acter whereby a resilient member Vis disposed between a retaining pin and an adjacent side of a draft'sill upon'a draft key whereby when the coupling key is shifted in a certain longitudinal direction the retaining key will yieldably bear against the adjacent side of the draft'sill and be prevented by a yieldable member from being sheared from con-V nection with the draft key when the cars with which the draft key is i associated round a .curve in a' direction t-o shiftv the draft key in said` certain longitudinal' direction. 5
@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consistsv in the combination and-arrangement of parts to be Vhereinafter described and claimed.' i Y, n
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying ydrawings illustrating the preferred formof my invention, and in which: l i
Fig. 1 is ,a transverse. Ysection taken through a coupler, illustrating my. improvei meut applied thereto. f
Fig. 2 is a detailV transverse section on lthe line 2 2 of Fig. 1. .Y
Fig. 3 is a side elevation ofthe fastening key for the draft key, and
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the draft key..V
Referring vmore particularly to the draw-` ing, the numeral 1 indicates the center draft sills between which the draft yoke 2 is mounted. The draft 'yoke 2 is adapted to Areceive the draw bar 3 and this draw bar, draft yoke a1id|.d1'aft sills are provided. with transverse aligned openings i` adapted tok receive my improved draft key 5.
This draft key -5 is preferably at, as shown in Fig. 4, and has formed at one end thereof a head '6. The otherl end of the draft key is tapered, as at 7, topermit the same' to be readilyV insertedthrough the aligned openings 4. V'Ihis draft key 5 is retained in position-through the medium of a U-shaped retaining pin 8. The limb por-V tions of this retaining keyS pass through v of retaining the Vpin 8 the openings formed in the 'tapered "end" portion 7 of the draft key and the outer end portions vof thelimbs of the retaining ypin are bent laterally asiat 10 for-,the purpose in the y position illus tratedl in Fig. 1. 7
AsV shown in washer 11 is positioned upon the draft key 5 inwardly of the retaining pin 8 and disposed between this washer 11 and the ad- Fig. l'uof the drawing a jacent side ofthe draft sills is a Vspringy 'Y member 12.y This spring member 12 is of lation with the adjacentv side ofthe draft sills 1.` Y Y `While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention vinto effect, this is capable of variations and lmodification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, there` fore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modi-v fications f as come within the scope vof the appended claims. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'is:
' end portion lof the draft key, and yieldable means disposed between the retaining key and adjacentkwall of the draft sill.
2. In combination al draftkey defining a head at one end, a removable retaining key for the Vdraft key, and a spring member carried bythe draft key and serving to rei lieve the retaining key of undue strain.
3. In a ydevice of the character described, the combination with a draft silk-of` a draft key extending transverselyof the draft sill and having a head formed on one end portion thereof, aretaining key carried bythe other the expansive typefand serves in its principal end of the drnii key1 :l wnlier 'rnrried in' the `(iininiie-v ndjeeent the retainingr key, und e coil spring carried by the draft' key :rnd arranged between the insher end 7the retaininglr key.
