"For the purpose of adjusting the vertical position of the bits in order that sullicicnt metal may be projectedV into the path oit the moving dies 20 to. lill out completely the points of the bits `which are to be formed, I provide a sliding Wedge 30 having an inclined surface 3l upon which the lov-Jer end of a blank 32de adapted to rest, the Wet member 30 having a rack 35 tormedat the bottom thereof and being longitudinally movable by a toothed sector 3a secured on a roch shaft/35 toi-Which suitable adjusting and locking means (not shown) is provided.
It Will be noted from Figure 2 that thevvedgek member constitutes an interlocking means for preventing possible lateral slipping of the bit holder during the course of sharpening.
The mode of operation of my improved mechanism will be readily apparent. Assume that the. slide 26A is in its proper position with the slot 27 therein in alineinent with the groove between the dies 20 and that the wedge member 30 has been moved to lock the member 26 against movement. A heated blank is then slipped into the slot/27 and slides to rest upon the inclined surface 31 of the wedge member 30. The pulley 6 is then caused to rotate the crank shaft 5 in anysuitable manner and the lower surfaces of the dies 2() engage the end portion of the drill bit or blank if the slidin wedge 30 has been suitably adjusted'by tie operator to bring this about. "Ihe dies 20 will then roll the projecting material out into such form as to completely iill up the groove between the dies 2O as this groove moves along and will also draw out the point of the blank to a shape as indicated in Fig. 2. The upper portions 22 of the dies QO'are so close together that no substantial escape of material between the dies is possible and, by virtue of the fact that a. plurality of dies are used, any jamming action of the metal is entirely impossible.
y While I have in this application specifically deseribed one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spiiit or the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A forging machine for forming the cutting ends of cutter bits comprising a raised die against which the front face of the bit is to be formed, die means including a plurality of cooperating rooveddies for forming substantia-lly simu taneously the other surfaces of the cutting ends, said raised 'die being adapted to project within the grooves in said other dies, and means for causing relative movement between said projecting die and said grooved dies to effect forming of said cutting end.
2. A forging machine for forming the cutting ends of cutter bits comprising a projecting die against which the front face of the bit is to be formed, die means including a plurality of grooved rotatable dies for forming substantially simultaneously the other surfaces of the cutting end, said projecting die being adapted to extend within the grooves in said rotatable dies, and means for effecting relative movement between said projecting die and said rotatable dies to effect forming of said cutting end.
3. 'In a forging machine, a stationary pro-v jecting die, a pair of cooperating forming dies rotatableon parallel axes at opposite sides of said other die, said projecting die being adapted to extend between said other dies, and means for effecting movement of said rotatable dies relative to said projecting die.

5. In a cutter bit forging machine, a stationary raised die, a pair of cooperating grooved roller dies disposed on parallel axes and adapted to move in a straight path, means for supporting a bitblank at an acute angle relative to said path, and means for effecting movement of said roller dies relative to'said stationary die for forming the cutting end of the bit with clearance.

In a cutter bit forging machine, a projecting die having lateral surfaces and a supporting surface, a pair of dies each having a lateral surface cooperating with a lateral surface on said other die, said projecting die and said pair of dies being relatively movable, means for supporting a blank adjacent said projecting die and at an angle to the direction of said relative movement, and means for effecting relative movement between said projecting die and .said grooved dies to effect forming of the cutting end of the bit with clearance.
7. In a forging machine, a projecting die, a pair of cooperating dies arranged toact simultaneously on a work piece, said projecting die being adapted to extend between said other dies, and means for effecting relative movement between said projecting die and said pair of dies.
8. In a cutter bit forging machine, a projecting die, a pair of cooperating dies, said projecting die being adapted to extend be tween said other dies, a pivotal mounting for said cooperating dies, and means for effecting relative movement between said projecting die and said other dies to ei'ect forming of the cutting end of the bit.
9. A cutter bit forging machine comprising a projecting die against which the front face of the bit is to be formed, a plurality of cooperating ilicscooperating with said projecting die to form the other surfaces of said cutting portion, said projecting die heilig adapted to extend between said other dies, a pivotal mounting for said plurality of cooperating dies, and means for cti'ecting relative movement between said projecting dic and said other dies. 15. A cutter bit forging machine comprising a die against which the front face of a bit is to be formed, and a plurality of swingingly mounted dies cooperating therewith to form the other surfaces of said cutting portion, and means for causing relative movement between said dies.

24. A cutter bit forging machine comprising a blank holder and means for forming the lateral surfaces and cutting face of the cutting portion of a bit held thereby, said means including a raised die and a plurality of rotatable dies, the latter being adapted to form said surfaces between their peripheriesl and 'said raised die to project between said rotatable dies.

A cutter bit forging machine comprising a cutter bit blank holder and means for forming the cutting face andthe lateral surfaces of the cutting portion of a blank held thereby, said means including a raised die and a plurality of rotatable dies, and means for effecting relative movement between said rotatable dies and said raised die,. said raised die being adapted to project between said rotatable dies at a predetermined time in said relative movement whereby said surfaces may be formed between the peripheries of said rotatable dies.
26. A forging machine comprising a raised die to form the cutting face of a cutter bit,- and a plurality of rotatable dies adapted to form the lateral surfaces of a cutting portion of said bit between the peripheries of said rotatable dies.

A forging machine comprising means for holding the shank end of a cutter bit` dies for forging the lateral surfaces and cutting face of the bit portion of said blanks, one of said dies being adapted to extend upwardly between said other dies, and means for effecting relative movement between said dies in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of a blank mounted in said holding means thereby to squeeze laterallyv simultaneously between said other dies both sides of the bit portion during forging thereof.
28. A forging machine for forming the cutting portion of a cutter bit comprising a projecting die against which the front face of the bit is to be formed, and cooperating die means movable relative thereto and having lateral surfaces cooperating with the lateral surfaces of said projecting die for forming the other surfaces of the cutting portiom'said die means including a die rotatable on an axis which traces during movement a plane generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bit.
