Application filed February 9,1927. Serial No. 167,034.-
This invention aims to provide a novel building unit made ip of hollow tiles, novel means being provided for holdingthe tiles together, and for holding a partition between the tiles, so that dead air'spaces will bemade in the wall of which the tiles form a part.
Another object of the invention is so to locate the ties which unite the tiles, that the ties will afiord a mortar clinch for a stucco facing that is placed on the tiles, the ties holding the tilestogether, the ties retaining the partition, and certain of the ties serving, also, to support the mold form or frame wherein the stucco facing is fastened.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve. generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings V Figure 1 shows in perspective, a device constructed in accordance withthe invention, the stucco facing being omitted;
, Figure 2 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1, the mold frame being in place Figure 3 is a top plan of the structure shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a transverse section on the line 4:'4: of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the complete article;
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the partition;
Figure 7 is a perspective disclosing a modification.
In Figures 1 to 5, a pair of hollow mem hers, such as tiles 1 and 2, are held together by ties 3, l, 5 and 6, the ties having hooks 7 i at their ends, the aforesaid hooks engaging the outer ends of the tiles 1 and 2, to hold the inner ends of the tiles on a partition 8, which may be composed, as shown in Figure 6, of wire cloth 9 embedded in asphalt 1.0. A difierent kind of a partition, however, may be used, and some of the ties 3-4-5-6 may be omitted at the will of the builder.
The ties 3-l 5.-6 not only hold the tiles 1 and 2 together endwise, but, also, they engage the edges of'the partition 8 and prevent the partition from shifting transversely: the tiesalso prevent the tiles 1 2 from shifting crosswise.
The ties 4: may be used to support a mold frame 11 for the reception of a plastic stucco facing 12 whichis applied to the surfaces 14 of the tiles 1 and 2. The ties 4 support the upper edge of the frame 11 far enough above the surfaces 14 so as to regulate the thickness of the stucco facing 12, when the facing is struck off along the upper edge of the frame 11. The ties 3 have an additional function, in that they afiord a mortar clinch for the stucco facing 12.
In the form shown in Figure 7, the tiles are marked by the numeral 15, and the partition is shown at 16. The means for connecting the hollow members or tiles 15 to hold their inner ends in engagement with the partition 16, and to hold both the hollow members and the partition against shifting transversely, is in the form of a pad or band 17 of metal, canvas, or the like, attached to the members 15 by hot asphaltum. The stucco facing shown at 12 in Figure 5 may be I applied to the form shown in Figure 7.
If desired, the article may be permitted to stand on moist soil whilst the plastic facing 12 is setting: and in this way, advantage may be taken of the natural moisture in the soil, to retard the setting and to prevent too rapid a setting.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of hollow members, a partition disposed between the inner ends of the hollow members, tiesextended along the outer surfaces of the hollow members and engaged with the outer members, and a plastic facing upon the hollow members; the ties serving to hold the hollow members against relative transverse movement and to hold the inner ends of the hollow members in engagement with the partition, the ties cooperating with the edges of the partition to prevent the partition from shifting transversely between the inner ends of the hollow members, divers of the ties being enga 'ed with the plastic material to form a clinch therefor, and others of the ties being so located with respect to the facing-receiving surfaces of the hollow members as to hold a mold frame elevated far enough with respect to said surfaces so that the frame will bound and retain the plastic material.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of hollow members, a partition disposed between the inner ends of the hollow members, and means for connecting, the hollow members to hold their inner ends in engagement with the partition and to hold the hollow members against relative transverse movement, said means engaging the edges of the partition to hold it from shifting transversely between the inner ends of the hollow members.
-" A device of the class described comprising a pair of hollow members, a partition disposed between the inner ends of the hollow members, and means for connectin the hollow members to hold their inner en s in engagement with the partition and to hold the hollow members against relative transverse movement, said means engaging the edges of the partition to hold it from shiftin'g transversely between the inner ends of the hollow members, the partition being made of wire cloth and asphalt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signatnre.
DENNIS WILLIAM DALEY.
