UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

BECEPTACLE.
application led August 12, 1925. Serial No. 49,722;
This invention relates to improvements in the fancy or deluxe type of receptacles used for packaging confections. This type of receptacle is. purchased by retail dealers preceding holidays Easter, Thanksgiving Day, and valso preceding Mothers Day, the'number of such receptacles purchased by each dealer bem based upon an estimateof the demand o his patrons. An overestimate by the dealer results in leaving on his hands a quantity of receptacles which lie cannot dispose of for approximately one year and an underestlmate results in the loss lof sales due to f shortage of'receptacles. As this class of store-d receptacles to' render them unsalable.
The object of the present invention is to provide receptacles of the type above mentioned which are equally well adapted for a plurality of holiday sales, thus enabling the dealer to stock a larger number thereof with the resultant saving 1n cost for quantity purchase and insuring an ample supply to meet market demands or any one o the several holidays for which the receptacle is adapted.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 isa perspective view of a receptacle constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fi 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of t e same with the top plate removed.
The receptacle comprises the cylindrical box 1 and cover 2, which, except as hereinafter fully pointed out, are of ordinary construction when composed of paper, it being obvious, of course, that the invention may be also embodied in receptacles made of sheet metal or other materials.
The cover l2 of the receptacle comprises the head indicated by reference character 2, the same being preferably slightly dished and suitably secured or joined along its peripheral edge portion to the annular ange or wall element 3. The latter is so constructed as to provide an annular flange 4 projecting above the peripheral edge portion of the plate 2. In the instance of a paper receptacle this is referably accomplished by making the wa portion 3 of two such as Christmas, A
layers of suitable paper cemented together, the outer layer projecting above the inner to provide said flange 4.
y Secured or joined along its circumferential edge or edge portion to the -liange' 4 above the level of the peripheral edge of the head 2 is a second head 5 which is here shown as composed of two layers of material and is preferably dished to greater depththan the head 2 so as to provide an air chamber 6 between said heads 2 and 5 which is adapted to receive a spacing and cushioning member 7 consisting, for example, of a piece of corrugated strawboard or the like which is disposed centrally of said chamber 6.
The outer surface of the head 5 is divided into a plurality of preferably equal segmental areas 8, 9 and 10, respectively, the number of said areas being a mere matter of selection. Each ofsaid areas isadapted to contain a pictorial representation or design appropriate to respectivel different holidays such as Christmas, -Faster and Thanksgiving.
Rotatably mounted upon the head 5 is a similarly dished plate 11 of substantially the same diameter as said head 5, the peripheral edge of said plate 11 being disposed below the upper edge of the flange 4. Preferably a pivot member 12 is passed centrally through the head 5 and plate 11. The latter is provided With an opening 13 of preferably fanciful shape and of an area less than that 'of a segmental area 8, 9 or 10, said opening being dis osed between the center and peripheral e ge of the plate 11 and the latter capable of being disposed so that the pictorial representation covering any one of said areas is exposed to view through said opening 13 which may be bordered by ornamentation to constitute the representation of a frame for the particular ornamentation so exposed to view.
If, previousl to positioning the opening 13 to become disposed within a selected segmental area 8, 9 or 10, a Adaub of glue or cement is disposed upon one or both the other of said areas, the plate 11 will become non-rotatable relatively to the head 5 by the purchaser or recipient of the receptacle and the adaptability of the latter to various holiday uses thus maintained unknown to said recipient except upon destruction of the cover. The use of such cement also obviates the necessity of employing the pivot vention is embodied in a sheet metal recep element 12 though the latter is preferably employed to prevent dislodgment of the plate lllbefore sale of the receptacle by the dealer.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the said receptacle constitutes an economic article which is very advantageous to retail dealers in the several respects first above pointed out and is equally advantageous to the manufacturer of the receptacles by reason of requiring fewer pictorial representations of the full area of the box cover and appropriate to the several seasons and in many other respects which fully if not more than oii'set the greater cost of construction. It will further be obvious that if the intacle or in a receptacle composed of an initially plastic or molten material, the structural details will be easily changed and varied by any person skilled in the art without other direction than is afforded by the foregoing specification 'and the drawings constituting a part thereof.
I claim as my invention 1. A receptacle of the kind specified including a cover presenting a dished circular head, the outer face of the latter divided relatively to said head and being provided with an opening positioned to expose to view substantially all of any one of' said segmental fields or areas.
2. A receptacle of the kind specified including a cover presenting a dished circular head, the outer face of the latter divided into a plurality f equal segmental areas or fields each containing a pictorial representation or design, an annular flange bordering said head, and a similarly dished circular plate covering said outer face of said dished head and having its circumferential edge confined by vsaid flange, said plate rotatable 'relatively to said head and being provided with an opening positioned to expose to view substantially all of any -one of said segmental fields o r areas, and
a pivot element connecting said head and.l
said plate.
