Description

1. GARDNER.
Flower-Brackets.
INVENTOR WITNE/SES "METERS, FnofumnoGRAPu ErrED STATES! AAfrEiwri Erica AND-REW J. GARDNER, or LEE, MAssAoEUsErrs.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWER-BRACKEETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,227, dated July 6, 1875 5 application tiled February 20, 1675.
Fig. 2 is a side view, part sectional, of the same; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
rlhls invention relates to improvements iu flower stands or brackets, wherein are employed one or more cross-arms, whereby a singleimain stein is made to support a number of cups or pots; and the nature of the ini vention and improvement consists in the novel construction of a joint for the crossarms and stem, whereby the former are removably attached to the latter, and are endowed with equal rigidity to that obtained when the said arms are Apermanently secured in place, thereby producing a bracket which may, at pleasure, be converted from a single stem, sustaining a single cup or pot, into one sustaining a number of the same, or the reverse, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. Y
In the annexed drawings, A designates the main stem of a Bower-bracket, sustaining upon its end a cup or platform, a, adapted to receive and hold a iiower pot or vase. The inner end of this stem is pivotally socketed into aV metallic plate, B, rigidly secured iu any suitable manner to a window-frame, or to the walls of a room or conservatory.4 By
`this means the bracket is capable of being vibrated into position for allowing the flowers sustained thereon to receive the light and heat of the sun, or to be removed therefrom into the shade as their needs may require. C designates a-metallic cross-arm, consisting of two stems, o, each supporting a cup or stand, c', which is removably applied and attached to stem A in the following manner, to wit.: A notch, D, of suitable length is cut longitudinally in the upper edge of stem A, the rear end d of which is vertical, and its front end, df, at an acute angle to the length of the said stem. Stems c, which are composed of nat metallic strips bent or cast in curves, are then united by means of a metaltic strip, e, of equal length to notch D, leaving a space between them equal to the width of stem A. Plate or strip e is then inserted into notch D,its front beveled endt' engaging in the angular rear end of the latter, and strips c fitting snugly againstl the lateral edges of the main stem A. Stem c is thus prevented from lateral or endwise displacemeut, and also from vertical vibration upon its joint with the main stem. With a view to guarding still further against displacement of any kind, a pin, p, preferably of cylindrical form, but which may, however, be of prismatic or rectangular shape, is erected in notch D, and is adapted to be received in a correspondingly-shaped hole, j, in plate e, and when thus engaged adds greatly to the strength and rigidity of the joint.
The line x m, Fig. l, is drawn to show that the center of gravity of the transverse brackets and their bar is very materially forward of the attachmentnotch D, or point of support, whereby the `brackets are held in position without the employment of a screw or equivaleut device, and at the same time are readily removable and replaceable.
The under side of stem A is provided with hooks h, from which I propose to hang flowerbaskets of wire-work.
I am aware that a bracket or movable support for plants, consisting of a swinging-arm pivoted toa suitable base, in combination with two or'more auxiliary arms or supports, pivoted to the main swinging-arm, has heretofore been employed, and I, therefore, lay no claim to such invention, which differs from mine in construction, and in having theauxiliary arms pivoted to the main swinging-arm, and not readily detachable therefrom, whereas in my invention the auxiliary arms are rigidly secured to the main swingingarm,'and by the construction may be readily removed when desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the main pivoted. arm A, having the attachmentnotch D, with central pin p and rea-r dovetail Wall d', of the hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence transverse cross bracket-bar C c, constructed of two Wltnesses.
entire with its center of gravity in front of the attachment-notch, and provided with a ANDREW J' GARDNER' corresponding perforated dovetail tenon, sub- Witnesses:
stantially as specified. D. R. HILL7 In testimony that I claim the above, I have S. V. HALSEY.
