pins, picking up type, washers, nuts, bolts mention.- Y f V The main object Vof my invention isthe lprovision of a tool which can be operated withease and readiness to quickly grasp and retain an object and.Y which can be'quickly operated to release the object ory article.
Another object of nay-invention is the prol vision of a tool which will perform'the'tunction for which itis intended in a, practical and eflicient manner and which can be` manuactured and sold at such a small price as to make its use highly desirable-and necessary.
71th these objects inl view my invention consistsv of a tool ot the character and for the purposes stated embodying novel tea'- tures ot construction and combination otV i parts, substantially as describedand claimed andas shown `in the accompanying drawing, in which; y n n y n lFigure 1 represents side elevation of a pick up tool'constructed in accordance with` and embodying my invention.
Figure .2 represents a lcentral, sectional View of the tool, `and f Figures 3, 4, 5,' 6 and representV detail viewsI of diierent forms of'spring jaws adapted for use inconiiection with my tool,
Figure winged'nut and associated part-s.
My invention is of extremely simple con struction and consists ot the casing or barrel 1, closed at one end 2, provided with a pair of ringer receiving loops 3, and having the open' end 4, in which is mounted thecap 5 having a passage 6 and a tapered nose v7.
' In the casing and mounted `toznfiove inthe kopening 8, of the barrel is the push rod' 9,.
formed atits outer vend withafbuttonlO, and terminating in the lower stem 11, which.v passes through the ypassage 6 ot the cap, and around said stem is placed the coiled spring` 12, whose ends bear'upon the cap'at 13 `and upon the disk v14, mounted upon Athe rod or stem, and bearing against the pin 15, which is movable and guided in the slot 16, and has secured thereto the thumb nut 17.
From this construction itv will be noted that the action of thecoiled spring movesthe rod outward thedistance of the slotted open represents a detail View ot the ing and pressure upon the button carried by the push rod, projects the end of thev'stem through the opening in the cap, causing it to engagethe spring'jaws 18, at the intermediate tapered portions 19, the effect of which is toi'nove the jawsto open position, las shown in Figures 1 and 2 andiupon re lease ot pressure upon the push rod the stem retracts and the jaws by vreason of their spring action close inwardly into the path ot the opening or passage in the cap.
vThe jaws are madein pairs to provide a complete set for various purposes and in all cases the jaws lconsist'of the curved inner Vportion 20, the intermediate inclined portion 21 and the spring jaws proper 22, in each case the'inner curved portion fitting to conformY with the barrel and having each a screw receiving opening 23, to receive the Y screws 24, such screw receiving opening hav- `ing a communicating slot23, which permits the application and removal of the jaws when 'found necessary. l L l jIn'Figures 3, 1, 5, 6' and7, is shown a series of jaws which accompany the'tool and which consists essentiallyV ot thesame detailsot construction, some having curved, others angular and others 'flat engaging portions adapting them for variouspurposes where they would fit Vthe object orV article which Vis to be removed or applied.V` I
The operation and advantages of my tool .will be readily understood from the draw- V ying and description and lfurther comment Vis Vdeemed unnecessary and it will be evident that thetool will fill a long telt want in a practical and efficient manner.
I claimt-4 y 1.A A tool ofthe character and for the purpose described, consisting of a barrel, a
perforatedl tapering nose in one endV of theV barrel, ya spring retracted plunger playing in the Vbarrel,a stemon the plunger and play- I ing through the tapered nose, and alpair of spring jaws on the nose and adapted to be opened by the action of said stem.
