess, said sealing or seaming material being fusible and also adapted to flow when pressure is applied to said bead, the arrangement being such that seaming or sealing material is expelled from said recess by the application to said bead, of heat or pressure or both. w
24. A closure comprising a tubular wall having recess means containing plastic sealing or seaming material, and bead means corresponding to said recess means, said sealing or seaming material being designed to be expelled from such recess means, for sealing or seaming purposes, by the application to said bead means of heat or pressure or both heat and pressure to substantially fill the space between the wall of said closure and the wall of the member to which such closure is applied.
25. A closure comprising a cup-shaped body having a tubular wall provided with an outwardly extending flange at its upper edge adapted for securing said closure to a container or the like, said wall also having recess means containing sealing or seaming material, and bead means corresponding to said recess means, said sealing or seaming material being designed to be expelled from such recess means, for sealing or seaming pur poses, by the application to said bead means, of heat or pressure or both.

A closure for containers comprising a tubular body part having means adjacent one end thereof whereby it may be detachably coupled to a container, and a top part closing the other end of said body and having a peripheral flange extending around the outside thereof, one of said parts having a series of corrugations therein forming means on the closure whereby the same may be gripped in turning it onto and off .of a container.
29. A closure for containers such as bottles and jars comprising a hollow cylindrical body open at one end and having means adjacent said open end for detachably coupling said closure to a container, and a cover secured to and closing the other end of said body, said cover being provided with a circular depression within its margin providing a wall having a surfaceengaging the inner surface of said body, said cover having a depending flange spaced from said walland cooperating therewith to provide an inverted annular seat for the upper end of said body.
30. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular body part having an interior bead adjacent one end, and a cover part resting on said bead, the edges of said parts being corrugated and bent toward the axis of said tubular part to unite said parts, one of said parts having a circuinferential groove in the wall. thereof facing the space between said parts, said groove containing sealing material and forming a corresponding bead on the opposite side of said wall against which means may operate to eXpell sealing material from said groove.

As an article of manufacture, a closure for a tubular body comprising a cover portion, a flange portion arranged to face the wall of such body, said flange portion including a collapsible ductile part forming a groove to accommodate sealing substance, plastic sealing substance disposed in said groove and bearing against said ductile part, and said ductile part being adapted to be partly collapsed to accomplish extrusion of a portion of the sealing substance from said groove to substantially fill the space between said Wall and said flange portion.

As an article of manufacture, a closure for a tubular body comprising a cover portion, a flange portion arranged to face the wall of said body, said flange portion including a ductile part of arcuate cross section formed to accommodate a sealing charge, a sealing charge of plastic material disposed in said ductile part and bearing against its arcuate wall, and said ductile part being adaptable to be compressed to accomplish extrusion 'of a portion of said sealing charge from the ductile part of ar'cuate cross section to substantially fill the space between said wall and said flange portion. 7

The combination with a tubular body, of a closure cap comprising a cover portion adapted to cover the mouth of said body and 'a flange portion extending therefrom in position to face a wall of said body, said lange portion including a part having a grooved portion, and a plastic sealing charge in said grooved portion, the latter being deformed and portions of said charge being confined in the space between said wall and said flange and contacting with both said wall and said flange above and below said 7 grooved portion.

As an article of manufacture, a tubular body having a sealing wall, and a closure for said body comprising a cover portion, a flange portion arranged to face the sealing lot) wall of said body, said flange portion including a ductile part formed to provide a channel on the side of the flange facing the wall and a protruding portion on the other side of the flange, a sealing charge of plastic material disposed in said channel, said protruding portion being adaptable to be mechanically de-formable to accomplish; ex trusion of the portion of the sealing charge from the channel and against the sealing wall of said body.
39. The method of forming a sealed joint which includes providing a tubular body and a closure therefor having a groove adapted to face a wall of said body, disposing a charge of plastic sealing material within the groove in the closure, placing the closure carrying said charge upon said body, and reforming such grooved portion of the closure to extrude the plastic sealing charge against and along said closure and the wall of said body into the spaces above and below said groove between said closure and said wall and confining the extruded charge between said wall of the body and portions of the closure.
40. The method of forming a sealed joint which includes providing a body having a plain tubular wall and a closure therefor having a groove adapted to face said plain wall; disposing a charge of plastic sealing substance within said groove in the closure; supporting the charge of sealing material opposite said plain wall of said body by means of the closure; and re-forming such grooved portion of the closure to intrude portions of the plastic sealing substance along and against the plain wall of said body and along and against other portions of the closure above and below said groove.
41. The method of forming av sealed joint which includes providing a tubular body and a closure therefor having a deformable groove adapted to face a wall of said body; disposing a sealing charge of plastic material within said groove in the closure, placing the closure carrying said charge upon said body, and re-forming such grooved portion of the closure to intrude portions of such plastic sealing charge into a confined space along and between said wall of said body and other portions of the closure above and below said groove and confining said charge above and below said groove.
42. The method of forming a sealed package which includes providing a receptacle and a closure therefor; disposing a charge of plastic sealing material in a groove in said closure; placing the closure carrying said charge upon said receptacle; reformingthe grooved portion of said closure to squeeze portions of said plastic charge from said groove into the space between the side wall of said receptacle and that part of said closure opposite said wall, to substantially fill said space; and confining said charge to said space.
43. The method of forming a sealed joint between a tubular body and a closure that comprises disposing a charge of plastic sealmg substance in an annular groove in said closure; placing said closure carrying said charge upon said tubular body; reforming the grooved portion of said closure to extrude portions of said plastic charge from said groove into the space between the side wall of said body and that part of said closure opposite said wall to substantially fill sald space; and confining the extruded portion of said charge to said space.
44. The combination of a tubular body having a shoulder below its top edge, and a cover resting upon said shoulder and carrying plastic sealing substance, and sealing substance expelled therefrom into the space between said body and cover to seal the join therebetween. V
45. The invention claimed in claim 44 in which said shoulder is annular and confines said expelled sealing substance.
46. The combination of a tubular body having an internal annular shoulder below its top edge, and a cover resting upon said shoulder and closing said body at one end, said cover carrying sealing substance, and sealing substance expelled therefrom into the space between said body and cover above said shoulder to seal the joint about the peripheral portion of the cover.
47. The combination of a tubular body having an annular shoulder below its top edge, and a cover resting upon said shoulder and secured to said body and closing the same at one end, said cover carrying sealing substance adapted to be squeezed into the space adjacent said shoulder and between said body and cover to seal the joint about the peripheral edge of said cover.
