This invention is an improvement on the 3 machine described and shown Yin, United States Patent no. 696 218, March th, 1902,
to lvhitehurst, et a], This patent is entitled Labelling "inachine though the machine which it describes-end shows might more properly be termed awrapper than a labeller'in that it Wraps and folds a paper cover which entirely enclosesthe cansboth as to their cylindrical sides and the flat endsjas distinguished from the labelling machines which merely'roll or Wind a strip of paper which serves asa lahel about the cylindrical surfaces of thecansr I The machine referred to operates somewhat after the-mannerof alabellerin that a the cylindrical cans are rolledthroughthemachine by contact Withan endless beltjand as they pass, each can picks u a sheet of paper or wrapper, which is Wound or rolled about the cylindrical surfaceasthe can rolls forward along the Ways; but the Wrapper. difi'ers from theaordinary laheller in that the I p thea isofthe pre'sse'r roller forming part fof my irnprovernent,

The delivery roller 4 and the presser roller 25 are ofinterest'. These rollers are formed "with a wood or metal body, or. center portion A4, 45. Referring to thercspective rollers, which may be formed on or secured to the zrespective spindles 20 and 26, the body or made of a single, piece of matcrial, in that i there 'is no tendency for it toerack or break into segments after the manner'of such rollers. -The'ou-tcrca's1ng or jacket hasnot only great flexibility but" considerable tensile strength, and; the" 111110.1 f.portion having greater resistive block rubberi Having particularpreference to Figure 4-, it will be noted that the-'pifesser roller is of increa'sdflizimeter'or' bellied out centrally,
qualities-g than ordinary enlarged portion of'the corebeing indicated by reference eharaeter'48, and the enlarged portion of tllQOlllTBl diameter-by reference character 50, It will befrirt-her noted from Fi ures that r the enlarged portion' of the "roller," corresponds in length,- measured in the direction of the z i:-iis,*to'-the: diameter of thedepressed portions of the "cans' bein'g treated," tliouglrthe machine: is capable of treating can's, having aconsiderable varia tionas-to'the 'd-iameter, the import-ant point andifor the greaterportioniof its lengtlnthe ill being that the enlarged or bellied portion of the rollers '25, in treating the cans with the depressed or hollowed out head portions, shall enter into the hollows or depressions, pressing and setting the folded edges of the Wrappers 56 which cover the ends of the cans, it being understood that the edge portions of the wrappers be coat-ed with paste or cement so that one function oi the presser rolls is not only to press the creases in the materials, completing the folding 0P1 oration but to press" the layers of paper together, giving the paste or cement an opportnuity to set. The presser rollsthus formed and mounted, enter and completely fill and contact with the entire end surfaces of the cans, engaging the entire area of the depressed portion, even though there be some considerable variation in the diameters of the cans Wrapped, the variation being provided for by the flexibility or" the roller, and further the cans dwell for a short time between the presser rollers providing for setting of the cement andcreases.
In the operation of the machine the cans are led to the Ways in any suitable manner, a supply of Wrappers being maintained in or directly beneath the path of the cans as described inthe patent above cited, or in any preferred Way. The cans may be touched with adhesive or other ise caused to take up the Wrappers as they pass, the rolling motion of the cans causing the Wrappers to be rolled about thecans. In this operation Wrappers are, as aforesaid, provided which are of greater Width than the length of the cans, so that when the W ppcrs are rolled about the cans as 'd scribed, the edge portions project beyond the cans. These edge portions are folded in by contactvvith the plows 6, see Figure 1, immediately following which operation thecans are raised by passing over the hill 19 on the pivoted support 10, in \vhicli portion of their path they are held between the short tightdelivery belt 3, and the support it), w ch is spring-pressed by the springs 13,. as pre viously described, and the action of the delivery belt 3 carries, and to some extent,
forces the cans into the bite of the delivery 7 having enlarged central portion adapted I to receive and engage the. cans, pressing rollers l which engage the cans by their end surfaces, pressing them to suclrextent as the straight formation of the rollers permits and holding them in the elevated position to which they are raised bythe support 10, so that while gripped by the rollers they are out of contactvf'ithfthe support and the Ways, and thus relieved trorn any "tend y to rotate as thebelt 3 turns upward immediately beyond the bite oi the delivery rollers 4. The delivery rollers & in turn deliver the cans thus Wrapped one at a time to the bite of thepresser' rollers 25, Which as aforesaid enter the depressions in the llGllOlV-a headed cans, engaging the entire surface of the hollowed portion or the Wrapper folded over the same, completing the pressing operation asto the folded ends o l the Wrappers, and setting the cement.
It is further of interest that the resser rolls, not being driven, have no feeding or delivery actioinso that each can dwells in the bite of these rollers until it is pushed forward by the can next delivered by the delivery rollers. This dwell gives an opportunity for the paste to set, and completes pressing of the folded portion. The yielding action of the rollers provides for a variation of the length of the cans, and equalizesthe pressure applied. It is of interest that the short 7 delivery beltfl is placed slightly above the level of the feed belt :2, engaging the as they are raised on the hill 19 of the support with considerable tension,1nore than be applied by the longer belt and deliveredahnost positively by the action of the belt and the support intothe bite of the delivery rollers l.
1 have thus described specifically and in detail a portion of a inachine embodying my invention in the preferred form, in order that the nature and operation of the same having their axes. vertically placechi and means for rotating said rollers to press the Wrapper on the ends of the cans and deliver the cans. v i
