Application filer]. Fe ruary which is most suitable fOlFtllG prevailing weather or wind. Fol-example, when there is a strong wind blowinguit is desirable that the sail used be ofaa flat type, that is, one which will h'ave only a slight curvature when filled, whereas in alight wind it is usual to employya sail the curvature or draught of which, when filled, is greater than that of the so-cal-led fiat sail. a
Also, the connections, which are at present being used to join the lower: endofthe fore edge of a mainsail to the mast, aresuch that it is very diiiicult attimes to maintainthe full lengthof said fore edge in parallel relation to the mast. l 1 .i
An object of' the present invention is to provide a mounting of siin ale" and practical construction by means of which sail may be adjusted relative to its-mast and boomto vary the curvature'of the sail, "when filled, thereby avoiding the necessity of changing from one sail to another to meet existing weather conditions.
Another object is in providing an adjustment for the sail whereby the fore edge and foot or lower edge thereof throughout their entire lengths inay belzept in parallel relation to the mastand hooni,respectively, thus insuring-the proper positioninghf the sail under all conditions. 4 a
A further object is the provisionflof an improved mountingwhich will allow of -free swinging movements of the boom both 'verti cally and laterally relative to the mast.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following-detail description, when talrenin connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment oftheinventive idea.
. In the'drawing 1 s 1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mounting constructed in accordance with the invention and shown in its operative position;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of 'themountingwith the sail unattachedyand 1 i ure- 3 is a sect' Figure 1.
{OH entire line of 5, 1927. Serial No. 166,055.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 4: indicates the mast of a sailing boat and 5 the usual boom to which the inainsail 6 is connected.
The mounting of the present invention oonsists'of a bracket 7 securedto the mast 4 and having a bearing portion 8 provided with an opening 9 theretlnough, which opening is disposed co-extensively with the mast. A supporting member 10, in the form of an arm, is provided at one end with a lateral extension 11 which is mounted in'the ope'ning 9cso as to form a pivot for the member 10 to pernnt of the sainet'o be swung about a vertical axis and laterally with respectto the mast 4. The other end of the support 10 is also providedwith'alateral extension 12terminating at its extremity in aney'e 13 through which isextended a pin 14: in the form of a bolt, the eye bein g'engaged with the intermediate portion of said pin. To connect the boom 5 with the pin in order that th'e former may have vertical movements about said pin as a pivot, there is provided ayoke 15 having a screw threaded shank 16 which is screwed into the end of the boom 5,'as shownin Figure 1. Thus from the foregoing description it will be apparent that through the pivotal connection of the support lOWllZli the mast and the similar connection of the boom with said support, said boom will have pivotal movements both laterally and vertically relative to said mast.
The mounting further comprises a means 7 for adjus'tahly securing the sail 6 thereto, said means consisting of'the opposed clamping-plates 17, adjacent ends of which are provided with openings for receiving'the pin 14 with the plates arranged on opposite sides of the eye 13 and between the same and the arms of the yoke 15. The opposite ends of said plates are likewise provided with openings for receiving a pin 18 similar to the pin 14, which pin 18 also extends through an eye 19 formed upon the extremity of the extension 11. The plates 17 are capable of movements toward and away from each other on the pins 14 and 18 so asto be capable of clampingtherebetween the end 20 of a sail attaching member 21. The inner surfaces of the plates andthe surfaces of said end 20 are milled or serrated so that when the clamping plates are engaged with saideiid' the same will be seem-91 held to 'g'e'tl'ie'r after the wing nut "22 has been threaded upon the bolt 23 and engaged with part thereof, may be caused to extend coextensively with the boom 5.
The intermediate portion of the attaching member 21 is disposed transversely to the end 20 and has extending therefrom in a direction opposite to the end 20 an otl'set end 26 terminating at its extremity in the yoke 27 between the arms of which is adapted to be disposed the adjacent corner of the sail 6. In order to connect said sail to the yoke the arms of the latter are provided with opposed openings 28 into one of which projects a pin 29. A locking bolt 30 is extended through the openings 28 and has therein a bayonetslot 31 in which is engageable the end of the pin 29. The bolt is provided with ahead 32 which is capable of being given a quarter. turn so that the pin 29 will engage in-the longitudinal portion of the slot- 31 and'thus permit of a partial withdrawal of thebolt from the yoke, thereby allowing of the insertion of the corner ofthe sail between the arms of said yoke. The bolt is then replaced to its locking position, extend ing through an eye 33 formed in the sail so that the sailwill be attached tothe member .21. p In orderto insure the locking bolt remaining in its locking position with the head 32extending downwardly, ashort length of V rope (not shown) may be tied to the head vious that said member 21 may be adjusted longitudinally of the plates 17 and away from the mast 4 to vary, within certain limits, the curvature which the sail 6' will assume when it is filled.
If desired, there may be interposed between the top of the bearing 8 and the lower edges of the plates 17 a split washer 35 which [encircles the extension 11 to take up wear between the parts.
What is claimed is: 1.
