J. A. FOXGROVER BRAKE BEAM SAFETY BRACKET Filed April 6, 1925 Patented Nov. 22, 1927, i it r Q w ms mm ime iosnrn A. roxenovnn, or e -archers, miners;
BRAKE-Brian sal nity naafo'iin'r.
Application filed April 6, 1925. Serial No. 21,225.
My invention relates to railway draft apnotch l8cut in its edge, and the depending pliances, and in particularto the hrakebeam end portions 17 of the straps are each ro assembly oi car trucks. Among the objects vi'ded with a vertical slot 19, the tops of which the invention has in view are: the prowhich register with the bottoms of the no vision of a novel and improved form of notches cut in the edges oi" the flanges, so
safety bracket forbrakebeams; the provision that the slots andnotches are" in alignment 1 of such a bracket which may beappliedio transverselyoi the beam. The slots lQex} any car truck assembly without withdrawal tendappreciably,belowthe edgeof the beam fromservicc; the provision of sucha bracket flanges, and are adapted to receive there 05 m which is mounted withoutthe use of bolts, through a bracket bar 20 which is passed rivets, or welding, and which may readily through the" slots in the strap ends and is be detached and dismounted. supported thereby transversely of and be- With these, and such' other-objects in view neath the beam 14, the length of the bar as will beapparent from the description, my being such that it projects beyond each side 15 invention resides in the novel construction, of the beam, considerably under the brake combination and arrangement of parts herebeams 11, forming an eii'icient support-thereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated for in case-of a drop. in the accompanying drawings, of which By reason of the registry of the top of the Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section slots 19 with the notches 18 in the channel 20 through a car truck, with parts removed, beam flanges, when the bars 20 are inserted illustrating the mounting of the safety in the strap ends, the top of each bar will bracket; seat in the flange notches to lock the bracket Figure 2, a top plan view thereof, with in position against any movement longituparts broken away for clearness of detail; dinally of the channel beam. The bars 20 25 Figure 3, a perspective of the bracket as are secured against any shifting transversely mounted on a truck channel beam; and of the channel beam, by means of cotter pins Figure 4: is a tragmentary perspective'ot a 21 passed therethrough adjacent the outer channel beam forming a part of this invenfaces of each of the depending strap ends 17 tion. In application of the bracket-,it is only so The usual construction of railway car necessary to cut the notches 18 in the beam trucks employs brakes 10 on the ends of a flanges at the desired points, which maybe pair of transverse brake beams 11 supported done by a blowtorch. The straps 16 are then by pendent bars 12 pivotedin the arch bars applied over the channel beam to bring the 13; the brake beams paralleling the flanges slots thereof in alignment with the notches,

A brake beam safety bracket comprising the combination with a channeled truck beam having flanges providedfwith edge opening notches, of a strap disposed over said beam and having slots therein, and a bracket bar passed through said slots for support in said strap, and seated in said notches for anchoring said strapand bar to the beam.
2. A brake beam safety bracket comprising the combination with a channeled truck beam having notches in the edges of the side flanges thereof, of a strap disposed over said beam and having .end portions depending therefrom at each side of said beam, said end portions having slots therein in registry withsaid notches, and a bracket bar passed through said slots and notches beneath said beam.
3. A brake beam safety bracket comprising the combination with a channeled truck beam having its side flanges notched in transverse alignment, of a strap disposed over said beam and formed with depending end portions at opposite sides thereof, said end. portions extending below said beam and having vertical slots therein for registry with said notches, a bracketbar passed beneath said beam in the slots of said strap end portions and extending from opposite sides of said beam, a portion of said bar being seated in said notches to prevent shifting longitudinally of the beam.
4. A brake beam safety bracket comprising the combination with a channeled truck beam having its side flanges depending and tending beyond the sides thereof, and means on said bar for preventing shifting thereof transversely of said beam.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
