the body without being objectionably con spiouo us.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,-
Figure 1 is a side view of a figure toy embodying the invention. v
Figure 2 is a front view of the same, the platform being shown in section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows in perspective and on a larger scale, the standard, a portion of the platform, and the means actuated by the running gear for oscillating the legs.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, 12 designates a platform, preferably of sheet metal, provided with a marginal flange 13. The platform is provided with running gear which includes axles M and 15, journaled inbearings in the flange 13, and traction wheels 16 on the axles. The traction wheels of the rear axle 14;, which I call the operating axle, are fixed to said axle to rotate it. To the platform is fixed an upstanding standard, preferably composed of a single piece of pressed sheet metal and. including a channeled portion 16, fixed at its lower end to the platform and provided with seats 17 at its upper end for a purpose hereinafter described, anda shank portion 18, projecting upward from the channeled portion.
The figure includes a body portion- 19, bearing at its lower end on the seats 17, and at its back on the shank portion 18, the latter being attached to the body portion by fasteners, indicated at 20.
The figure also includes legs 21, pivoted at 22, to the lower end portion of the body, and adapted to oscillate in parallel planes.
1 provide means actuated by the rotation of the operating axle 1 1', for oscillating the legs simultaneously in opposite directions,
l hereby producing the effect. of goosestep marching.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention here shown, I organize said means as next described.
The axle 14: is provided with a crank 23, revolved by the rotation of the axle. The
legs are provided with pivoted rearwardly projecting arms 24. A rocking compound crank-shaft is j ournaled in bearings 25 (Figure 3), in the flanges or wings of the channeled portion 16 of the standard. Said compound crank-shaft includes the alined portions 26, journaled in thebearings 25, a
The arrangement, clearly shown by the drawings, is such that when the axle lt'is rotated, the compound crank-shaft is rocked in its bearings 25, so that the legs 21 are oscillated simultaneously in opposite directions, marching.
The channeled form of the standard portion 16 imparts suitable stiffness thereto, so that said portion, and its seats 17, firmly support the body '19, without being objectionably bulky and conspicuous. j
The lower endof the standard is preferably provided with integral tongues 30, which are inserted in slots formed for their reception in the platform 12, and bent outward against the under surface'of the platform, as shown by Figure 2, and by dotted lines in Figure 3. p
The platform is provided with an opening 32 (Figure 3), permitting the revolution of the crank 23 and the necessary endwise movements of therod 28.
I claim: LA toy soldier comprising a plat-form,
running gears supporting the platform and including a crank axle and traction wheels fixed thereto, an upstanding support fixed to the platform, a soldier figure body fixed in upright position to said standard, two legs pivotedto the lower end of said body, each leg consisting of a rigid unjointed piece, a rock shaft oscillatively mounted in the stand- 2rd, and having three cranks, separate con necting arms pivoted to two of said cranks and to the legs, respectively, and a connecting rod between the third rock shaft crank and theaxle crank; said rock shaft being to produce the effect of goose-step oscillated byrotation of the, axle audits leg-connected crankbeing disposed to swing the legs simultaneously in directions-op posite to one anothersimulatingthe leg movements of a soldier in marohing with the goose step.
2. In a figure toy, a base structure, a stand ard secured to and rising from said structure tor med of pressedwsheet metal having a aflixed my 15 EDWIN V. BABBITT.
