My. invention relates to mining machines lit] for the electrical thereof;
An object of my invention is to provide an improved protective device for controller cover plates used on electric mining appara tus whereby the unauthorized removal of the same is prevented. A still more specifie object of my invention is to providean improved protective device for preventing the removal of cover plates used on electric mining machinesof the explosion proof type adapted for use in gaseous mines, whereby controlling apparatus the unauthorized removal of the same at the mine face min a gaseous ati'nosphere is prevented and the consequent possibiiity at an explosion caused by thearcing or sparking of the electrical contacts igniting the mine gas is eliminated. These and other objects and advantages will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown for purposes ofillustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the rear end of a mining machine embodying my improved device.
Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken substantially on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
In this illustrative construction i have shown a mining machine of the flexible fed type including a casing or frame 1 slidable on its bottom 2 on the mine bottom and adapted to be fed relative to the mine face to cut a kerf or slot therein by means of flexible feeding means not shown. The cutting and feeding mechanism may be of any approved type adapted to be driven by a suitable motor disposed in a casing 3, herein an electric motor, controlled by any suit-able electrical controlling mechanism, not shown, operated by a handle 4 suitably carried by the machine frame.
Formed in the machine frame is a chamber 5 in which the controlling apparatus disposed. This chamber 5 is herein provided with a closure member or plate 6 tightly held in position by means of bolts 7. To prevent the possibility of an unauthorized removal of the plate 6, I have also pro;
Serial lilo, 8511,6l8.
vided a member 8 which completely houses the closure member 6 thereby preventing access to the bolts 7. Suitably connected to the member 6 herein by bolt and nut connection 9 are also members 10 which are circularin shape and which insertable in apertures 11. in the memberS. Herein it will be noted that the members 10 are further provided with apertures 12 which are adapted to receive a rod 13 extending through openings in the cover member and provided with ahead 15 at one end and a locking member, herein in the form ofa lock 16, at the other end thereof.
The advantages of my improved device will be clearly evident as a result of the description given. After-the closure member 6 has been tightly securedin position, the rod 1?, is inserted through the apertures 12 and 14; in the members 10 and 8. rod is in position, it is locked therein by means of the lock 16. As a result, it will be noted that with the parts thus locked when the machine goes into the mine or into a gaseous part thereof access to the bolts 7 and subsequent removal of the plate 6 by anyone other than the properly authorized person provided with a key to the lock 16 is prevented.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my lIlVGIltion may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims. v
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mining machine presenting a chamber housing electrical connections, an explosion proof cover for said chamber, attaching means for said cover, and means for preventing unauthorized removal of said cover including a shroud for said attaching means and a locking rod interlocking with said cover and'shroud.
2. A mining machine presenting a chamber housing electrical devices, an explosion proof cover for said chamber, attaching means for said cover including at least one attaching element, and means for preventing unauthorized removal of said cover including a shroud for said attaching element and After the a locking rod interlocked with said cover and shroud.
8. A mining machine presenting a chamber housing electrical connections, an explosion' prooi I cover therefor, attaching means for said cover, and means for pre Venting unauthorized removal of said cover including a shroud protecting said attaching means, apertured means carried by said cover, said shroud having apertures to receive said apertured means, and a locking rod passing through said apertured means to obstruct removal of said shroud.
4. A mining machine presenting a chainher housing-electrical connections, an explosion proof cover therefor, attaching means for said cover, and means for preventing unauthorized reiroml of said cover including a shroud protec g said v achin-e' means, apertured mez carried by said cover, said shroud i151 mg apertures to receive said apertured means and rod receiving apertures, and a locking rod passi g through said apertured means and through said rod receiving apertures.
5. A mining machine presenting a charm ber housing electrical devices, an explosion proof cover therefor, means for attaching said cover, andmeans for preventing unauthorized removal of the latter including a shroud protecting said attaching means and having openings and apertures therein, a plurality of members carried by said cover and projecting into the openings in said shroud, a locking rod interlocking with said members and passing through the apertures in said shroud, and means for locking said rod in position.
6, A mining machine presenting a casing having a chamber housing electrical devices, an explosion proof coveren-gagin-g said cas ing and tightly secured thereto, and means for preventing unauthorized removal of said cover including a supplemental memberhousing said cover and engaging said Casing, said housing member having openings and apertures therein, a plurality of members carried by said cover and projecting into the openings in said housing member, a looking rod interlocking With said last mentioned members and passing through the apertures in said housing member, and means "for locking said rod in position.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES W. VJYMAN.
