This invention relates to foldable paper boxes and has particular reference to that type known as berryboxes, etc. 7
The object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of boxes of this character; to provide a blank which may be cut from stock such as cardboard or the like with a minimum of waste; to provide a blank which lends. itself to printing operations readily and which when folded to form a box, presents a smooth exterior surface for display ing the printed matter; to provide a blank and box which may be compactly. piled for shipment either in the blank or folded box o form; to provide a box of the folded blank type whereby a single integral blank is scored a of Figure 1,
particularly Figure and cut by a die or the like and then folded and glued to form sides, legs and a bottom section; to provide a blank which is so cut and scored {that substantial double ply reenforced corners are formed during the cutting operation and further to provide a' blank which is adapted to be folded and glued by machine operation. The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings in which: a
Figure 1 is a perspective view'of thepaper' box when complete Figure 2 is a plan view of the blankfrom "which the paper box is formed, a v
Figure 3 is an enlarged cross section of one corner of the box taken .onthe line TIL-IE is an'enlarge'd cross section of-one Figure 4 box taken on the line IV-IV corner of the of. Figure 1', i I J9 Figure 5 is a perspective view of. one corner of the box showingthe position of the corner member and the sides just fore t e folding orassemblin operation is co pleted. Referring to the rawings,jin de ail, and
' 2, which is a plan'view of the blank from which. the box is'formed, A indicates the bottom portion of the box, 2, 3, 4 and 5 the side sectionsan'd 6, 7, 8 and 9 the corner members. v These members serve three functions: First that of reenforcing and strengthening the corners of the box, when folded and assembled as shown in Figure 1; secondly that of receiving the glue or adhesive whic secures the .corners of the box and third: that of forming extensions or legs whereby the hex is supported. The blank is substantially sqiiare in'shape and may be cut with standard dies or'the like irom paper glued and assembled by Figure 5. Glue is applie'don stock, such as cardboard, etc. During the same operation, the bottom formed by scoring the blank along the dotted l1nes indicated at 10. These scorg lines also form the lower edges of the side sections 2-, 3,
portion A is 4 and 5. The cornermembers 6,7, 8-and 9 are out along the lines indicated at 11-'-11-, 12-12, Iii-13: and l t-"14. The cut' se'ctions 121 2 are-substantially parallel and at right angles to the cut section-11 and forms the legs generally indicated'at 15:" The cut sections 13 are on a flare or-angle with rela-- tion to thecut sections 12 and thecut sec-- tions 14 are substantially-at: right angles to the cut-sections 12 so as to form-overlapping; flaps '16 whereby the corners of the box are reenforced and secured.
' The corner members arefcentrally'scored alonglthescore lines indicatedat 17 and scores are also formed atzthe points indicated at 18-48 and 19-+-19.- Tie strips-20am thus formed between thecornefr sections and 4 the side sections which retains the corner; members in positionwhile the paper stock is in a blank state andcalso during the folding";
and gluing operation as 'wi ll,hereinafter, be descrlbedr" In actual operation, the'bl'ank is folded, machine operations, ut as the machine per se scription thereof .is thou sufiiceth to saythat and 5 are bent upwardly to assume the position shown inFigures 1 and 5 by: bending them on th'escore-lines 10.- During the up ward bending of the side sections,the corner sections 6', 7 8 and 9. are also bent '-u wardly and theyare, at the same time, bent i e' y on the score surface of the =cornermembers, as indicated by stipplin at 22/111 Figure5 andwhen the corner mem 'ers are .forced against theends of I the side sections, :the exterior ongitw. the central score lines 17 and also lines 18 and 19,-as clearly shown in the exterior ea v will form the subject'matter' of a separateaplplication, a dc tunnecessary, the si 4 9 sections 2,. 3, I
surfaces of I i the corner members and theinner surfaces of project during thei-foldin the le 15. Theseiopenmgs -also Serve another at 23, through which the lowerends of the corner members *OPGIBIJOD to form' ction, to-w it or permitting a the side sections unite and the assembling --certain amount of ventilation which is more or less essential when certain kinds of fruits are being packed and shipped. Further ventil'ation ma be obtained. by slotting the sides of the box ut as this is common, illustration thereof has been eliminated.
. When asquare box such as. shown in Fig- 1 ure 1 is being. made, the blankprovided will fl'be substantially square in outline. If a line willbesu stantially hexagonal, that is,- theinvention isby 'no means limited :to a square slhapedbox, as it is obvious from the drawings submitted that hexagonal-shaped boxes and the-like may be obtained by slighthexagonal-s'ha ed box is employed,.the out- ;ily changing the shape of the blank; in any instance, it' willlbe noted that the blank maybecut from stock withaminimum of waste I and that comparatively simple dies may-.be
employed as. stripping and punching operations are entirely eliminatedwhen forming blanks such as here illustrated. Economy of material is thus obtained, die costs and bottom o maintenance is also reduced." .The-box obtained is materiall Y r'eenforced'by the corner members. and'lis rther reenforc'ed by the glueinte osed between the surface of-the ends of t e side sections and. the exterior surfaces'of the-corner'fsec'ti-ons'. The supporting legs projecting below the material and stock and'without waste and ventilatin openings are formed in'the bot.-
tOmwhic srkmitting the legs to protrude. A box of this also-s'erve the function of percharacter lends itself readily to machine op' erat-ions' thereby further reducing. costs and pact 'assem led condition. ,All surfaces formed the box also lends itself to nesting and comiling'both 'inthe blank and .in the are smooth and unobstructed and as such ma be printed and the printed matter may be displayed to advantage. While certain featuresof the-present invention aremore or less specifically described,
I wis h it understood thatvariousv changes may be resorted to within the scope of the appended-claims. Simila'rlythat the matemils and finishes-fofthe-several parts employed may besuch as the manufacturer inayg-decide or varying conditions or uses may demand.
Having thus described my invention, what the box are formed from the same I (laim and desire to secure by LettersPaten 1s y 1. device of the character described, comprising a single sheet of cardboard, said sheet being scored to form a solid ottom' sectlon and a plurality of integral 'si e and comer sections, said side sections adapted to be folded-upwardly when forming a box ,and said corner sections being partialy cut and integrally connected at the u per end with the 'side sections adapted to lib folded over the ends of the side sections to form .reenforced corners, the lower ends of the corner sections being extended through the cuts, to form projecting supporting legs.
2. A device of the character described, 1
comprising a single sheet of cardboard, said sheet being scored to. form a solid bottom section and a plurality of integral side and corner sections, said side sections adapted to be folded upwardly when forming a box and said corner sections bein partially cut and integrally. connected at t e upper ends of the side sections the integral portions being doubled and folded over the ends of the side sections, to form ,reenforced corners and the lower ends of the corner'sections projecting through the blank from the interior an comprising a single sheet of cardboard scored to orm a solid bottom section and a plurality. of integral side and corner secextending below the bottom sec- 'tion to form supporting legs,
3. A device of the character described,
tions, .the side sections being. folded up- 1 wardlywhen forming a box and said corner sections being partially cut and integrally connected at the upper ends with the side sections, the integral connecting portions being doubled and folded over the ends of the side sections to form reinforcing corners, and" the lower ends of the corner sections projecting through the blank from the intebe secured to the same. ,1-
