H. FISCHER INTAGLIO PRINTING MA C HINE FOR PRINTING 0N SHEETS Filed may 19. .1926
Patented Nov. 22, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS FISCHER, AUGSBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO MASCHINENFABRIK-AIIGS- BURG-NEUERNBEBG, AKTIENGESELLSHAFT, F AUGSBURG, GERMANY.
INTAGLIO PRINTING MACHINE FOR PRINTING 0N SHEETS;
Application filed May 19, 1926, Serial No It is. therefore, usual to dry the printed sheet by heat. Satisfactory printing may also be attained by exposing the freshly printed picture after heating to a strong cooling action so as to cause the ink to congeal or set. In the well known mtagho machines printing on sheets, the ink is dried during the delivery of the sheet. The sheet delivery apparatus and the printing machipe itself. have consequently a very considerable length. The whole machine thus becomes difficult to watch and the attendance of the machine is rendered difficult. It has been proposed to employ drying cylinders to which the impressed sheet is delivered in such a manner that the fresh impression lies inside or face downward. The printed sheet is lifted by a current of air supplied from the interior of the drying cylinder from the periphery of the drying cylinder and is forced by this air current against the inner wall of a sheet metal casing surrounding the drying cylinder, so that it slides on said inner wall. In this well known arrangement, the sheet may be printed on one side only. \Varm air may be supplied to'the sheet in the drying cylinder from one side only, and moreover. the sliding of the sheet on the sheet metal casing is disadvantageous.
The present above drawbacks are according to the invention obviated by the imp'ressed sheet bein transferred by means of a delivery cylinder having a periphery approximately equal to double the length of the sheet, to a heated drying cylinder so that the fresh impression lies, as the sheet rests upon the drying cylinder on the outside, the sheet then being transferred back from the drying cylind r to the second half of the delivery cylinder which latte r delivers the sheet to the delivery apparatus proper. The second half of the periphery of the delivery cylinder is preferably provided with means for cooling the sheet; while the first half of the delivery cylinder may be provided with heating means in a similar manner as the drying cylinder. The delivery cylinder is provided with two sets of gripping devices, whilst the cylinder for turning the sheet possesses only one set of gripping devices.
01 the appended drawing, Figs. 1 and 2 110,098, and in Germany zrune z, 1925.
show byway of example, two embodiments of the invention.
T he sheet which has been printed upon the impression cylinder (1, is transferred by the grippers b ot'wthe impression cylinder to the grippersc of the delivery cylinder so that the printed sheet lies upon the first half (i of the delivery cylinder. The grippers 0 transfer the sheet to the grippers e of the turning cylinder 7, the diameter of which is half the size of the diameter of the delivery cylinder. The turning cylinder. fin the embodiment shown in Fig. 1', is constructed as a drying cylinder and is therefore provided with suitable heating means,
for instance, with electric heating resistances. The sheet is transferred by the grippers e to the second set of grippers g of the delivery cylinder so that it now lies upon the second half h of the periphery of said delivery cylinder. This second half, asindicated in the drawings is provided with cooling means i whereby the ink is subjected to strong cooling action. The sheet is then transferred from the grippers g to the delivery device proper is, which delivers the sheet upon the delivery pile Z.
In the embodiment according to Fig. 2, the first half 11 of the delivery cylinder is provided with heating means. The turning, cylinder f is likewise provided with heating means. Otherwise, the construction is the same as that shown in Fig. 1.
W'hat I claim is:
1. In an intaglio printing machine, the
combination with the impression cylinder, of a delivery cylinder having a periphery equal to or larger than double the len h of the sheets to be printed on, and a rying cylinder adapted to receive the printed sheets fronrsaid delivery cylinder and then transfer back the sheets to another port on' of the periphery of said delivery cylinder.
2. The combination as specified in claim 1, including heating means in one half of said delivery cylinder.
3. The combination as specified in claim 1.
including cooling means in one-half of said and a sheet delivery means, of a delivery cylinder having a periphery equal to or larger than double the length of the sheets larger than double the length of the sheets to be printed on, adrying cylinder adapted to receive the printed sheets from said delivery cylinder and then transfer the sheets back to another portion of the. periphery of said delivery cylinder to be delivered thereby to said sheet delivery means, a heating means inone portion of said delivery cylinder, and a cooling means in another portion thereof. 8. lhe combination as specified in claim 5 including means on said cylinders for engaging the sheets while being transferred rom one cylinder to another. In testimony whereof I have ailixed n signature.
HANS FISCHER.
